Grief counselors at NH middle school after student dies in crash with stolen delivery vehicle
Grief councilors are being made available at a New Hampshire middle school after a boy was killed and a girl was seriously injured after police said they crashed a car they stole from a delivery driver. The youths have not been identified. Manchester School District Superintendent Jennifer Chmiel on Wednesday confirmed one of the students, the boy who died, was a student in the school district. 'We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our students, and our thoughts are with those impacted by this motor vehicle accident,' Chmiel said in a statement. Chmiel said additional resources are being made available at the Southside Middle School in Manchester. 'In addition to our school based counseling teams, we have brought in additional community resources and grief counselors that will be available at the school,' Chmiel said. 'We encourage parents and students to reach out to a member of the Southside team if you have any questions or would like to access these resources,' said Chmiel, who also provided additional resources about grief on the school's website. Early Wednesday morning, around 12:50 a.m., officers responded to a report of a stolen motor vehicle in the area of 5 Clifford Ave., police said. The victim, a food delivery driver, told officers he had briefly left his 2014 Toyota Corolla unattended. When he returned, the vehicle was gone. About an hour later, officers spotted the Corolla in the area of Kenberma Street. The Corolla was traveling without headlights on. When police activated emergency lights and sirens, the driver behind the wheel drove away quickly. Police pursued the Corolla and continued onto the highway, but stopped the chase after losing sight of the vehicle. Around 2 a.m., state police found the car in the area of Route 101 westbound at the Kilton Road off-ramp in Bedford, where it had crashed. The male driver, a juvenile, was pronounced dead at a local hospital. A female passenger, also a juvenile, was taken by ambulance to a local hospital with serious injuries, Bedford police said. Her condition was not known on Wednesday. This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available. Download the FREE Boston 25 News app for breaking news alerts. Lincoln Beer Festival downsizes amid shift in drinking habits
A city's beer festival has moved to a smaller venue blaming falling attendances and a major shift in drinking Lincoln Beer Festival has relocated to Southside, a former church on Colegrave Street, for its 43rd year and will run from Thursday until Mark Richards said the change reflected the shift in drinking behaviours, with people going out earlier and fewer younger people socialising since the pandemic."The younger generations in their 20s aren't really going out late at night so there is a lack of footfall in pubs and venues throughout the country in that," he said. The three-day event, offering beers, real ales and alcohol-free options, was previously held at The Drill on Free School Richards said it was "a great shame to leave" but said the festival had to "adjust" to changes in society."We've had to make the decision [to change venues] because our footfall reduced as a result of that," he said. Michael Thurlby, who owns three pubs in Stamford, had also noticed a change in people's drinking habits. "We've had to adapt the hours and the style of our businesses to offer what people want today and not what they wanted 20 years ago," he pub landlord added people were opting for a healthier living by going out earlier with family and drinking more alcohol-free believed attitudes shifted as a result of the 2007 smoking ban and the coronavirus pandemic. The BBC spoke to members of the public about their drinking habits. Bowen Jones, 19, was sat in a pub with a pint of apple juice. He said: "I've never drank, I just don't like the taste of alcohol."Mr Jones said he went out the night before until 04:00 BST, did not drink alcohol, then drove home. "People don't go to the pub so much like my parents used to do," he Jones' friend, Oliver De'ath, 18, said he only drinks on special occasions."I don't really see the enjoyment in it. Sometimes we go out for food instead, I go to the gym. I think it is more socially acceptable [not to drink]," Mr De'ath said. By starting at noon and offering alcohol-free options, organisers hoped to reflect changing drinking event, sponsored by Lincoln CAMRA, will run until 23:00 BST on Thursday and Friday and until 21:00 BST on Saturday. The Original Southside cocktail is a glorious crash of flavors
The Original Southside cocktail is a glorious crash of flavors Welcome back to FTW's Beverage of the Week series. Here, we mostly chronicle and review beers, but happily expand that scope to any beverage that pairs well with sports. Yes, even cookie dough whiskey. The Original Southside is an old Chicago cocktail. It's also, to be clear, threading a bunch of needles. It's a prohibition-era recipe and it absolutely looks like one. Gin, lemon and mint -- basic flavors that could be friends or enemies. Then you've got the process of getting it into a can, keeping it shelf stable and introducing bubbles to the mix. Unlike the soft landing spot of a low-alcohol seltzer that can be flattened with artificial flavors, it also clocks in at 10 percent alcohol by volume (ABV). So, yeah, lots of moving parts. The degree of difficulty is high. Let's see if it sticks the landing. The Original Southside gin cocktail: A I'm drinking this the way gin drinks are meant to be enjoyed: outside on a warm day. Cracking the can unveils everything the can promises. Lemons, gin and mint, in that order. My brain is poisoned to process clean lemon and sharp booze as cleaning supplies, but that merely suggests I'm getting a drink that is lemony fresh. The first sip is a perfect balance between lemon, mint and bubbles. The gin clocks in as well, but it's minimal -- especially for a cocktail that clocks in at 10 percent ABV. That raft of carbonation carries everything along wonderfully, giving you a slick, nearly creamy texture. That would be for naught if the drink didn't taste good. But this is, to be clear, awesome. Lemon and mint sounds like a toothpaste nightmare. But here the mint adds an extra dimension to the reliable sweet/tart of lemonade. The Original Southside tosses an extra ingredient into the mix and it lands perfectly. This is crushable to the point of danger It's wonderful for hot day drinking but holds up in hoodie weather, too. It's clean and easy and finishes dry enough to keep you coming back. Gin is a delicate spirit that can be a detriment in the wrong combination. Southside turned it into an asset. This rules. Would I drink it instead of a Hamm's? This a pass/fail mechanism where I compare whatever I'm drinking to my baseline cheap beer. That's the standby from the land of sky-blue waters, Hamm's. So the question to answer is: on a typical day, would I drink The Original Southside gin cocktail over a cold can of Hamm's? Look at the can. Look at this smug-[expletive] lemon. Why's he so self satisfied? Because he knows his cocktail is awesome. My only concern is drinking too many, too fast at 10 percent ABV.
