Spacey Jane donates panel fee to support Regional Sounds' Geraldton music hub
Australian indie rock favourites — and a Geraldton claim to fame — Spacey Jane made a powerful gesture of support for the regional arts scene last weekend during Triple J's One Night Stand festival. The band took centrestage in Busselton, headlining the long-awaited return of the festival to WA — its first time in the State since 2016, when Geraldton's Wonthella Oval played host. As featured panel speakers for the event, Spacey Jane threw their support behind the Mid West, choosing to donate their speaker fee to Regional Sounds rather than accept payment for their appearance. Regional Sounds arts development officer Sarah Hinton said it came as a complete surprise but the donation was 'crucial' for the local music industry in Geraldton. 'On Saturday morning I got to meet them and thank them in person and we got to chat about how they got their start,' she said. 'We are working with the City of Greater Geraldton to enter into a five-year lease for the building that we operate from, so that gives our organisation and the local music industry this incredibly strong foundation. 'I think it shows the Australian music industry. No one is pulling the ladder up behind them. They're always so giving back to the communities that initially supported them.' With half of the band — lead vocalist and guitarist Caleb Harper and drummer Kieran Lama — hailing from Geraldton, Spacey Jane understand the importance of nurturing regional talent, with Harper and Lama reminiscing to Ms Hinton about their youth spent busking in the middle of town. 'Caleb and Kieran were talking about how they used to busk Marine Terrace in the lead-up to Christmas and make a fair chunk of cash and so I suppose for them, they want to keep seeing that vibrancy in the CBD and maintaining that access for use,' she said. 'So for us, that supports us with the lease. We can deliver youth programming in partnership with WAM . . . so it all just keeps it in momentum and we're really looking forward to cementing our place.'

Busselton One Night Stand festival drives push for more regional gigs
Music festivals were a rite of passage among Australian millennials, with tales of moshes battled and portaloos survived becoming friendship folklore. But until this weekend, many teenagers in WA's South West had never stepped foot on the hallowed turf. According to one group of mates from Bunbury who attended triple j's One Night Stand in Busselton on Saturday, it was worth the wait. "It's really great. We usually miss out," Ruby Maratea, 15, said. The region's youth have ridden a rollercoaster of event announcements and cancellations, with the area's flagship annual festival Groovin the Moo and new entrant You & Me both pulling out last year. On Saturday night, triple j's all-ages One Night Stand brought the beat back with a line-up that featured Perth-based headliners Spacey Jane and New South Wales act Ruby Fields. Head of triple j, Lachlan Macara, said all 15,000 tickets sold out in less than six hours — the fastest in its 20-year history. "There's a huge appetite for live music in regional areas," he said. But Mr Macara said the main challenge was to keep the momentum after the lights had faded and the stage was packed away. Eight South West teenagers have put their hands up to help maintain that momentum. They were selected by youth music organisation The Push to receive music industry training while helping the triple j team prepare for the event, learning the ropes in audio engineering, social media, video production and radio broadcasting. The Push chief executive Kate Duncan said it was incredible to watch the teenagers develop their skills and confidence. Dunsborough 15-year-old Lachie Cole said he was keen to explore a career in audio engineering after the experience, which gave him the opportunity to help mix a live set. "I've learnt so much [about] how to work these giant events and how they all get put together," he said. "A lot of people don't realise how hard [it is] and how much team work gets put in." Riley Morrant, 17, said he could not believe he was not just attending his first ever festival, but working behind the scenes on it. "I'd already done some volunteering for the local theatre but this is just on another level," he said. The teenagers have already begun planning their own event in the coming months with ongoing support from The Push and the City of Busselton. The event also gave local artists a platform. Busselton band Fool Nelson opened the event after winning triple j's Unearthed competition. Lead guitarist and singer, Tom Broadbent, said it was the biggest gig the band had played. He said the band was keen to pay it forward to help grow the area's music scene. "If we're doing a show down here, it's cool to try and get local bands and support them and get them some gigs," Mr Broadbent said. Bunbury artist Molly McKenna, 20, has already been organising her own live music events for a few years. They have included Ruckus, one of the only recurring all-ages live music events in the area. But she said there were a huge amount of hurdles she encountered putting on the self-funded gigs, including "a lot of surprise costs" and paperwork. "Nobody's really willing to put their neck out … to dedicate time or money into something that's a slow-establishing or slow-growing community event," she said. Ms McKenna featured on one of three free industry panels triple j hosted in the lead up to the festival. She has called for more time, money and trust to be invested in young people to shape a sustainable music scene that they actually wanted to be a part of. The West Australian government contributed $60,000 to The Push's industry training program. But WA Minister for Creative Industries, Simone McGurk, said there was still work to be done to make regional live music events economically viable. "In smaller towns, it's really hard to make the economics work," she said. "We really want to encourage people to go to live music gigs."

Triple J to host More Than A One Night Stand Sessions to help budding musicians
Triple J has announced the return of its much-loved More Than A One Night Stand Sessions which will be hosted in the South West this month. The free music sessions were designed to give emerging and established artists a platform and were first launched at the One Night Stand concert in 2024 in Victoria. The event offers artists an opportunity to learn, meet and hear from people in the Australian music industry. This year's South West event will feature an In Conversation talk with Spacey Jane, a workshop for regional artists and a session with members from West Australian band DICE. The In Conversation event runs from 10.30am to 11.30am on May 24 where the band will reflect on their career with Triple J host Ash McGregor. Spacey Jane — known for the songs Booster Seat, Feeding the Family, Good For You and Thrills — are expected to talk about the barriers regional artists face when trying to break in to the industry, as well as opportunities, connections and pathways. The hour-long Tapped In workshop will run on May 23 from 5pm with Triple J Unearthed winners Fool Nelson leading the activity. Hailing from Perth and Busselton, two brothers and their best mate make up the band known for the songs Bad Dreams, Way I Am and Don't Feel Right. They will be alongside other industry members to discuss being an artist in regional and rural communities, hosted by Triple J's Lucy Smith DICE — known for the songs Stop Sign, Bad Tattoo and This is Not a Love Song — will host the How To Build Off Initial Success session, which is also led by Sam Ford, a Margaret River producer and artist manager. The workshop builds on techniques for growth in the music industry after an initial breakthrough in the entertainment industry. All sessions are held at the Busselton Youth and Community Activities Building. The More Than A One Night Stand event makes its appearance the same weekend as the Triple J One Night Stand concert where Spacey Jane, DICE and Fool Nelson are playing in Busselton alongside LUUDE, Ruby Fields and Blusher. The concert begins at 2pm on May 24 in Bernard Park, Busselton, with tickets open to all ages.
