Sparkle and Algérie Télécom sign MoU for new subsea cable

Under the agreement, Sparkle and Algérie Télécom will build a high-capacity submarine cable between the two nations. Sparkle, the first international service provider in Italy and among the top global operators, and Algérie Télécom, the national telecommunications operator in Algeria, which offers a wide range of fixed-line, Internet, and enterprise solutions, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the development of a new subsea cable linking Italy and Algeria. The agreement was announced during the sixth Italy-Algeria Business Forum held yesterday in Rome, in the presence of the President of the Council of Ministers of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, and of the President of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, Abdelmadjid Tebboune. As part of the MoU, Sparkle will realise with Algérie Télécom a submarine cable linking Italy and Algeria and provide related value-added services on cybersecurity and cloud computing, technical support for data centre development, training across key technical topics as well as a point of presence in Europe fully dedicated to Algérie Télécom, all aimed at supporting Algeria’s digital transformation. The new, dedicated submarine cable will provide a high-capacity route to Europe, delivering enhanced performance, ultra-low latency, and full redundancy compared to existing infrastructures. By doing so, it will also support the growing demand for internet services and digital content, offering an outstanding connectivity experience for both consumers and businesses. Commenting on the MoU, Enrico Bagnasco, CEO of Sparkle, said: 'This agreement marks a significant step in strengthening digital ties between Europe and North Africa. We are proud to contribute to Algeria’s digital future by delivering modern infrastructure as well as innovative and secure solutions for fast and resilient international connectivity.' Adel Bentoumi, CEO of Algérie Télécom, added: 'The strategic partnership with Sparkle confirms the long-standing relationship between our two companies and reflects our shared commitment to innovation and excellence. We believe that this project will play a key role in diversifying our international routes and in meeting the increasing needs of our customers across Algeria.' The Italy-Algeria Business Forum aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries in strategic sectors such as energy, innovation, education, agriculture and culture. It forms part of the Mattei Plan for Africa, through which Italy seeks to build balanced partnerships based on mutual respect and shared benefits.

Dingdong Dantes, Sparkle stars join GMA Kapuso Foundation's relief efforts for those affected by rains

Dingdong Dantes and several Kapuso stars embodied the spirit of bayanihan as they volunteered for GMA Kapuso Foundation's relief efforts for the communities that have been affected by the prevailing rains in parts of the country. According to "24 Oras" Thursday, the Kapuso Primetime King donated germicidal soap for those who were impacted by the floods caused by the heavy rains. "Alam niyo sa mga panahon kagaya ngayon tuwing may sakuna bawat tulong kasi is napakahalag. Napakalayo ng nararating ng bawat kontribusyon ng lahat ng mga kababayan natin through bayanihan," said Dingdong. Sparkle stars Sofia Pablo, Allen Ansay, Aya Domingo, Jess Martinez, Mad Ramos, and Arnold Reyes likewise volunteered for the foundation's relief operations. "Naisip ko na kung ako na-stranded mas marami pang mas grabe 'yung sinapit kesa sa amin, so thankful ako sa opportunity na to," said Arnold. Jess, for her part, shared that it's fulfilling to be able to volunteer because even small acts "can make a huge difference." Per Allen, they really wanted to volunteer because a lot of people have been affected by the calamity. Sofia also said, "Andaming tao ulit na nawalan ng bahay, na-stranded ulit, syempre wala rin silang food so andito kami para tumulong." Previously, Sparkle star and Army reservist Ronnie Liang, comedian Marites "Tessbomb" Maranon, and Cloud 7's Kairo Lazarte and Johann Nepomuceno joined GMA Kapuso Foundation's relief distribution in Rizal, while John Vic De Guzman and Tart Carlos helped with the foundation's relief packing activity. The GMA Kapuso Foundation has been delivering aid non-stop to those who have been affected by the heavy rains through its Operation Bayanihan project, including families in Valenzuela City, Quezon City, Bulacan, Rizal, Pampanga, and Zambales. For those who wish to support GMA Kapuso Foundation's projects, donations may be made via Metrobank, Land Bank, BDO, Bank of Commerce, UnionBank, PNB, Cebuana Lhuillier, GCash, Lazada, and Shopee. Visit the GMA Kapuso Foundation website for more information. Classes at all levels and government work in Metro Manila and 34 provinces were suspended on Thursday due to the expected heavy rains from Typhoon Emong and the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat). As Emong maintained its strength, PAGASA on Thursday hoisted Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 4 over three areas in Luzon: the southwestern portion of Ilocos Sur (Santa Lucia, Santa Cruz, Tagudin) the northwestern portion of La Union (Bangar, Luna, Balaoan, Bacnotan, San Juan, City of San Fernando, Bauang) the extreme northwestern portion of Pangasinan (Agno, Bani, Bolinao, Anda, City of Alaminos). —CDC, GMA Integrated News

Photos: Carby Rose Basina/GMA Integrated News Kapuso executives, stars, clients, and partners gathered for a special pre-gala event held at the Okura Hotel in Manila on Thursday ahead of the much-anticipated GMA Gala 2025. The event served as a warm-up to the main gala night, setting a tone of celebration and gratitude. GMA Network Senior Vice President Atty. Annette Gozon-Valdes delivered the opening remarks, highlighting the network's milestones and the strong partnerships that have propelled GMA Network to continued success. Charlie Fleming serenaded the guests with a surprise song number, infusing the night with artistry and flair. It was followed by a toast led by Sparkle GMA Artist Center First Vice President Joy Marcelo. Other Kapuso executives present were GMA Kapuso Foundation Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Rikki Escudero-Catibog and Sparkle Senior Talent Manager Tracy Garcia, among others. Among the stars present at the gathering on Thursday night were Yasmien Kurdi, Rocco Nacino, Martin Javier, Shuvee Etrata, Anthony Constantino, AZ Martinez, Charlie Fleming, Will Ashley, Josh Ford, Michael Sager, Vince Maristela, Angel Guardian, Jak Roberto, Jeric Gonzales, Anton Vinzon, Sofia Pablo, Allen Ansay, Faye Lorenzo, and Mad Ramos. A key moment of the evening was the GMA Kapuso Foundation donation turnover. GMA Network donated a total of P2 million, underscoring the network's continued commitment to public service and social responsibility through its charitable arm. Gozon-Valdes told GMA Integrated News that the pre-gala dinner pushed through despite the inclement weather because the event is really for the benefit of the GMA Kapuso Foundation. "Tamang-tama, nangangailangan talaga sila ng tulong ngayon. So specifically, all the proceeds, at least P2 million ha ang nalilikom natin, tonight ay mapupunta particularly for the calamity victims," she said. "Even before the storms, even before the flooding, talagang for the benefit of Kapuso Foundation itong gabing ito. So lalo na siguro silang na-engganyong pumunta kasi meron talagang mga nangangailangan ng tulong, so I'm very happy na we've raised at least P2 million as of now. And baka madagdagan pa at the end of the night," she added. Meanwhile, Escudero-Catibog expressed her gratitude, noting that the heavy rains lately have been hard to grasp. "First, it was habagat, we've been conducting relief operations araw-araw. Tapos ngayon naman, no'ng pumasok si Emong at pinalakas pa nitong si Dante, 'di naman makaalis si Dante dahil merong Fujiwhara effect daw 'yung dalawang bagyo. So, talagang ang hinagpit talaga 'yung probinsya ng Pangasinan at tsaka ang Pampanga nasa state of calamity na," she said. Escudero-Catibog added that the GMA Kapuso Foundation is now preparing for its relief operations this weekend. The GMA Gala 2025, which is part of the celebration of GMA Network's 75th anniversary this year, will be held on August 2. Now in its fourth year, the GMA Gala is a star-studded gathering of Kapuso stars and other showbiz personalities where they walk down the red carpet in fashionable outfits and enjoy an evening of camaraderie and celebration. In 2024, proceeds from the event were donated for the benefit of Typhoon Carina victims. —CDC, GMA Integrated News
