Spartan legacy linebacker chooses to commit to Rutgers before taking MSU official visit

Michigan State football recently got into the recruitment of a legacy recruit, looking to make a splash and a play on a linebacker with ties to the university. Adam Shaw, the son of former Spartan All-American Scott Shaw, was the prospect on the Spartans radar. Unfortunately, the Spartans aren't going to get a real crack at the legacy prospect, after Shaw has made his commitment to Rutgers, cancelling his other official visits. Shaw is a native of Hillsdale, New Jersey, and made his decision to stay with the in-state Scarlet Knights over offers from Pitt and MSU. He is an 88-rated 3-star by 247Sports, being recruited as a linebacker, standing at 6'3" and weighing 205 pounds. It is unfortunate that Spartans are not going to get a chance with the legacy recruit, with having an official visit be such a massive part of the recruiting process, but Rutgers got the first crack at the prospect and landed their shot. Lessening the blow, Michigan State landed the commitment of 3-star linebacker Braylon Hodge on Sunday afternoon, gaining a massive addition at the linebacker position. Need a break? Michigan State football lands commitment of 2026 linebacker from Colorado

Michigan State football has added to the 2026 recruiting class, landing a massive priority target in the first weekend of official visit season. Englewood (CO) native Braylon Hodge has made his commitment to Michigan State, cancelling his remaining official visits. The Spartans beat out Iowa, Minnesota and Utah for the 6-foot-3, 210 pound linebacker. He is a highly rated 3-star, ranking as an 88-rated player on 247Sports, and the No. 44 linebacker in America. Advertisement Hodge has been a rapidly rising prospect in the region, and he almost certainly will be someone that is going to see his stock continue to rise as he continue to show off his ability with his size. Getting him to commit is a massive win for the Spartans. He is the first defensive commitment for Michigan State in the 2026 recruiting class, and comes at a massive position of need. Spartans commit, 3-star TE Eddie Whiting reaffirms MSU commitment following official visit

Spartans commit, 3-star TE Eddie Whiting reaffirms MSU commitment following official visit Locked In: #MichiganState TE commit Eddie Whiting posted his official visit pics with the song choice of Drake's 'Do Not Disturb.' Alabama, Michigan, Florida & several others offered, visited & pursued him before he committed to the Spartans in early February. — Justin Thind (@JustinThind) June 1, 2025 One of the Spartans' top commits in the 2026 class reaffirmed his commitment to Michigan State following his official visit this weekend. Spartans commit Eddie Whiting of Sioux Falls, S.D. posted a clear message following his official visit to Michigan State this weekend: "Do Not Disturb." The three-star tight end prospect posted pictures of his official visit to Michigan State this weekend, and with the photos included the song "Do Not Disturb" from Drake. The post from Whiting can be seen below -- courtesy of 247Sports' Justin Thind: Whiting is a high-end three-star tight end in the 2026 class. He was once listed as a four-star prospect but his recruiting rating has recently slipped slightly to 88. Whiting ranks as the No. 28 tight end in 247Sports' composite rankings for the 2026 class. He is also listed as the No. 2 player from South Dakota and No. 565 overall prospect in the class. Michigan State landed Whiting's commitment in February over a number of other big-time programs. He holds offers from nearly 20 schools, with some of those coming from power programs such as Alabama, Auburn, Michigan, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State, Nebraska, UCLA, Washington and Wisconsin. Retaining Whiting's commitment is a big deal for the Spartans as he is currently one of their highest-rated commits in the 2026 class. There is still plenty of time left in the recruiting cycle for things to change, of course, but this is a great sign for head coach Jonathan Smith and his staff. Spartans reportedly nearing hire of next AD, Georgia Tech's J Batt listed as a finalist

Spartans reportedly nearing hire of next AD, Georgia Tech's J Batt listed as a finalist It appears Michigan State has zeroed in on a few finalists for the open athletic director role, with one report on Sunday suggesting there's a front-runner for the job. Tony Paul of The Detroit News posted on social media early on Sunday morning that Georgia Tech director of athletics J Batt has "emerged" in the Spartans' search for the same position. Batt has been at Georgia Tech for two years, where he has had a lot of success in fundraising and is known as a "big basketball guy" according to Paul. Somewhat conflicting with Paul's report, a few hours later Justin Thind of 247Sports reported that Michigan State is at the "shortlist of finalists" stage, with "no singular candidate being the focus above the rest at this point." Thind's report came roughly six hours after Paul posted on social media platform X, so one can believe this note from Thind was from following up on Paul's initial report. Thind did add in an additional post on X that Batt is "one of the finalists" so there appears to be some clear interest in Batt from Michigan State. Michigan State parted ways with Haller earlier this month after a nearly four-year run. Haller's final day at Michigan State was May 11. It'll be interesting to see if a decision is coming soon for the Spartans. Both Paul and Thind's reporting would suggest Michigan State is close to making a hire and at this point in the process they are now just finalizing who that person will be.
