Jonathan Smith provides injury update of Spartans on opening day of preseason fall camp

Head coach Jonathan Smith provides an injury update on the Spartans on the first day of fall camp In the words of Michigan State head coach Jonathan Smith, the Spartans are starting fall preseason camp in a "solid" spot on the injury front. Michigan State opened up fall preseason camp on Tuesday, with the Spartans holding their first practice of the 2025 season. As part of fall camp opening, media was able to attend a brief portion of practice and have availability to ask questions to a number of players and Smith. One of the typically asked questions during this time of year is the injury status of the team, which Smith was able to provide a positive response. "I'd say solid," Smith said when asked about the overall team health of the Spartans. "Knock on wood, but we haven't came across the season-ending injury (or anything) to that extent. We definitely are being, I'll call it, smart with some guys in camp and we will ease them into it. But currently, we are feeling pretty solid." Now, preseason camp has just started so, of course, we are only dipping our toes into the injury front at this time. But, this is certainly reassuring knowing there aren't any offseason injuries that Smith and the Spartans were ready to announce on opening day of fall camp. This is a notable development as we get going on the 2025 season. Throughout fall camp, injuries will be something to monitor so stick with Spartans Wire for the latest updates. Hopefully, we don't have any news of any significant injuries before Michigan State takes the field on August 29 in the season opener against Western Michigan. Spartans reportedly in communication with high-end 4-star SF prospect

A major small forward prospect in the 2026 class has reportedly been in talks with Michigan State basketball recently. Michigan State was one of a few schools Southside Hoops recently mentioned as being in contact with four-star small forward Anthony Felesi. According to Southside Hoops, Felesi has been "hearing" from Michigan State, Kentucky, Duke, Purdue, Michigan and Missouri recently. Felesi is a high-end four-star prospect, with a recruiting rating of 98.27 in 247Sports' composite system. He ranks as the No. 20 small forward and No. 47 overall prospect in 247Sports' composite rankings. He is also listed as the No. 2 player from Utah. Michigan State has not yet formally extended an offer to Felesi, per 247Sports. He does, however, hold offers from more than 10 schools, including Louisville, UCLA, BYU, LSU, Cal, Oregon, UNLV, Utah, Villanova, Utah State and USF. Michigan State currently holds one commitment in its 2026 class in point guard Carlos Medlock Jr. So we should keep an eye on the Spartans potentially further pursuing Felesi as a small forward prospect. Spartans to report for preseason fall camp next week

Michigan State football will reportedly kick off fall camp next week. On3's Pete Nakos has put together a comprehensive list of when each power four team across the country will report for fall preseason camp, and for Michigan State that is next week. Per Nakos, the Spartans are scheduled to report to East Lansing, Mich. on July 28 with "camp starting shortly after." With the Spartans slated to return for preseason camp early next week, we as media and fans should get our first look at the 2025 Michigan State squad sometime shortly after they report. Typically, media will be given availability to attend at least a portion of practice and talk to players and coaches the first week the team reports for fall camp. Michigan State is coming off a third straight losing season, with the Spartans finishing 5-7 in Jonathan Smith's first year as the head coach. The Spartans enter this fall with similar national expectations as last season, with many picking them to finish in the bottom half of the Big Ten and landing right around the bowl eligibility cutoff again. Michigan State officially opens the 2025 season on August 29 against Western Michigan. Kickoff from Spartan Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET with the game slated to be televised on FS1. Spartans listed in bottom half of Big Ten football preseason media poll

The media has spoken, and they believe Michigan State will finish near the bottom of the Big Ten again this fall. The annual (formerly Cleveland Plain Dealer) preseason Big Ten media poll was released on Monday, with the Spartans landing in the back half of the league. Michigan State was pegged as the No. 13 team in the league, tied with Rutgers. This year's poll included 24 voters, with beat reporters from each team covered. Michigan State received 135 points and averaged out a ranking of 13.60 in the poll. UCLA was right behind the Spartans with only one point separating them from Michigan State and Rutgers. For perspective, our internal Spartans Wire preseason poll had Michigan State coming in at No. 8 in the league. So as we predicted, the Spartans Wire crew has higher expectations for the Spartans this fall than others covering the league. Spartans Wire Big Ten Football Preseason Media Poll, Awards

Big Ten Football Media Days are nearly upon us so that means its time to unveil some rankings and preseason predictions. Annually, will compile an official media poll and preseason awards that is released just ahead of the Big Ten Football Media Days. Us three at Spartans Wire are unfortunately not included in that media poll, but, who says we can't let our voices be heard? So with that being said, we are releasing our own preseason poll and awards this year. See where we have the Spartans landing and who we envision having the most impactful seasons on the field below: Our Media Poll Here is our preseason rankings for all 18 teams in the Big Ten: Ranking / Team Points 1. Ohio State 54 (3) 2. Oregon 48 3. Penn State 47 4. Nebraska 44 5. USC 40 6. Illinois 39 7. Michigan 35 8. Michigan State 32 9. Iowa 30 10. Indiana 27 11. Washington 25 12. Wisconsin 23 13. Minnesota 19 14. UCLA 16 15. Rutgers 14 16. Northwestern 10 17. Maryland 6 18. Purdue 4 ***Voting system is based on highest ranked team receiving 18 points, second-highest ranked team receiving 17 points and following that sequence to the last-place team receiving one point Thoughts on Michigan State To no surprise, the group of writers who closely follow Michigan State is higher on the Spartans than the national and regional media. Michigan State came in at No. 8 in our rankings, with none of us having the Spartans lower than No. 9 in our Big Ten rankings. It'll be interesting to see next week where the Spartans land in the official Big Ten media poll but I can almost assure you it won't be in the upper half of the league like us. With that being said, the Spartans' struggles over the past few seasons will heavily play a role in that official media poll, where as our poll is forecasting Michigan State to take a notable positive step this upcoming fall.
