Man on trial for fleeing police arrested on weapons charges in Rockford

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Police arrested Christian Rodriguez, 23, on weapons charges over the weekend. Rodriguez is currently on trial for two incidents of fleeing police at high speeds. According to the Rockford Police Department, around 12:05 a.m. on Saturday, May 3rd, officers with the department's Specialized Community Oriented Policing Enforcement (SCOPE) team spotted a 'suspicious vehicle' with three occupants near South Main Food & Liquor, at 1321 S. Main Street. When officers conducted a traffic stop, police said two of the occupants were missing. Both were then seen in the parking lot of the liquor store, with Rodriguez walking out from a wooded area nearby. Police searched the woods with the assistance of a K-9 and found a loaded handgun. Rodriguez was arrested and charged with Aggravated Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon, and No Valid Firearm Owner's Identification. ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford Police, while breaking up a party at an Airbnb rental, arrested 'repeat felony offender' Jerry Rockette, 25, who reportedly ran from officers while armed. According to the Rockford Police Department, officers were called to the 4500 block of Dogwood Circle around 10:40 p.m. on Saturday, April 19th. As the party was being cleared, officers with the department's Specialized Community Oriented Policing Enforcement (SCOPE) team attempted to speak with Rockette when he fled the scene. He was apprehended and a loaded gun was found on his person, according to authorities. Rockette has been charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Repeat Felony Offender, Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon, No Valid FOID, and Resisting Arrest. ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford Police used its new GPS tracking launchers to apprehend a suspect who fled from officers on two occasions. Around 10:05 p.m., police said officers with the Specialized Community Oriented Policing Enforcement (SCOPE) team spotted a vehicle that had previously fled from them. When they attempted to pull the driver over, he again sped away. This time, officers were able to use the department's newest technology, the , which uses vehicle-mounted GPS launchers to attach a tracking device to the offender's car during a pursuit. Police said 'stop sticks,' devices thrown in the path of an escaping vehicle to deflate its tires, were also used. The car was tracked to the 2700 block of Kinsey Street. Officers used a K9 to find the suspect, 28-year-old Nelson Brown, in the 2700 block of Hanson Street. (WTVO) — 18-year-old Trenton Reed and an unnamed 16-year-old male were arrested Wednesday night in a traffic stop that resulted in the seizure of two weapons modified with fully-automatic 'switch' devices, and drugs. According to the Rockford Police Department, officers with the Specialized Community Oriented Policing Enforcement (SCOPE) team stopped a vehicle at N. Main and Jonathan around 10:40 p.m. Police said the 16-year-old offender ran from officers but was chased down and taken into custody. Authorities said 30 grams of cannabis and a loaded handgun with an automatic switch, light, and extended ammunition magazine was found on his person. Reed was said to be in possession of 50 grams of cannabis, and a loaded handgun with an automatic switch device, along with an extended ammunition magazine. Reed was charged with unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, obstructing, no valid Firearm Owners Identification (FOID), and possession of cannabis.
