Is India Post Ending Registered Post From 1 September 2025? Check Truth Behind It

New Delhi: Several social media accounts are claiming that India Post has announced the discontinuation of Registered Post from 1st September 2025. PIB Fact Check has rebutted the claims saying that it is fake news. In a tweet, PIB said, "This claim is misleading! Registered Post is not getting discontinued. It is merging with Speed Post. Here's what stays the same. Person-specific delivery. Delivery receipt and real-time tracking. Legal validity & acknowledgments". _ Is India Post Really Ending Registered Post? It is_ — PIB Fact Check (@PIBFactCheck) August 8, 2025 The Ministry of Communications had earlier this week issued clarification on Rationalization of Domestic Mails products. India Post is merging Registered Post with Speed Post. Following the integration, Speed Post Letter and Speed Post Parcel will provide address specific delivery, while items booked as Speed Post with registration will be delivered specifically to the addressee. Customers will continue to enjoy the benefits of registration under Speed Post while also gaining access to premium Speed Post features. "In order to streamline mail operations, improve delivery timelines, and optimize logistics resources, the Department of Posts has rationalized its sorting infrastructure and unified the processing of both Registered and Speed Post items. This integration will enhance backend efficiency, reduce transit delays, and offer better connectivity across the network," an official release said. Both Registered Post and Speed Post are accountable services, with records maintained at each stage of transmission. The key difference lies in their delivery protocols. While Registered Post is addressee-specific (delivered only to the addressee or their authorized representative), Speed Post is address-specific (delivered to any person available at the address).

Did India Post Discontinue Registered Post? Check What Dept Says On Confusion

The announcement of the discontinuation of Registered Post service by India Post has sparked a flurry of concerns among India citizens. Being a decade-old service with a history associated with India's growth and development since its Independence, the Registered Post has been in the minds of Indians before the inception of Speed Post. But did India Post really discontinue the Registered Post service? No. In a clarification, India Post confirmed that Registered Post service has been merged with Speed Post. Registered Post is a postal service that focuses on proof of delivery, while Speed Post, on the other hand, focuses on fast and time-bound delivery, where speed matters more than strict identity verification.

India Post To End THIS Service After 50 Years—Speed Post Takes Over From September 1

New Delhi: The Indian Postal Department is set to retire its iconic Registered Post service from September 1, 2025, bringing an end to a trusted system that served the nation for over 50 years. Known for its reliability and affordability, Registered Post was a go-to option for sending important documents like job letters, legal notices, and government communication. The move comes as part of a plan to merge it with the faster Speed Post service, in an effort to modernise and streamline postal operations. The move follows a noticeable decline in the use of Registered Post, with numbers falling by 25 per cent from 244.4 million in 2011-12 to 184.6 million in 2019-20. The drop has been largely driven by the rise of digital communication and increasing competition from private courier services and e-commerce delivery networks. Registered Post used to cost Rs 25.96, with an extra Rs 5 for every additional 20 grams. In comparison, Speed Post starts at Rs 41 for parcels up to 50 grams making it around 20–25 per cent more expensive. This price hike could affect small traders, farmers, and people in remote areas who rely on low-cost postal services for important deliveries. Registered Post to Be Replaced by Speed Post The Postal Department has asked all users including courts, government offices, and educational institutions to switch to Speed Post by September 1. The goal is to streamline services and improve tracking, delivery speed, and overall efficiency. Speed Post, which has been in use since 1986, will now handle tasks earlier managed by Registered Post. However, many are worried about the increased cost, as Speed Post is more expensive than Registered Post. While Registered Post started at Rs 25.96 with Rs 5 added for every extra 20 grams, Speed Post begins at Rs 41 for parcels up to 50 grams making it around 20–25 per cent costlier. This price jump could be a burden for people in rural areas, especially small traders, farmers, and everyday citizens who depend on affordable postal services for important communication. While Speed Post will still offer important features like tracking and delivery confirmation, the decision to end Registered Post has left many feeling nostalgic, especially older users and people in rural areas. For decades, Registered Post was seen as a trusted and reliable service, valued for its legal validity, low cost, and dependable delivery.=

Postal services hit in Chennai as APT 2.0 glitches cause booking delays

As the Department of Posts rolled out APT (Advanced Postal Technology) 2.0 across its branches in the city earlier this week, several post offices faced glitches due to a server breakdown, leading to delays in booking of articles. Over the past two days, several residents who attempted to book Speed and Registered Posts, and money orders failed to complete the booking, even after a long wait at the counters. While at some post offices in Ambattur, Avadi, and Pattabiram, bookings took longer than usual due to sluggish network, counters were closed at several others, including in Kilpauk, Anna Nagar, and Ayanavaram, much to the inconvenience of the postal customers. According to the department, the APT has been designed as a single-window system to offer an enhanced user experience, and faster service delivery. However, the services have hit a roadblock due to network issues. In the past one year, the Tamil Nadu postal circle has handled nearly 11.84 crore Speed and Registered Posts in the State. 'I visited two post offices in my area to book speed post on Wednesday. But the counter operations were suspended. The General Post Office, too, was crowded. I finally had to send a package to Madhya Pradesh via Speed Post by private courier for double the charges,' a Kilpauk resident said. Admitting that the post offices in many areas faced issues, officials said the APT 2.0 digital platform was expanded to all post offices in Tamil Nadu after seamless operation during pilot rollout in post offices like in Vellore. The General Post Office on Rajaji Salai — which handles a high volume of Speed and Registered Post consignments — has had difficulties in booking 20,000-25,000 articles over the past two days. The post office has also put up notices announcing the network issue due to new software migration. Officials said the technical issues had been escalated to the Centre for Excellence in Postal Technology, and the operations were expected to normalise in two days. However, post office banking operations were carried out as it was offered through Finacle digital banking platform.

India Post's rakhi delivery slows down amid tech upgrade, steep couriers step in

Pune: India Post's server-related issues just days before the festival of Raksha Bandhan on Aug 9 have left people across India expressing frustration over undelivered rakhis and delayed bookings at post offices nationwide. Citizens are being forced to spend several times over with private courier services to ensure their parcels reach on time. The problem has persisted since the last few days. Pune resident Sanjay Shirodkar told TOI he was compelled to use a private courier after trying unsuccessfully for several days to book through India Post. "I visited the post office for three days and ultimately sent the rakhi package via courier on Wednesday. The two parcels cost Rs190 each, instead of Speed Post's Rs41 each," he said. India Post booking was either closed or very slow because of server issues and post offices were unbelievably crowded. Pune GPO phone number was not even working, he added. A user reported two urgent parcels being marked as delivered on July 29 and 30, though it was not received, causing "major losses." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Woman sells ring given by ex, then jeweler tells her 'This can't be true' Daily Sport X Undo Another person complained about a Speed Post item showing no update or movement since Aug 2, describing the situation as "jeopardising businesses." Jharkhand's Sachin Parashar said he booked a Speed Post on July 28 with an expected delivery time of around five days. However, the package remained undelivered even after nine days. "I filed an online complaint on Aug 2 and was told to expect a response in three days — but nothing happened. The booking post office's response was appalling. They failed to provide any update, saying systems are getting upgraded," he told TOI. An X post on Wednesday said: "Poor service at Jaipur's Vaishalinagar post office. I waited for 2.5 hours to send a rakhi, but returned without doing so because the counter got closed." Pune resident Savita Thorat (39) said on Wednesday, "I've been standing in queue at the GPO for over two hours. Officials have said it may take at least another one and half hours more since the server is down. I need to send a rakhi urgently. The delay is stressful." Mukesh Bhoite (52) of Pune said, "I was at the GPO on Tuesday and waited in the queue till 7pm. I've already been waiting for over an hour today. If there's a technical issue, it should be communicated clearly to people. I've been trying to send a rakhi and a gift since Monday." Meanwhile, an official memorandum of Aug 6 from the department of posts announced extended working hours for multi-purpose counter machines till 5pm from Aug 6 to 8 to facilitate smooth postal transactions because of "the anticipated heavy public rush during the rakhi festival period." The Press Information Bureau issued a statement on Wednesday: "India Post has undertaken a nationwide rollout of the advanced postal technology application as part of its digital transformation under IT 2.0 — marking a major step toward delivering faster, smarter and customer-centric services. The first day of rollout on Aug 4 was slow given the scale and complexity of the migration which is spanning over 1.6 lakh post offices. The technical team worked round-the-clock and rectified the slowness by Aug 5," it said. Despite India Post's claims of resolution, customers continued reporting issues on Wednesday and raised questions about the timing of such a major system upgrade during an important festival and the fact that they have had to turn to private courier services. Chetan More, franchise owner, DTDC (Chandannagar), told TOI, "We've seen a 40% increase in clients over the last four to five days. The rush is higher than what we have seen during Raksha Bandhan in the last few years. Most bookings are to send rakhis and gifts." Manoj Yadav, franchise owner of a Delhivery retail courier store, said, "We've had several people come to us in the last few days saying they couldn't send rakhis because of India Post server issues. Client footfall at our store has gone up drastically over the last three to four days compared to a week ago." A senior India Post official told TOI, "The IT 2.0 project has been underway for over a year. There was no specific reason to time it around the festival season — nearly 50% of the upgrade was completed a few days ago. The rollout has been gradual and we've been scaling up operations in phases. Unfortunately, over the last few days, the system slowed down while being implemented across 1.6 lakh post offices nationwide." Despite this, India Post has been booking around 20 lakh articles daily. "On Tuesday, we handled nearly 20 lakh articles and bookings had crossed 15 lakh by Wednesday afternoon. There were intermittent glitches, which are expected in a digital migration of this scale." The official further said, "Delivery may have been delayed because of system-related issues. Postmen rely on a mobile application. In case of technical issues, the instruction is to go ahead with manual delivery and maintain a physical record. However, implementation may vary between post offices."
