Police investigating after man with gunshot wound shows up at hospital

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Spencer Colby An investigation is underway after a man with a gunshot wound to the leg showed up to a Toronto hospital early Saturday morning, police say. It's unclear where or when the shooting happened but in a post to social media, officials say they were alerted sometime around 4 a.m. The victims current condition remains unknown but police note the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to come forward.

‘Period of summer weather' expected to arrive in Ottawa next week

Environment Canada's forecast calls for a high of 22 C today, before dropping to 17 C on Saturday and Sunday. The normal temperatures for this time of year are a high of 22 C and a low of 11 C. It will be mainly cloudy tonight with a 40 per cent chance of showers. There is a risk of a thunderstorm late this afternoon. High 22 C, with the humidex making it feel like 25. Saturday will start mainly cloudy, before becoming a mix of sun and cloud in the afternoon. High 17 C. The outlook for Sunday calls for a mix of sun and cloud with a 40 per cent chance of showers. High 17 C. Environment Canada says above-seasonal temperatures will arrive next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with daytime highs of 26 C on Tuesday and Wednesday. 'A period of warm weather is expected to arrive,' Environment Canada said in a statement on its website. 'Temperatures will rise to a few degrees above average.' Wildfire smoke Smoke from wildfires in northern Ontario and Manitoba is expected to drift through Ottawa today. According to wildfire smoke will arrive late this afternoon and linger through the overnight. Ottawa's air quality is expected to be a '4-Moderate Risk' tonight before dropping to '3-Low Risk' on Saturday.

Canada Post, union set to return to bargaining table as OT ban continues

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Spencer Colby Canada Post and the union representing 55,000 of its workers are set to head back to the bargaining table this week as an overtime ban remains in effect. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers says the Crown corporation has proposed continuing talks on Wednesday. It says Canada Post plans to respond to proposals the union presented on Sunday. The union had been in a strike position starting Friday but opted instead for an overtime ban. Some key issues in the labour dispute include wages and other forms of compensation, along with the potential of more part-time staff and weekend delivery. Canada Post employees not working overtime as negotiations continue

On Sunday, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers met with federal mediators to respond to the latest offer from Canada Post, a Crown corporation. 'The Union's replies to Canada Post's proposals offer comprehensive, pragmatic and workable solutions to important issues still on the table, including, for example: wages, the short-term disability plan (STDP), weekend parcel delivery, and staffing,' a union spokesperson told on Monday morning. 'We expect Canada Post to respond early in the week. Our nationwide overtime ban remains in effect.' This is a developing story and will be updated

In a social media tribute, the team's general manager says 33-year-old Eckert had an indescribable connection with the players and was a best friend to other coaches. 'His infectious smile and caring heart are things that will never be forgotten. We love you so much Ecky,' read the statement, attributed to club general manager Ethan Woods. When reached by email, an executive for the lacrosse team says they were discussing the best way to honour Eckert that would also be respectful to his family and the other four families affected by the collision. Eckert and four teenage students from Walkerton District Community School died on Friday when their SUV collided with a transport truck and another SUV just outside London, Ont. Two of the girls were 16 and two were 17, Ontario Provincial Police said. The community, located about 150 kilometres northwest of Toronto, was expected to hold a candlelight vigil at the school on Sunday night. Social media posts circulated showing people who had placed running shoes and candles on their porches in tribute to the crash victims. Several teachers posted pictures of the school's logo, a blue hawk in a geometric design, framed by a heart. The school board and police have not released the names of the students or staff member killed in the crash. Eckert is listed in the school's staff directory as a teacher. He was also identified as a member of the teachers' union in a social media post by the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation.
