Guntur Corporation takes eco leap with cloth bag vending machines, plastic-for-entry scheme
GUNTUR: In a bid to curb single-use plastics and promote eco-friendly habits, the Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) has launched two innovative initiatives—a cloth bag vending machine network and a plastic exchange programme. GMC Commissioner Puli Srinivasulu said the measures are part of a broader strategy to reduce plastic waste and promote sustainable living. 'We are systematically working to phase out single-use plastics, which are harmful to public health and the environment,' he noted. As a first step, cloth bag vending machines have been installed at Gandhi Park and NTR Stadium. These machines dispense durable cloth bags for Rs 20, payable using Rs 10 notes, Rs 5 coins, or a combination of both. The GMC is exploring partnerships to feature advertisements on the bags, which could further reduce their cost to Rs 10. Plans are also in place to expand the vending network to more public areas. In a unique incentive-based move, the Corporation has introduced a plastic exchange program that allows residents to gain free entry to Gandhi Park by submitting 1 kilogram of household plastic waste. Dedicated counters for collecting plastic and electronic waste have been established within the park. 'This is more than just waste disposal—it's about cultivating a change in mindset,' Srinivasulu stressed, urging citizens to actively participate in creating a plastic-free Guntur. Residents have welcomed the initiative. 'Small steps like these make a big difference,' said Anjali Reddy, a local resident. 'Affordable cloth bags and simple recycling incentives encourage people to be responsible.' Through this blend of accessibility, incentives, and civic engagement, the Corporation aims to turn its 'Clean Guntur' mission from a slogan into a daily community practice.

Awareness prog on clubfoot conducted
Kurnool: As part of the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK), an awareness programme on congenital deformities like clubfoot (congenital talipes equinovarus) was conducted at the District Early Intervention Centre of the Government General Hospital, Kurnool, on Monday morning. Addressing the occasion, Dr Sreeramulu, Deputy Superintendent of the hospital, emphasized the need for parental awareness regarding children's physical development. He pointed out that early identification and timely intervention are crucial in managing conditions like clubfoot. He explained the medical and surgical options available for children born with such deformities. Dr Srinivasulu, Head of the Orthopedic Department, noted that parents often worry about various developmental issues in children but tend to ignore some as minor or temporary. Due to a lack of awareness, many parents fail to recognize serious conditions like clubfoot early. As a result, delays in treatment can deprive children of a joyful and active childhood. He highlighted that this condition, if diagnosed early, can often be corrected through surgery or even without surgical intervention. He advised parents to consult doctors without delay if they notice their child struggling to walk, falling frequently, or having difficulty running. Dr Anand Prakash, a pediatric specialist, stated that clubfoot is a congenital condition with no single known cause. However, genetic factors, intrauterine pressure, maternal habits like alcohol or tobacco use during pregnancy, and other health complications can increase the risk of a child being born with clubfoot. Dr Shailesh, In-Charge Program Officer for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD), informed that CURE International India Trust provides free treatment for children with clubfoot in the district. He also added that the trust offers free orthopedic shoes to children undergoing treatment. For assistance, he advised parents to contact Kurnool Help Line CURE India Counselor Reshma at 8800015588 or the Andhra Pradesh State Helpline at 8800020503. This initiative aims to raise awareness and ensure timely medical support for children suffering from congenital deformities, contributing to a healthier childhood and better quality of life.

Foetal sex determination racket busted in Chittoor
Chittoor: District Collector Sumit Kumar has issued a strong warning against conducting foetal sex determination tests, stating that such practices are illegal under Indian law and that strict legal action will be taken against those involved. On Wednesday, officials conducted a decoy operation in the Bharat Nagar Colony of the 9th Ward in Chittoor city. During the operation, individuals who had arrived at a private residence to undergo sex determination tests were identified and caught. The operation was personally overseen by the District Collector, who confirmed the illicit activities taking place. Authorities seized medical equipment used for the illegal tests and ordered the premises to be sealed. A formal case has been registered, and notices have been served to the District Medical & Health Officer (DM-&HO) and the Deputy Commissioner of Health Services (DCHS) in connection with the incident. According to officials, 11 women were present at the location, reportedly prepared to undergo foetal sex determination procedures at the time of the operation. 'Despite knowing that foetal sex determination is a punishable offense, some individuals continue to engage in such unlawful activities. We are committed to taking stringent action against all those involved,' said Collector Sumit Kumar. Chittoor RDO Srinivasulu, Tahsildar Chandrasekhar, and other officials participated in the operation. The incident has raised concerns over the persistence of illegal sex determination practices, which are believed to contribute to gender imbalance and female foeticide. Authorities reiterated their commitment to enforcing the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act to curb such violations.
