Pupil sentenced for throwing teacher 'like ragdoll' in Dundee school

A Dundee school pupil who knocked his teacher unconscious and covered in blood has been given a community-based sentence. Keiran Matthew, 18, narrowly avoided inflicting life-threatening injuries on the woman during an explosive outburst at St Paul's Academy. After throwing her on a concrete floor 'like a ragdoll', Matthew put his feet up on a teacher's desk and said: 'The stupid cow deserved it.' She has now been left with an 'obvious and permanent' scar and is terrified to return to work. Sheriff Tim Niven-Smith: 'It's difficult for me doing this job everyday to imagine a more serious assault than this particular assault having regard to the consequences of your attack.' Dundee Sheriff Court heard how Matthew, who has diagnosed attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and a learning difficulty, had refused to get changed separately from other pupils before PE. He was described as 'heightened' and 'agitated' before attacking the teacher, who it was claimed was a 'safe' person for the then-S5 pupil. Matthew – who was educated outside the mainstream system – returned to the dock following the preparation of social work reports with solicitor Theo Finlay previously tendering an extensive, clinical psychological report. The lawyer said: 'He appears to be experiencing signs of complex trauma in relation to early childhood experiences. 'The explanation of not being allowed to enter the changing rooms had feelings of unfairness. 'He described becoming agitated that the teacher moved others away which made him feel more agitated and singled out.' Mr Finlay said it was to the 'everlasting dismay' of Matthew's foster mum that she was not contacted to pick him up after he became agitated, which she had done three days earlier. Reference was made to signs of post-traumatic stress disorder in Matthew as well as cognitive impairment, autism, suffering from nightmares and years of involvement with the childhood mental health team. 'He could not cope with custody and there would be a real likelihood of a significant breakdown of his mental health,' Mr Finlay added. Prosecutor Laura Bruce previously described how the teacher was attacked. 'She recalls him gripping her in a rugby-style grip with her arms pinned to her sides and the next thing she felt was the horrific impact of her head striking the floor. 'The accused sat at a teacher's desk, with his feet on the desk and using his mobile phone. 'He told a teacher 'Sir, it wasn't an outburst of anger – she deserved it'.' He later banged on the desk and said: 'The stupid cow deserved it.' A plastic surgeon later determined the assault could have been life-threatening. After being cautioned and charged, Matthew, of Dundee, replied: 'I am sorry,' and later told a social worker he wished he could turn back time. Matthew pled guilty to seizing the teacher's neck and body, throwing her to the floor, causing her to strike her head and be rendered unconscious. He admitted the assault was to her severe injury, permanent disfigurement and the danger of her life. Sheriff Niven-Smith held up the photograph showing the teacher's injury while addressing Matthew. The sheriff said: 'It's not over-egging the pudding to say your attack on her has affected her life in every aspect. 'The photos that I have been provided of your teacher, she has an extensive, significant scar on her head. 'You caused that by your actions. You have permanently marked her head for the rest of her life.' The court heard the woman's confidence has been 'extremely' affected and experiences night terrors. 'She was your safe person and a safe place for you to seek sanctuary if you felt overwhelmed,' the sheriff added. 'She has dedicated her life to support people such as you who are vulnerable school children.' As an alternative to custody, Matthew was placed on supervision for three years with a mentoring programme requirement along with an associated anger management requirement. He is also subject to a restriction of liberty order (9pm until 7am) for 12 months. The sheriff said he took account of Matthew's age, lack of previous convictions and reduced culpability in reaching the community-based disposal.

A major Cardiff building is set to remain closed for three years

A major Cardiff building is set to remain closed for three years The city centre building has been shut since October 2023 and there is an update on its future St David's Hall in Cardiff was a popular venue for classical and popular music and also hosted ballets and singers (Image: Western Mail ) It's been closed for more than 18 months and now Cardiff Council has issued an update on St David's Hall. The popular city centre classical music venue was shut in September 2023 after the council found that the building contained a type of lightweight concrete prone to sudden failures as it ages called reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC). Academy Music Group (AMG), which operates music venues across the country, has signed an agreement for a lease to run St David's Hall and details are being finalised for that now. The re-opening of the venue has stalled and been put back a number of times over the years. ‌ At the last update earlier this year it had been expected to re-open in autumn or winter 2026. For the latest Cardiff news, sign up to our newsletter here. ‌ Now, the council has said that the hoped for re-opening date has been put back to 2027. But the good news is that planning permission was granted recently to carry out the necessary work so it is looking positive. A council spokesperson said: 'Planning permission has recently been granted for the necessary renovation work to St David's Hall. "This is an important step towards the council's goal of seeing the building re-opened to the public. Details of the lease agreement with AMG are now in the process of being finalised, so that work can begin as soon as possible. Article continues below "Once work has begun it is expected to take in the region of 18 months to complete. Subject to any unforeseen issues, St David's Hall could re-open in early 2027." St David's Hall is the usual venue for the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World which was postponed to 2027 after it closed. It is hoped the venue will be ready to open and host the event for that. Meanwhile there is also an update on the other iconic Cardiff building also shut by Raac - City Hall. ‌ City Hall is 120 years old (Image: Ted Peskett ) The 120-year-old building will cost up to £69m to restore to modern standards, it has been revealed. The building has been also been closed since October 2023. Council officials have been drawing up a plan to fund and carry out the refurbishment the 1906 building needs. The historic hall was used to host events as well as for office space, council functions and as meetings rooms for councillors. ‌ Options from a "do minimum" refurbishment bill of £29m to the full cost £69m including a full maintenance backlog and creating modern office space has been looked at. The impressive Edwardian building, opened by Lord Bute, has marble floors and statues of famous Welsh historic figures. The doors were closed in October 2023 after the problems with the heating, electrics and asbestos worsened. Councillors were told in a report in May 2024 that the original hope had been to re-open the building by that same month, but the work was too large. Issues with the heating system and work to remove asbestos would not be complete until the end of 2025 and the building would not re-open until early 2026, councillors were told. ‌ Now, a fresh update and details of how the plans are progressing are due to go before cabinet, the council said. A spokesperson said: "Work on City Hall is progressing well and the building is expected to reopen next year, once work is complete. A full update on progress will be provided to Cabinet in due course." The council was unable to give an exact date for when that progress report would be out. Article continues below

Golfing prodigy Cooper Moore among six teens picked to represent NZ at Junior World Cup

Some of the world's most prestigious golfers have competed in the event before, including 2016 Rio Olympics gold medallist and 2013 US Open champion Justin Rose (England), two-time major winner Jon Rahm (Spain) and the first Japanese golfer to win a major tournament – the 2021 Masters – Hideki Matsuyama. Heading the boys' group is 16-year-old golfing sensation Moore from Christchurch who currently sits 257th in the world amateur golf ranking. It's been a stellar seven months for Moore, who won the New Zealand Amateur Championship in November and the Australian Boys' Amateur last month. He also played in his first New Zealand Open in Queenstown in February. It was in spectacular fashion that the St Bede's College Year 12 student won the Australian Boys' Amateur too, holing out from a greenside bunker to end a dramatic three-hole playoff at Indooroopilly Golf Club in Brisbane. Moore competed at the 2023 edition of the Junior Golf World Cup, which was played at the same course in Japan, and says he will rely on previous experience as he eyes a top-five individual result. 'I think it's going to be pretty helpful,' he told the Herald. 'I feel like I know the course reasonably well, been there before and I guess [I know] what to expect as well with the competition and the way the tournament is run.' He was excited at the prospect of coming up against the best young golfers in the world. 'Two years ago I didn't have the length I have now and I struggled quite a bit with that, so I think it'll be quite nice going back and hitting the ball further. 'My game has definitely gotten better over that time, so it'll be cool to see the improvement.' Also returning to the tournament for a second time is 18-year-old Aucklander Turnball, who has also notched up a number of wins over his short career. Zheng will lead the girls team, looking to continue her strong form in 2025 after winning the New Zealand Strokeplay Championship Women's title last month. She also had a strong showing at the Australian Junior Girls Amateur a week later, with a top-10 finish. Golf New Zealand's talent development manager, Liz McKinnon, and academy coach, Jay Carter, will also travel to Japan next month to support the team. 'This event will provide our players with an amazing opportunity to compete against some of the best young players from around the world,' McKinnon said. 'The golf course and the different environment that Japan provides will test not only their golf skills but their travel, tournament prep and in-event systems.'
