Desert Flower chasing more Classic glory as nine go forward for Oaks
A total of nine horses are in contention for the Betfred Oaks on Friday, with Desert Flower on track to bid for a Classic double. The Charlie Appleby-trained daughter of Night Of Thunder took her unbeaten record to five in landing the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, her first start since ending her two-year-old campaign with victory in the Fillies' Mile. In fourth at Newmarket was Saeed bin Suroor's Elwateen, running a big race on her second career start. She has been supplemented at a cost of £30,000 by her Shadwell connections, who as expected have taken out Falakeyah. Aidan O'Brien has three leading chances of making it an 11th win in the Epsom showpiece, with trial winners Giselle and Minnie Hauk having looked good at Lingfield and Chester respectively while Whirl impressed at York. The Betfred Coronation Cup on the same card features eight, headed by Francis-Henri Graffard's Calandagan, whose last three starts have been runner-up finishes in the Juddmonte International, Champion Stakes and Dubai Sheema Classic. Last year's St Leger winner Jan Brueghel is one of the possibles for O'Brien, with Marco Botti's Giavellotto another of note.

WITCH HUNTER (2.10 Chester, treble) Looks a massive price after a good effort at Ascot last time. He has copped a handy draw in stall two and has had a nudge down the weights. That was just his second run of the campaign and he should take another step forward for it. His draw in stall three should be ideal and he's best over this trip. Duran got the job done nicely at Haydock over this trip last time and a 4lb rise keeps him right in the hunt. Kodiac Thriller got the job done nicely when scooting in over this distance at Thirsk 14 days ago. An 8lb rise in and hike in grade gives him more to do but he's capable of better. Bond Chairman could be a big price on debut for a new yard. He's been out of sorts for a while so has tumbled to 11lb below his last winning mark and this distance is ideal. 3.15 TERM OF ENDEARMENT stormed home to win this last year and can repeat the feat having left Henry De Bromhead for William Haggas. Her return in Dubai was always going to be a warm-up, especially over a trip that stretches her a little. She'll love getting back over 1m6f at an ideal track on ground that suits. Scenic shaped with promise on return at Goodwood last time and looks the main danger. All her best form has come over 1m4f so far but she was staying on strongly last time and should see this out in decent conditions. Sueno was behind her last time having just her third start. She was coming back from a long break so could easily close the gap especially with Ryan Moore in the saddle. Divina Grace was a well-beaten third in a Newmarket Group 2 latest and needs to prove her stamina for this longer distance. HAYDOCK 1.48 FINE INTERVIEW has a run under his belt thanks to a neck third in a big field at Donny in March. He finished last season with an impressive distance win on Town Moor and has more to come. He will enjoy a little bit of juice in the ground and William Buick can steer him home. Durham Castle will go very close if fit for this comeback run. He scored on the sand at Southwell before winning easily on handicap debut at Goodwood in September. He's up 9lb for that smooth success over this trip but he looks capable of improving past that with the Crisford training ream in decent form. Tinto finished strongly when beaten on the nod over 5f at Thirsk earlier this month. He shapes as though going back up in trip will help. Oisin Murphy getting back on board is a plus for King's Lynn who is on the downgrade but still has enough quality to figure. Kodi Lion has been second in good company at Ascot and Donny heading here and likes this trip. He could still be improving. Evergreen Dakota Gold scored at Ripon last time and likes it here. He has place claims up 3lb. 2.23 SHAGRAAN could be overpriced given how well he's been running in hot handicaps. He was in a blanket finish at Doncaster before running another cracker in a big field at York 16 days ago. He has winning form over course and distance and doesn't mind dead ground. Jasour is interesting coming back from a long break. He was third in the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup at last year's Royal Ascot so has class. This is his easiest race for a long time on paper and he's gone well fresh before. No Half Measures looked rusty on comeback at Newmarket earlier this month. He has some smart form over this trip and should build on that return effort. Leovanni was a classy two-year-old and won the Group 2 Queen Mary which is top form. She doesn't want more rain as her Cheveley Park effort on soft ground was her worst of the season. Rage Of Bamby will be sharper for her comeback struggle at York last time but her best efforts have come over further. Seven Questions also needed his comeback at HQ and has run well here before. 2.58 ESTRANGE finished last season with an impressive Listed win over 1m2f at Doncaster on soft ground. She gives the stronger impression that this step up in trip will bring more improvement and there should be a little bit of juice in the ground which she likes. Shaha took a big step up when moving up to this distance at Goodwood on comeback earlier this month. She had plenty left in the tank crossing the line and her fitness is assured. Beautiful Love has her sights lowered slightly after a well-beaten second at York last time. She isn't screaming out for this longer trip but should see it out. She needs a little step up to get her head back in front. The rest need to improve a bundle with Chorus looking the pick despite being no match for Shaha last time out. She is proven over this distance and may improve for that run. 3.33 ALYANAABI looked a different horse on his first run since being gelded here last time. He stormed home over course and distance and looks the type to improve as a four-year-old. Kinross looks the big danger on comeback. He won this way back in 2021 and wasn't disgraced in Group 1s last season. He may not be the force he was but he still has enough to figure. Audience landed Group 2 honours at Glorious Goodwood last year before not enjoying himself dropped to 6f. He is back over his ideal trip here and had a run in Dubai last month so should be fit. His best form would take him close. Spycatcher landed a cosy win at Doncaster on comeback in March and has held his own at this level before. Ruling Court and The Lion In Winter stand Derby ground
Charlie Appleby's Ruling Court had always been viewed more as a Derby contender through the spring and only took his chance at Newmarket due to some sparkling home work – but the gamble paid off. He is now in line for a £2million bonus having won the first leg of the Triple Crown, which concludes with the St Leger at Doncaster in September. The Lion In Winter has leapfrogged his Aidan O'Brien-trained stablemate Delacroix to once again head the betting after an avalanche of support in recent days, having held that position all winter. He missed the Guineas and then raced keenly in defeat at York last week, but better is clearly expected at Epsom. O'Brien could also run Lambourn, Puppet Master and Shackleton. Of The Lion In Winter, O'Brien told Racing TV: 'He just ran too fresh really, he was just very keen because it was his first run. He was up in a gear too high, too early. 'He was just about to start coming forward and then the horse from behind him took his ground a little bit. He might have been third without that. He's been fine since and we were delighted to get the run into him. 'Everything has gone well with Delacroix, he won the Ballysax and then went back and won the Derrinstown (Leopardstown Derby Trial). 'He's a horse we always thought would get a mile and a quarter and if they are high-class horses there's a good chance they'll get a mile and a half.' Meanwhile, Owen Burrows is plotting an audacious bid with Al Wasl Storm after he opened his account at Chester recently. The son of Affinisea – who is closely related to high-class former Irish Derby winner Soldier Of Fortune – is owned by Green Team Racing's Ahmad Al Shaikh, who has seen Khalifa Sat (second at 50-1, 2020) and Hoo Ya Mal (second at 150-1, 2022) both place at long odds in the Epsom Classic, while Deira Mile was fourth behind City Of Troy at 25-1 last term. 'The Derby will be the plan and is what I'm aiming for at the moment,' said Burrows. 'The owner likes to roll the dice and he's had big-priced horses who have been placed in the past. 'He obviously was a bit of a slow learner on debut at Newbury, but he had misbehaved beforehand and he was very colty. He improved (when second) at Lingfield and I know the winner didn't set the world alight in the Lingfield Derby Trial but I felt he had taken a step forwards before Chester. 'He was very professional at Chester and skipped round there, so I'm hoping Epsom doesn't hold any sort of worries for him, but we're 100-1 for a reason and know it's a big ask.' The same owner could also be represented by the Charlie Johnston-trained Green Storm. Johnston has also left in Chester Vase second Lazy Griff. Ralph Beckett's Dante winner Pride Of Arras could meet York rivals Damysus, Wimbledon Hawkeye and Nightwalker again. Saeed bin Suroor's Tornado Alert, fourth in the Guineas, is another to stand his ground, along with Charlie Fellowes' French Guineas fourth Luther.
