Motherwell 3, Morton 0: Well boss pleased to reach last-16 in cup

A first goal in seven months for Aussie striker Apostolos Stamatelopoulos inspired a Motherwell win that puts them into the last 16. The 26-year-old's strike in 52 minutes put the Steelmen on their way to victory, with Tawanda Maswanhise's double making sure of a win that takes Jens Berthel Askou's outfit into the knockouts as Group G victors on 11 points. Stamatelopoulos' strike was his first since a 2-2 draw against Rangers on December 29, having endured months of an injury nightmare. For Maswanhise, it was his fourth in the competition. Askou – who denied midfielder Lennon Miller is in Italy for talks – said: 'When there's something concrete to comment on, we will. 'The goal was to get to the next round. 'We're pleased to finish with the strongest performance in the group stage. Tawanda has the potential to be a very important player for us. I don't care and I don't think he cares how it came.' Well had a penalty claim waved away in six minutes when Stamatelopoulos went down under a Kris Moore challenge and they dominated throughout. As if often the case, Morton nearly took the lead in the 31st minute when Tomi Adeloye fired just over. Six minutes later, Adeloye sent himself through with a neat flick and went down under a challenge from Paul McGinn but ref Ryan Lee was not interested. Morton boss Dougie Imrie was booked for protesting. Well went ahead seven minutes after the break, when Emmanuel Longelo's cross from the left was met on the volley by Johnny Koutroumbis and parried by James Storer, but Stamatelopoulos bundled the rebound over. Come 83 minutes, Liam Gordon sent Maswanhise through to curl past Storer. And he bagged his second with a curling finish into the top right corner from 25 yards out, three minutes into stoppage time.

Stamatelopoulos ready to make mark at Motherwell after injury issues

Motherwell striker Apostolos Stamatelopoulos is looking to make up for lost time after netting his first goal in seven months. The Australian bundled home Motherwell's opener against Morton on Tuesday as a 3-0 win sealed their place in Premier Sports Cup round two. Stamatelopoulos was Motherwell's big-money signing last summer when he moved from Newcastle Jets but the centre-forward tore a thigh muscle on his first start. After hitting his fifth goal of the season against Rangers on December 29, he suffered a calf injury that sidelined him until March – only for a training-ground shot to shatter his wrist before he could make his comeback. 'It's definitely been tough,' said the 26-year-old, who became a father immediately before moving to Scotland. 'I mean, the whole of last season, I would have said, was pretty tough. There was a little bit of run of games where I thought, okay, I'm starting to feel like myself again. And then obviously I got injured again. 'It's the first time that's happened in my career so it's taken a bit of adjusting to get back to that. 'I've had injuries before, but I've only been max eight weeks out. I've only had two before the last season, two big ones in the six years, seven years that I've played professional football. 'So, it's definitely different from anything that I've been used to, but I feel like I'm getting there every day, slowly, slowly. 'So hopefully by the time the season comes, I'm ready to go. I mean, that was the first time I played 90, so I started cramping towards the end, but the body's getting there.' Stamatelopoulos lapped up the chance to net on the rebound from a yard out and is excited about the opportunity to play in Jens Berthel Askou's side, given the creative players that have arrived and the new manager's commitment to getting men forward. 'I mean, no one's really going to remember in six months' time how it went in,' he said of his goal. 'I've just got to live around the box. I feel like my movement was decent, could be a little bit sharper, but that's what I live for in the box. 'Once that went in, it was just like a massive side relief after so long. Getting my first one and thankfully it happened before the season started. 'There were a few times where I gambled the wrong way. And if I'd made a different run, I would have had another couple of tap-ins. 'So, it's just finding that partnership, that relationship with team-mates, knowing what they want to do in certain situations, and then more goals will come for sure.' EnBW head urges speed on new German power plant plan

ESSEN, Germany, Feb 10 (Reuters) - Germany's next government must pick up a stalled draft law on the development of new gas-powered generation capacity quickly, the head of major utility EnBW ( opens new tab said at an industry event on Monday. EnBW is one of a number of companies wanting to build new power stations, along with Uniper and STEAG. A bill for the construction and modernisation of 12.5 gigawatts (GW) of gas power plants was dropped by the now dissolved government coalition last year as it could not reach consensus internally, and with the industry, on its details. A general election is scheduled for February 23, with coalition talks likely to follow as polls suggest no party will have an absolute majority. Any new government "must decide on the power plant strategy," said Georg Stamatelopoulos, CEO of the south-western company that provides services such as power and gas and electric mobility infrastructure, on the sidelines of the E-World conference in Essen. "The message has been received that it must be quick," he added. Stamatelopoulos said the industry needs clarity on an accompanying market design by 2027/28 so that power generators can compete in government tenders to build new capacity. EnBW estimates 20 GW of new capacity are needed up to 2030 to safeguard system stability on the power grids, which by that stage should receive 80% of their supply from wind or solar panels, while carbon-polluting coal plants are being shut.
