G-Dragon concert ticket bots and scalpers kept at bay

G Dragon also announced a world tour to go along with his new album. — Handout PETALING JAYA: As Malaysia's concerts and events continue to generate substantial profits, they are increasingly attracting the attention of unscrupulous parties seeking to exploit the booming industry. During South Korean singer G-Dragon (pic)'s three-day concert ticket sale, over 600 million attempts, suspected to be from ticket bots and scalpers, were thwarted by the event organiser. In response to the huge traffic and malicious attempts to breach its ticketing platforms, Star Planet managing director Datuk Alan Foo said they implemented advanced bot detection and verification measures, including Captcha, to safeguard the integrity of the sales process. 'Our ticketing platform's global security and traffic management system – including Cloudflare and Queue-it – successfully blocked over 600 million malicious or suspicious requests,' he said. Foo acknowledged that due to the overwhelming demand of over 4.5 million users entering the virtual waiting room, some scalpers managed to get through the security measures put in place. For this, he said Star Planet had identified transactions associated with unauthorised resale and invalidated those tickets. 'We strongly advise fans not to purchase tickets from unofficial sources to avoid the risk of cancellation and disappointment,' Foo added. He also confirmed that there may be another round of ticket sales once the unauthorised tickets were identified and cancelled by the organiser. G-Dragon, whose real name is Kwon Ji-yong and a member of South Korean idol group BigBang, is widely known as the King of K-Pop. The singer's entertainment agency Galaxy Corporation said in a statement that fraudulent tickets or tickets resold at a price exceeding the official sale price will be invalidated. Checks on social media found that scalpers were selling his concert tickets in Kuala Lumpur for more than RM20,000. For the record, the most expensive ticket for the artiste's tour in Malaysia, scheduled next month, is about RM1,300, which includes exclusive perks. This prompted backlash from fans, calling out the organiser for allegedly failing to curb the problem, and demanding accountability and transparency. One of them was Siti Aishah Hashim, 29, who was devastated after she could not buy pre-sale tickets despite joining his fan club. She found them resold at inflated prices online by scalpers. Another fan Shahril Nazdi, 30, urged the organiser to take action against those found securing the tickets through illegal channels. Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations chief executive officer Saravanan Thambirajah said a law to oversee the scalping issue should be expedited, referring to a proposal in 2023 when a similar problem occurred during British rock band Coldplay's concert ticket sales. 'Countries like the United Kingdom and Singapore have already enacted targeted legislation to deal with this issue effectively. Malaysia, too, must move in this direction,' he said. In 2023, the government, through the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry and the Communications Ministry, said it would study the legal provisions to prevent scalping. Pertubuhan Mesra Pengguna vice-president Azlin Othman advised consumers to always go for recognised channels when buying concert tickets. She also urged the government to expedite the enactment of a law to curb scalping and further protect consumers. Meanwhile, the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry said it is actively looking into specific legislation to curb the issue and is committed to taking into account the interests of stakeholders. 'This is to ensure that enforcement could be done effectively and this approach is important before a legal framework is finalised,' it said in a statement to The Star. The ministry advised consumers to lodge complaints against scalpers through its official channels.

M'sian Fans Accuse G-Dragon's KL Concert Organiser Of Lying About Bot-Removing Measures

Just when fans thought (or rather, hoped) that the situation couldn't get any worse, it did. Earlier this week, Malaysian VIPs (BIGBANG fans) were left furious after learning that the majority of pre-sale tickets for BIGBANG's G-Dragon (권지용)'s upcoming concert in Kuala Lumpur had been snapped up by foreign buyers using a ticketing bypass. Many took to social media to criticise the organiser, Star Planet Malaysia, for allegedly allowing scalpers to jump the queue and secure tickets that, according to fans, should have been prioritised for local buyers. While the organiser claimed that measures had been put in place to prevent scalping, fans were quick to accuse the company of dishonesty, saying the issue had not been properly addressed. Here's what happened: General ticket sales for G-Dragon's two-day concert in Kuala Lumpur went live yesterday (Thursday, 29th May) at 2pm. VIPs rushed to the ticketing site to secure their seats, only to find that others appeared to have gained access to the queue earlier than expected. This, unsurprisingly, led many to suspect that the scalping issue remains unresolved despite repeated pressure on the organiser to take action. One fan even provided screenshots showing their attempts to purchase tickets. While all this was unfolding, Star Planet Malaysia posted on their official Facebook page, stating that they were in the process of removing bots to ensure local fans could purchase tickets with ease. However, despite these assurances, around 300 tickets were reportedly sold within an hour, even as fans took to social media to complain that they were unable to get past the payment process. Star Planet later removed the aforementioned Facebook post, adding to suspicions that tickets were indeed being snapped up by insiders and foreign buyers. As expected, Malaysian VIPs were outraged by the outcome. Some have reportedly filed police reports against Star Planet over suspected ticket mishandling, while others have launched petitions calling for the organiser to be replaced ahead of G-Dragon's upcoming concert. We also received a screenshot of the now-deleted post where fans accused the organiser of lying about the bot-removing process (as seen above). Regarding the 300 tickets in question, an Instagram user who goes by @/ posted a Reel bragging about successfully purchasing all 300 passes for the concert and reselling more than half, as shown in the screenshots above. This misstep quickly drew backlash, with many accusing the individual of using a bypass to secure the tickets. Although the video has since been deleted, fans were quick to capture screenshots as evidence. A few also posted their conversation with the scalper, who showed no remorse for their actions. Earlier today (Friday, 30th May), Star Planet issued an official statement, announcing that they will launch a further investigation into the matter and that any scalped tickets identified would be cancelled immediately. These cancelled tickets, they added, would be made available for purchase again at a later date. Despite the statement, fans remained unconvinced and continued to question whether the organisers were genuinely taking action, particularly as the issue of tickets purchased by foreign buyers using a bypass was not directly addressed. Regardless, the situation has clearly spiralled out of control, and it remains uncertain how the highly anticipated G-Dragon concert will proceed. 'Kucing 3': Fans LOL At Scalper's Translation Fail While Reselling G-Dragon KL Concert Tickets

Ever since pre-sales for K-pop icon G-Dragon (권지용)'s upcoming concert in Kuala Lumpur went live, all hell broke loose. Concert organiser Star Planet has faced heavy backlash after fans discovered that the majority of pre-sale tickets had been purchased in bulk by foreign buyers using a bypass. In addition, both local and international scalpers have already begun reselling the tickets online. Speaking of scalpers, two individuals stood out for entirely different reasons. One openly admitted to their illegal activity, while the other didn't try hard enough to convince a fan to buy a ticket. Here's what happened: Let's begin with the more light-hearted case. G-Dragon fans have been actively warning others about scalpers, as they could potentially be scammers. One local Twitter user, @/95sflo, shared a screenshot of a DM (Direct Message) they received from a scalper who attempted to trick them into buying Category 3 (CAT 3) tickets for the idol's two-day 'Übermensch' concert at Axiata Arena. However, the scalper's message made it obvious that they are a foreigner, as they had used a translation tool without checking if the translated text was accurate. The DM read: 'Adakah anda masih berminat dengan ticket kucing 3?', a sentence in which the short-form 'CAT' had been mistranslated to 'kucing', the Malay word for 'cat', as in the animal. This led to the fan's hilarious response, asking if the scalper was selling an 'oyen' (orange cat). The post quickly went viral, with many amused by the scalper's failed attempt to deceive the Twitter user. Even TV presenter Hani Fadzil found the situation hilarious. A few suggested that Malaysian fans respond in their regional dialects to confuse foreign scammers, who may be relying on translation tools to convince potential victims. As for the other viral scalper, many took to Twitter to expose an individual named Aqil Zubir, who fans claimed to be notorious for running an unauthorised ticketing service. He posted on his Instagram Story that he had successfully bulk-purchased G-Dragon tickets and planned to resell them at RM900 above the original price. One fan managed to show their conversation with the scalper, where he admitted to using a bypass to secure the pre-sale tickets. Aqil has since made his account private after receiving backlash from fans over his unauthorised ticket purchases. At the time of writing, Star Planet has still yet to address the ticketing and scalping issues, despite being bombarded with messages from fans online. Let's hope the situation doesn't get worse during the General Sales that will go live tomorrow (Thursday, 29th May) from 2pm onwards. Sources: Twitter (1)(2)
