New Updates For Taika Waititi and Shawn Levy's Upcoming STAR WARS Movies — GeekTyrant
There's been movement in the galaxy far, far away. Lucasfilm's Star Wars slate is finally showing signs of life with two highly anticipated projects, Taika Waititi's long-gestating film and Shawn Levy's Star Wars: Starfighter , both getting new updates. Waititi's mysterious Star Wars project has been in development limbo since it was first announced five years ago. Now, it finally has a working title: Cosmic Doom . The production will reportedly go by the name Ghost Truck 6 , according to Nexus Point News. Details about the plot are still under tight wraps, but Waititi is set to direct from a script written by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Tony McNamara ( The Favourite , Poor Things ). Despite the delays, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy remains optimistic about the project and is allowing Waititi full creative breathing room. 'Taika is on Taika time. I've just continually said to him, look, when you feel that you're ready and you can really devote the time, we're going to do it. We'll be waiting. I'm just hoping we get there. That will be a great Star Wars movie.' Waititi previously talked about the project, saying: "I've been developing [the Star Wars film] for a few years, but I think with any film, but that one in particular, it's something I'd really like to get right, so I don't want to rush it. It's going to bubble along on the side." "I wanna capture that joy and entertainment of those early ones like The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi and all those ones, so I'm trying to figure that out. It'll happen." The director also came out and said: "It will pause...a Taika Waititi film. It's gonna piss people off." Waititi has explained that he's looking to create something new with the franchise and expand the universe beyond all of the characters and locations that we're familiar with. While Waititi's film still doesn't have a release date, Shawn Levy's Star Wars: Starfighter is much further along. The studio is targeting a production start this September in London with filming expected to wrap in December. The movie, starring Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth, is set for a theatrical release on May 28, 2027. Initially developed under the working title Kyber Mist with the production name Blue Mist Productions , Starfighter is described as a standalone story set five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker . According to the studio, the film 'is an entirely new adventure featuring all-new characters set in a period of time that has not been explored on screen yet.' With both films promising fresh characters and timelines outside the main Skywalker saga, these updates mark a hopeful shift for Star Wars storytelling on the big screen. It's been a quiet stretch for the franchise theatrically, but things are starting to look more active on the hyperspace horizon.

Ryan Gosling and Will Ferrell starring in Tough Guys
Ryan Gosling and Will Ferrell are to star in Tough Guys. The pair are in talks to join the cast and produce the action-comedy that is in development at Amazon MGM Studios. A synopsis for the film reads: "Fed up with being 'disposable', two henchmen break free from the criminal underworld and rewrite the rules as they abandon their ruthless boss and dodge the elite assassin on their trail." Gosling, 44, is said to have helped bring Ferrell on board for the flick after he was won over by the script, which has been written by Daniel Gold. The two actors have existing relationships with Amazon MGM and Ryan will star in the studio's sci-fi movie Project Hail Mary next year. Will, 58, is also a regular in the studio's projects and featured in the rom-com You're Cordially Invited earlier this year. Gosling is in talks to serve as a producer on Tough Guys alongside Jessie Henderson through their General Admission banner while Ferrell is also in negotiations to produce with Jessica Elbaum through Gloria Sanchez Productions. Meanwhile, Ryan is set to star in the upcoming Star Wars movie Star Wars: Starfighter and director Shawn Levy has backed the Barbie star to bring a "uniquely cool ethos" to the long-running sci-fi franchise. The Deadpool and Wolverine filmmaker said: "If you can have Ryan Gosling in anything you make, do that, because that's going to make the thing so much better and cooler." Levy is convinced that the Hollywood heartthrob and Star Wars will be a match made in heaven. The 56-year-old director said: "I haven't seen that pairing, and that gets me really excited." Gosling's starring role was confirmed at a Star Wars Celebration event in Tokyo in April and Shawn said during the announcement that collaborating with the La La Land actor was a "dream come true". He said: "I had heard at one point that my movie was going to star Ryan Gosling and, believe me, that would be a dream come true for me. So today, I just wanted to tell you here in this room that that rumour is 100 per cent true." The Night at the Museum helmer is determined to tell a "new and original" Star Wars story. He explained: "[There are] so many opportunities to tell a Star Wars story that has all the heart and action and fun of Star Wars, but to do it in ways that are new and original." Ryan explained that the movie is a true passion project as he has loved the franchise since he was a child – with pictures of his Star Wars bedsheets shown to the audience at the event. He said: "The reality is that this script is just so good. It has such a great story with great and original characters. "It's filled with so much heart and adventure, and there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn. "You can see from the picture, I guess I was probably dreaming about Star Wars before I even saw the film. "And it's probably framed my idea of what a movie even was."

Ryan Gosling is not an astronaut in Project Hail Mary's first trailer
Following the success of 2015's The Martian, Amazon MGM Studios has released the first trailer for Project Hail Mary based on another best-selling Andy Weir novel. The film features Ryan Gosling, who's entering his sci-fi era after being cast in Star Wars: Starfighter, as science teacher-turned-astronaut Ryland Grace who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or why he's light years from Earth. The trailer starts with a very bearded Grace waking up from a coma on a spaceship that he discovers is 11.9 light years from Earth. Through a series of flashbacks we learn that Earth's sun, as well as countless neighboring stars, are all dying as a result of a mysterious substance — except one. A reluctant Grace, who has a Doctorate in molecular biology, is recruited as an astronaut to visit this star and hopefully find out why it's not affected in an effort to save mankind. But it turns out Earth isn't the only planet with a dying sun who has sent a savior to this star, and Grace finds himself meeting an alien ally who we only see brief glimpses of in this first trailer. The film is produced and directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller who created the animated Spider-Verse franchise and who wrote and directed the original Lego movie. The Project Hail Mary novel was adapted by Drew Goodard (who previously adapted Weir's The Martian) and the film, which hits theaters on March 20th, 2026, also stars Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub.

Ryan Gosling's Nemesis In 'Star Wars' Film Named; Chad Stahelski Discusses 'John Wick: Chapter 5' Challenges
After months of waiting, we finally have the latest tea on two of the hottest movie franchises and their upcoming sequels. Here, we'll be discussing the newest faces that will be joining the projects, as well as development woes that the filmmakers are currently facing in order to bring these films to life. It's Ryan Gosling Versus Mia Goth In Upcoming 'Star Wars: Starfighter' Ever since we reported on the possibility of Ryan Gosling joining the biggest sci-fi franchise of all time, people have been clamouring for additional information. When the news was first reported, many were first interested in what role the beloved movie star would play. Many have speculated that he might be a Jedi, while others tossed him into the lot of bounty hunters, but nothing was substantiated until now. After almost half a year of waiting, we've finally gotten an update on not only who he will be, but who he is against. Believe it or not, one of the main actors to join Ryan Gosling in this epic adventure is none other than Mia Goth, known for her breakout role as Sara Simms in Luca Guadagnino's 'Suspiria' remake back in 2018. However, she's not here to help save the day — far from it — as she has been confirmed to be the main antagonist for Shawn Levy's 'Star Wars: Starfighter'. Despite rumours running amok that Mikey Madison was supposed to be the big bad of the series, following an offer from the studio, it was Goth who ultimately won out and will be cruising along the stars. But how does she fit in and how will her and Gosling's paths collide? Well, we don't know the exact details, but it has been reported by The Hollywood Reporter that the story will follow Gosling, who is trying to protect a young child from evil pursuers, whom Goth has thrown down her lot with. As to the 'hows' or 'whys' or if it will be like 'The Mandalorian' series, that has yet to be confirmed, with Lucasfilm keeping its lips shut for the time being. The one piece of information that we do know is that it will take place five years after the event of 'The Rise of Skywalker', with Levy saying that it is a 'stand-alone' project and is 'set in a period of time that we haven't seen explored yet'. Filming for the upcoming movie is set to get underway in England before the year ends, with a release targeted for 28th May, 2027 – which gives us ample time to enjoy other 'Star Wars' entries. 'John Wick 5' Creators Wonder If Upcoming Sequel Will Satisfy Fans In our fairly recent coverage, we discussed the shocking news that 'John Wick: Chapter 5' is not only happening, but that it is also an honest-to-God sequel, with Keanu Reeves reprising his role as the legendary — and supposed-to-be-dead — hitman. Many have raised an eyebrow over this, especially with how much Reeves himself stated that he's getting too old to do high-intensity action scenes and re-emphasised to everyone that the character is canonically dead. Despite this, Chad Stahelski, co-creator of the 'John Wick' franchise, has opened up about the challenges of developing the upcoming instalment. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Stahelski has said that it has been 'a bit of a conundrum', to say the least. 'I'm not going to lie to you, it's a bit of a conundrum. Me and Mike Finch — the writer on 4 who's also writing 5 — we've got a pretty good story that I think is cool. Once we have a 50-page book, and if we're feeling it, we'll sit with Keanu and shape this thing. Look, everybody seems to want it. It's a matter of whether we crack it. We're actively working on it. It's just … is it going to be satisfying?' As mentioned in our previous article, Stahelski clarified that the next instalment will move away from the High Table, the shadow organisation that was secretly running the world throughout the franchise, as they've wrapped that storyline up with the conclusion of 'Chapter 4'. He also stressed that he didn't want to disappoint fans of the franchise, especially because they have been extremely passionate about the story and the character ever since it began back in 2014. Despite receiving the go signal for the sequel from Lionsgate, Stahelski has implied that there might not be a fifth instalment, suggesting that this sequel is dependent on whether or not they'll be able to find a good enough story that can satisfy all parties involved — especially the fans.
