Lanarkshire dance school celebrating 20 years in business picks up top gong
Starlight Dance has nurtured the talents of generations of children in East Kilbride. Success was in the stars for a Lanarkshire dance school as it scooped a prestigious gong while celebrating its 20th anniversary. Starlight Dance was crowned Best Dance School for Community Engagement at the Scottish Dance Awards this week, proving that hard work and excellent teaching pays off. The school has been established in East Kilbride for two decades and has grown from a handful of pupils to a full school nurturing the talents of generations of kids. Starlight is non-competitive and as well as exams and shows, offer classes in tap, modern, freestyle, cheer pom and street for boys and girls from walking to adult - so there is something for every age. Jennifer Connolly, who runs Starlight Dance, said: "We pride ourselves on experienced teaching, offering a fun, friendly environment for dancers with progression, teaching technique and building dancers confidence and letting each individual shine! "Our school ethos is: Commit, Set Goals, Do Your Best, Respect, Encourage, Be Kind, Teamwork, Have Fun, Shine Bright and we embody this in all our classes and have Recognition Awards for dancers who really display these values." The school likes to carry this forward into the wider community and does a lot of charity work. Last year Starlighters raised over £4000 for local and national charities including EK Dementia Carers Group, Kilbryde Hospice, Children In Need, British Heart Foundation, Young Minds and Target Ovarian Cancer. Through show programme donations, students take part in Tapathon for Children in Need each year and have pyjama classes for this too. They wear yellow to class for one week to support Young Minds whilst also teaching kids about good mental health. Starlight also run a charity show and split all the proceeds between two nominated charities and have an annual food bank donation in February each year. This year over 40 bags of donations were handed in to Loaves and Fishes charity in the town. Jennifer added: "We believe that we all have an incredible opportunity to come to class each week and do such a joyous things such as dance that we should give back to others where we can and display kindness always. I think this is a great mindset for our dancers to have too. "We also engage with our dancers, not only in classes each week but through fun events such as Halloween classes, annual Family Fun Day, Christmas parties, Share the Love Week and Break the Rules days. We have a planned calendar of events throughout the year." This year the school were finalists in the Scottish Dance Awards in two categories: Best School for Community Engagement and Exam Excellence, scooping Best School for Community Engagement. The accolade topped off a milestone year for the club which is celebrating its 20th anniversary in the town. Jennifer went on: "This really shows how we engage with the community in and outside of the school and we have such amazing results from our exam sessions and fab feedback from examiners each time. "We have our anniversary show coming up in September this year and are doing a week at the Village Theatre to celebrate. We have also had parties to celebrate with all our dancers and our special group photo taken. "I really feel like I've built something special at Starlight. Lots of dancers tell me it's their happy place and it's mine too. I'm really privileged to see my dancers grow up and many have been with me from the beginning. Our dance family is a little community and I love what we stand for. "I hope we can continue to offer great fun classes that build skills that can be taken from the class into life, for many years to come." *Don't miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire. Nobody's Child now has a whole page dedicated to dresses with pockets
Metro journalists select and curate the products that feature on our site. If you make a purchase via links on this page we will earn commission – learn more I was totally oblivious to just how useful it is for a dress to have pockets until my lovely mum very kindly treated me to the Black Gingham Starlight Midi Dress from Nobody's Child last summer. It was as flattering and feminine in the flesh as I'd expected — and best of all, by the end of its debut outing to the pub, I'd had an epiphany; dresses with pockets were well and truly the way forward. And a recent study by Nobody's Child has revealed that I'm certainly not alone in thinking this way — with three-quarters of the 1000 UK women surveyed saying that they wish that more dresses and skirts had pockets. So, in response, they've launched a brand new Dresses with Pockets collection page. A functional yet stylish feature, pockets take away the need for a bag if you're travelling light, and keeping valuables like your phone on your person makes them far less likely to end up lost or stolen. Plus, there's also just something really instinctive about being able to put your hands in your pockets — especially if you're like me, and never know what to do with your hands when posing for photos. Ready to find the perfect dress with pockets for you? From effortlessly stylish day dresses, to more formal options that feel perfect for a summer wedding, here are some of our top Nobody's Child picks. The ultimate playful and feminine silhouette, it wouldn't feel right not to include the iconic Starlight dress. With its thick bra-friendly straps, square neckline, and relaxed skirt, it's the ultimate easy-to-wear midi — go casual with pumps or sandals, or dial things up a bit with a few statement accessories. BUY NOW FOR £69 Everybody needs a staple white midi dress like this one to help see them through summer. 'The Boys' creator gives season 5 update — 'there's no guarantee of who's gonna survive'
"The Boys" season 5 is still filming, but some of the cast and crew took a break from production to tease what to expect in the show's final season. "There will probably be lots of deaths,' show creator Eric Kripke bluntly told those in attendance at the Deadline Studio at Prime Experience. "There's no guarantee of who's gonna survive." He's not the only one saying to expect the unexpected. Nathan Mitchell, who plays the supe Black Noir II on the show, told Deadline, 'There are some things that are coming in season 5 that you're not going to have in your bingo card.' That said, some things have been in the works from season 4, destined to pay off in the next installment. 'I look at the last two seasons … like an accordion,' said Antony Starr, whose portrayal of Homelander is now iconic after four seasons. 'One piece of the accordion is going out and then this is the compression going back in. There was a lot of setup in season 4 for season 5. Everything is gunning towards that climactic end.' Unfortunately, some things you'll see on the screen might also hit a bit close to home, something the show has had to struggle with as the absurdity of real life starts to mirror this satirical show about superheroes gone bad. "[Eric] Kripke and the writers will write the season," said show star Colby Minifie, "and then two years later, the season will come out and things happen in the world that are like [what was written]." Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. "I actually hate that sometimes," chimed in fellow star Jack Quaid, whose character, Hughie, started the series as the lone "normal" person and audience avatar but is now completely involved in the fight against supes beyond his initial quest for vengeance. "It was meant to be dystopian," added Starlight actress Erin Moriarty. "It's become like weirdly reflective." So, who will suffer a shocking fate? What moments will have our jaw on the floor (or one of the show's characters' jaws literally on the floor)? You'll have to watch season 5 when it comes out to know for sure. But in the meantime, make sure to follow all our latest "The Boys" season 5 coverage to stay up to date with the show's final season. Malcolm has been with Tom's Guide since 2022, and has been covering the latest in streaming shows and movies since 2023. Perth mum reveals how son's brain tumour was nearly missed - and how ‘Starlight heroes' lit up his world again
The only hint something may have been wrong was when six-year-old Mateo Domazetovski began squinting and rubbing his eyes. He loved reading and his mother, Ceffra, had also noticed he was holding his books closer and closer to his face. 'I took him for an eye test and three opticians said nothing was wrong,' she said. 'But I just felt something wasn't right so I went to my GP and said, 'I'm concerned,' and she referred me to an ophthalmologist who found optic swelling and said, 'You need to get Mateo to PCH now'.' 'Looking back, he was rubbing his eyes because of the pressure and swelling caused by the tumour,' Mrs Domazetovski said. Brave Mateo spent five weeks in hospital, including on Christmas Day, and Mrs Domazetovski said it was heartbreaking for the family not to be together at home celebrating Christmas over lunch and dinner with extended family. She said she will be forever grateful to The Starlight Foundation for 'lifting the whole family's spirits' when they felt their world was crumbling around them. 'When Mateo was in the Intensive Care Unit, the Starlight people came in and Mateo's face just lit up,' she said. 'They were dressed in their bright costumes, gave him gifts and they were just so bright and bubbly. 'When Mateo was well enough to go down to the Starlight Room in the hospital, where he could do lots of arts and crafts, he ended up falling in love with playing Uno because the Starlight people taught him the game and would sit and play it with him for as long as he wanted to. 'Now Uno is something we play together as a family.' Starlight Children's Foundation chief executive Louise Baxter said Captain Starlight — the superhero of fun who lit up Mateo's world in hospital — visits more than 550 seriously ill children on wards across Australia every day. Starlight supports 33,000 seriously ill children in Australia and marks Starlight Day on Tuesday. The foundation is hoping to raise $1.3 million by the end of June to help keep its hospital programs running nationally.
