Work on constructing a sports centre at Anna Nagar in Tiruchi is progressing at a brisk pace, with the authorities expecting to complete it within a few months. Following requests from residents, the civic body proposed developing sports infrastructure to promote sports and recreational activities in the city. The facility is being established on a 2.3-acre land belonging to Tiruchi Corporation near Uzhavar Santhai at Anna Nagar in Ward 28. A sum of ₹5.51 crore was sanctioned under the State Finance Commission Grant and the Corporation Funds to develop the sports complex. A tender was floated in November 2024, and the construction of the sports centre commenced in January. 'Most of the civil works have been completed, and work on setting up the indoor stadium and courts is underway. Over 50% of the work has been completed, and the pending works will be completed before November,' said a senior Corporation official. The new sports facility will feature an indoor badminton court, a tennis court, a swimming pool, a gazebo, recreational space, and a modern gym. Among civic amenities, the sports centre will have a kitchen-cum-dining hall with an in-house cook, an administrative block, separate accommodation, and changing rooms for sportspersons, sanitation complexes, CCTV cameras, and seating arrangements to view the sport. There would be parking facilities to accommodate 50 cars and two-wheelers. The sports complex will have training programmes for aspirants. The public will be offered a monthly membership programme to access the facility. Officials said the facility would boost the city's sports infrastructure and encourage a healthy lifestyle among citizens, particularly youth.
