Juan Soto 'trying to do a little bit too much' at the plate, Mets president says

NEW YORK — Typically, an end-of-May press conference with David Stearns would revolve around the team's performance up to this point. The Mets president of baseball operations has said that he views Memorial Day as a mark on the baseball calendar that paints a sample size of how the team is performing. But the Mets, who spent 35 days in first place and have the sixth-best record in Major League Baseball, are doing alright. It's their $765 million slugger that's sparking interest and concern. Juan Soto just recorded the worst 50-game start to a season in his career. He entered Friday night hitless in his last 16 at-bats. He has a .224 batting average and .745 OPS, both of which are well below his career averages of .281 and .941, respectively. As May comes to a close, Soto has just eight home runs and has grounded into 10 double plays. For perspective, Soto had 15 home runs at this point last year, and he grounded into 10 double plays in his entire season with the Yankees. "This hasn't been a month where he's performed up to the Juan Soto standard that everyone's become accustomed to, and that's a very, very high standard," Stearns said in a press conference on Friday at Citi Field. "But players go through ups and downs, even the best of players go through ups and downs, and it's our job to continue to help him get through that." Most astonishingly, Soto this year is batting .130 with runners in scoring position. Putting up goose eggs in high-leverage situations is unlike him. In his career, he boasts a .286 batting average with runners in scoring position. "Do I think he's trying to do a little bit too much right now? Yeah. I think he's probably trying to do a little bit too much right now," Stearns said. "And that is natural for a player who cares about improving." How difficult is it to break out of that cycle of pressing at the plate? "I don't know," Stearns said. "I mean, I've clearly never sat in that seat. None of us has, and it's a very unique position that he's in. … Maybe it'll take a bloop, or a couple of bloops. Or maybe it takes connecting on one or two, to exhale a little bit. But I would imagine it is difficult when the results don't come." Soto is coming off a career year in the Bronx, where he hit 41 home runs, scored a league-high 128 runs, and recorded a .288 batting average to go with a .989 OPS. After helping the Yankees get to the World Series, he went through a noisy free agency that commanded the full attention of the league, before winding up in a bidding war between the Bronx and Queens. In December, his free agency finally culminated in a seismic decision to sign with the Mets. Soto's 15-year, $765 million deal is the largest contract in professional sports history. Sure, baseball pundits expected Soto, a generational hitter, to sign a record-breaking deal. But the contract he ended up commanding was a shock to every corner of the industry. Fairly or not, for the rest of his Mets career, Soto's performance will be judged in the context of that contract. The bright lights won't dim even when the Mets (34-22) are playing well right now, one-third of the way through the regular season. Stearns maintained that Soto, while frustrated with his results, is too talented to allow these struggles to persist. He's confident the slugger will turn his season around soon. "He's still helping us win games, and I'm aware that the OPS isn't where he would want it," Stearns said. "It's not where we would want it. It's not where our fans would want it. I get that. But I can't say it's not for lack of work behind the scenes. He's working, he's trying. He certainly wants results at a higher level than what we've seen so far. I'm pretty confident we're going to get those. "But, I also understand it is natural when a player signs a big contract — and this was a really big contract — because the results aren't immediate, there are going to be questions, and there are going to be reactions. And I certainly get that. And I think Juan does too." Deesha Thosar covers Major League Baseball as a reporter and columnist for FOX Sports. Manitoba bear cub that sustained burns from forest fire dies from injuries

The operator of a bear rescue organization in Manitoba delivered sad news on Saturday about a tiny, seven-pound black bear cub that had been rescued with burns to her paws, nose and lips from a forest fire. Judy Stearns of Black Bear Rescue Manitoba said the female cub, whose progress was being followed by many supporters on the group's Facebook page, hadn't survived the night. 'She was such a little fighter and she had overcome so much with this ordeal she went through,' Stearns said in a phone interview. 'It must have been just terrifying because to have lost her mother is one thing, but then the trauma of the smoke and then the pain from her burns, so it's really sad she didn't make it.' Earlier this week the Rural Municipality of Lac du Bonnet, northeast of Winnipeg, was hit by a fire that destroyed 28 homes and cottages and left two people dead. Nearly 20 other fires are burning in the province and the Manitoba government has closed some provincial parks. Stearns said the cub was found hobbling back and forth on a road in the Lac du Bonnet area by someone involved in the fire battle. There was no mother bear in sight, and so she was brought to the bear rescue by the province's natural resources staff. She was coughing and wheezing from smoke inhalation and had singed fur along her back, Stearns said, indicating she may have gone underneath something that was burning. The cub was being called 'Sayen,' which Stearns said was of Indigenous origin and means 'lovely' or 'sweet.' Stearns said she was on the thin side, which isn't unusual for a very young bear and indicated she may have had siblings. 'Despite it all, she was alert and she did have some energy, because she wanted some milk ... But mainly she wanted to sleep. She was exhausted. She slept most of the time for her first 24 hours,' said Stearns. 'But the prognosis from the vet was it's going to be hit or miss.' Stearns said Sayen was the first cub the rescue received that was a fire victim. She said animals typically either outrun fires or succumb to them, but Sayen made it out because she'd made it to a road and was found by a person. She said the cub's death highlights the dangers that wildlife face from fires. 'You get the slower animals like porcupines, they can't flee the fire. And this time of year it's especially devastating because all the little young ones are born. You get squirrels in their nests and little rabbits' nests on the ground, you get cubs like this and they're just decimated,' Stearns said. The rescue posted a picture on Facebook after Sayen's death, showing Stearns' husband, Roger, with the baby bear in his arms. The post explained he was taking the dead cub outside 'to let the wind carry her spirit away.' This report by The Canadian Press was first published May 17, 2025.

Paolini delights home crowd by reaching ‘dream' Italian Open final

AFP | Rome Jasmine Paolini reached the Italian Open final yesterday after ending Peyton Stearns' impressive run in the Rome tournament 7-5, 6-1.. Home hope and sixth seed Paolini became the third Italian woman to reach the Foro Italico final, and the first since her doubles partner Sara Errani was thumped by Serena Williams in 2014. The 29-year-old will face one of Coco Gauff and China's Zheng Qinwen, who beat world number one Aryna Sabalenka on Wednesday night, with that contest the last match of the day on centre court. 'It's a dream of mine to get to the final here. It was a difficult start, thank goodness you were all here to give me a boost,' Paolini said on court. 'I didn't have a great feeling at the beginning of the match but I'm really happy about how I managed to turn it around.' Paolini was favourite to get past unseeded Stearns but early on her American opponent showed why she got to her first 1000 series semi-final by knocking out a succession of big names including Naomi Osaka and fifth seed Madison Keys. Paolini looked way off the pace when she lost the first three games of the match in surprisingly timid fashion, serving weakly and mishitting a host of simple shots. But she slowly began to force herself back into the contest, putting pressure on Stearns to find shots with her serving and finding both more power and accuracy on her forehand. Stearns' frustration was clear to see after being broken to allow Paolini to serve for the set, lashing her racket into her bag before giving herself a telling off in her seat.
