Dearborn's annual Memorial Day parade returns for its 99th year

Many communities nationwide commemorate the holiday with parades, including Dearborn, where city officials say they host Michigan's oldest Memorial Day parade. The parade returned to the east side of the city, taking the original route when the parade first started 99 years ago. The day began with a memorial funeral procession paying tribute to the fallen. "It's a day to say thank you to the families who have lost people who served. It's a day for us to recognize how many people serve in our armed forces from the state of Michigan," Lieutenant Gov. Garlin Gilchrist. Mayor Abdullah Hammoud says the most important part is recognizing those who serve as a community. "I've been attending this festival, this parade, since I was a child sitting on the sideline of Michigan Avenue along with my family, and now to be in the parade itself is truly something special," Hammoud said. The parade started on Michigan Avenue and Schafer Road, its historic home. "I think it kind of honors the tradition that we celebrate during Memorial Day, and just kind of getting back to what it's always been," said Dearborn resident Stephanie Davis. More than 90 groups, including lawmakers, first responders, marching bands from local schools, and community organizations, walked the route. The day wrapped up with a remembrance ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park. For veterans in attendance, it's an opportunity to pay tribute to friends who never made it out of uniform. "People are forgotten about when you stop saying their names and you stop remembering the things that they did, and I think Memorial Day makes sure that that doesn't happen," said veteran and Michigan State Police Trooper Joshua Olszewski.

Stephanie Davis reveals anxiety and dread-filled nights as she gives update on her son Samuel, two months, after he was rushed to hospital twice when he 'stopped breathing'

Stephanie Davis has revealed her anxiety and dread-filled nights after her two-month-old son Samuel was rushed to hospital twice when he 'stopped breathing'. The Coronation Street star, 32, described the ordeal as 'the scariest time of my life' as she took to her social media to share what happened last month. Stephanie said Samuel, who she shares with her boyfriend Joe McKalroy, suffered 'three episodes' and was taken to hospital multiple times to be monitored. Now, the actress has given an update on her son's health as she revealed why she has been quiet on social media in recent weeks. Stephanie - who also shares another son Caleb, seven, with ex Jeremy McConnell - said she has been watching Samuel 'like a hawk' and has spent her nights 'jumping awake'. Alongside images with her baby boy, she wrote on Instagram: 'Heyy, Not posted much recently but haven't had many photos to post since Samuel had his breathing episodes I've just been at home watching him like a hawk. Mum life is so busy you literally don't get a minute, let alone to post! 'Awful last photo of me and my two boys but I literally don't have any of us together. Don't you find you have a camera roll filled with photos of everyone else with your children and none of them with you. 'I've been so anxious since Samuel not breathing and now having 2 episodes, I've spent most of my nights jumping awake with dread to go back to sleep and do it all over again.' Stephanie welcomed Samuel in January and experienced a scary ordeal last month when she found that he wasn't breathing. At just two months old, he faced a 'scary episode' which left him needing to be hospitalised, and she later confirmed he had suffered from a second incident. According to The Sun, she told her fans that Samuel was at a baby sensory class when he suddenly stopped breathing before he was due a feed. The Hollyoaks actress was left in a state of panic and admitted it was 'torture' as a mum to see her son so unwell. The soap star shared how two women outside who worked at the hospital rushed to help and got an ambulance. 'We were just having a nice day and then all of a sudden he's foaming from the mouth with loads of saliva, you lose your head as a mum, it's honestly torture,' she reportedly shared. 'Poor baby has had two lumber punctures and all sorts done to him to get to the bottom of it all. 'It's been a dead upsetting time. I'm trying not to cry again because I've just been crying.' Stephanie revealed Samuel had been hospitalised again as she reflected on the very difficult time. 'He's in the hospital again and we are going back to see them. They've told me to film him next time but I've said that's the last thing on my mind at the time,' she said. 'I'm trying to get him to breathe.' The terrifying update came after she previously detailed the 'the scariest time of my life' when Samuel stopped breathing for the first time. She penned on Instagram at the time: 'I just want to say a massive thank you to Whiston hospital, the staff on the high dependency unit and the staff on the ward for looking after our baby boy and for helping me take him to the hospital and keeping me as calm as she could after what's been the scariest time of my life. 'On Monday Samuel stopped breathing and had 3 scary episodes. I've felt totally helpless & powerless the past few days.' Stephanie described how Samuel was then given a lumbar puncture, a medical procedure where a thin needle is inserted into the lower back to collect a sample of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), the fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord, for analysis. The procedure didn't work so he was then given a head and lung scans and also had to have cannulas inserted into his veins. She wrote: 'He's endured 2 lumbar punctures which unfortunately didn't work & had a bloody tap, a head scan, lung scan & I can't count how many Cannulas he's had to have put in and out plus the rest. 'He's had the full works and every antibiotic to make sure he's ok. It's been an absolutely horrendous & traumatic time & completely powerless watching him go through so much pain but I know they have done everything they can to make sure he's ok.' Stephanie told how she was feeling 'mentally and physically drained' after the terrifying ordeal. She wrote: 'The whole time I have thought about those mums who have poorly babies in hospital for a long time and I honestly don't know how you do it as I'm mentally and physically drained already my anxiety is through the roof think I've gone into autopilot now. 'I've thought about Amy so much these past few days. I'm So grateful for the NHS & how utterly amazing and caring the staff have been. 'Now to be there for him these next few days and look forward to getting him home when we can. ♥️' The actress and her partner Joe welcomed Samuel in January in what they described as a 'traumatic birth'. At the time, Joe told their followers: 'Welcome to the world my beautiful baby boy Samuel McKalroy. 'Named after your uncle the one and only who will always weigh heavy on my heart I wish so much that he could've met you and cherished you as much as I do. 'It has been a traumatic experience but you are finally here in our arms. I never thought I could possibly love your mummy anymore than I already do but this is just so special and an unconditional love I cannot explain with words. 'I love you more than you will ever know.' Stephanie responded to the post: 'Sobbing reading this my heart ♥️ I love you more than anything in this world. I couldn't love you more I'm so blessed to have you as a daddy to our boys xxx you carried me though that, it was so tough ♥️I love you more than you will ever know xxxxxxxx'. The actress revealed she was expecting her second child last August. Stephanie revealed her fertility journey had been a 'rollercoaster' after suffering a devastating miscarriage in 2021. She explained that she and Joe had been trying to conceive for two years and were even exploring IVF, before falling pregnant naturally. Stephanie told OK!: 'I did the pregnancy test at my mother-in-law's. I could not believe it. I've done a million tests over the past two years and videoed them – the one time I didn't, it was positive!' She went on to recall how she and Joe, who she met in a group therapy session in 2021, were left 'sobbing' after a scan revealed they were excepting a baby boy. She said: 'Joe never cries, so when he started that set me off. We were just sobbing on each other. Then the nurse in the room started crying, too.' Stephanie revealed in 2022 that she and Joe had suffered a miscarriage, three weeks into a previously unannounced pregnancy.
