Australia rallies past Japan to secure semifinal spot
SHENZHEN, July 15, (Xinhua): Australia rallied past Japan 79-67 to finish as Group B leader, securing a semifinal spot at the FIBA Women's Asia Cup here. Down by nine points at halftime, Australia bounced back strongly in the second half, outscoring Japan 37-16 to secure a dramatic win. Four Australian players scored in double figures, with Stephanie Reid leading the way with 15 points. Zitina Lusia Aokuso and Sara Blicavs added 14 and 13 points, respectively. "We know how good they are in transition and on the 3-point line. We did a poor job on that in the first half, but holding Japan to 16 points in the second half is a credit to the players' toughness," said Australia coach Paul Goriss. Both teams remained unbeaten after two rounds, and the clash between them lived up to the hype, with a nip-and-tuck first quarter ending in Australia's favor at 26-22. The two sides traded baskets from beyond the arc early in the second quarter, with the score knotted at 35-35 at the midpoint of the quarter. Stephanie Mawuli scored seven straight points as Japan began to take a stranglehold of the game en route to a 51-42 halftime lead. Struggling against the lower-ranked Lebanon and the Philippines in the past two games, Japan rediscovered its offensive groove in the first half, nailing nine 3-pointers on 17 attempts for an impressive 52.9%, compared to Australia's 3-of-11 effort from beyond the arc.

Former Big Ten guard helps Australia to 76-point win on day one of FIBA Women's Asia Cup
The Australian women came out with force on the opening day of the FIBA Women's Asia Cup Sunday in Shenzhen, China. In a 76-point blowout, Australia beat the Philippines 115-39 in Group B play. Shooting guards Miela Goodchild (19 points) and Courtney Michelle Woods (11 points), power forward Sara Blicavs (17 points) and forward Alexandra Fowler (11 points) led Australia in scoring. But of course, it isn't all about scoring. Advertisement Former Purdue Boilermaker Abbey Ellis is tied for the tournament-high in assists with point guard and teammate Stephanie Reid after both recorded nine assists in Sunday's match. In addition to those assists, the shooting guard tallied eight points, three rebounds, two steals and one block against the Philippines. Ellis shot with 100% accuracy on both 2-point field goals (2) and free throws (4), but missed her one attempt from beyond the arc. It was a strong breakout performance for Ellis, who was only added to the Australian team last week after guard Maddy Rocci was ruled out due to injury. 📲 Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Advertisement Ellis' debut this season in Australia's Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) earned her 2024-25 Breakout Player of the Year honors in her rookie year. The shooting guard averaged 9.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.1 steals per game for the Townsville Fire. She shot 40.6% from the floor and 35.1% from 3-point range. The Australian spent her first two NCAA seasons (2019-2021) at Cal Poly before transferring to Purdue, where she opted to take a fifth year of eligibility and played three seasons as a Boilermaker until graduating in 2024. At Cal Poly, the shooting guard started 53 of 54 games played and averaged 15.5 points per contest. As a fifth-year senior at Purdue, Ellis averaged 14.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.3 steals per game. Ellis and the Australians will face Lebanon Monday at 4:30 a.m. ET.

Opals shine to beat NZ in Trans-Tasman Throwdown
Debutant Miela Sowah's sharp shooting and captain Stephanie Reid's dogged defence have carried the Opals to an 88-70 win over New Zealand in the opening game of the inaugural Trans-Tasman Throwdown. After threatening to power away early at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on Wednesday, Australia saw their lead slashed to a single point in the fourth quarter before responding emphatically with a 21-2 surge down the stretch. Perth Lynx guard Sowah top-scored with 23 points, while Reid made life hell for the Tall Ferns' backcourt, racking up five steals and two blocks in an impressive display of defensive basketball. Opals captain Stephanie Reid (L) picked up five steals and two blocks against New Zealand. (Matt Turner/AAP PHOTOS) Townsville Fire duo Alex Fowler and Courtney Woods, also both debuting in the green and gold, scored 12 and 11 off the bench, respectively. ADVERTISEMENT Advertisement "For the most part, consistently, at the defensive end of the floor was where we were at our most solid," Opals coach Paul Goriss said. "That's something we want to hang our hat on. I think we remained calm throughout (the NZ fightback). "I don't think we panicked at any time and we stayed the course." Alex Fowler (C) scored 12 points after coming off the bench in the Opals' win over New Zealand. (Matt Turner/AAP PHOTOS) Forward Sharne Robati (19 points) was easily the Tall Ferns' best in the first meeting between the two sides since the 2023 Asia Cup bronze-medal match in Sydney, which Australia won, and the first bilateral series between the rivals since 2015. Robati scored eight of the tourists' 11 first-quarter points but the Opals had more contributors early and took control 27-17 at the break. ADVERTISEMENT Advertisement NZ, ranked 26th in world, had the better of second-ranked Australia across the middle two quarters, starting with a defence-dominated, scrappy 13-12 second term to cut the home side's lead to nine at half-time. The Aussies missed all six three-point attempts in the third stanza, while the Tall Ferns found their range to knock down five-of-seven, riding an 11-1 burst to win the quarter 27-22 and trim the gap to 61-57 at the last break. Sharne Robati (L) was the best for the Tall Ferns, scoring 19 points. (Matt Turner/AAP PHOTOS) NZ further cut the deficit to 67-66 and had all the momentum, before the Opals went on a match-sealing tear. Led by Reid's defence, the Tall Ferns' turnovers mounted in the closing stages, allowing Sowah, Fowler and Woods to prosper at the other end. The second of the three-game series will be at Sunshine Coast's UniSC Arena on Friday.
