GDOT, Atlanta will have repaving projects happening at the same time this summer

When the weather warms up, paving and road construction season ramps up. But this year is a little bit different. Channel 2's Steve Gehlbach learned that the Georgia Department of Transportation and the Atlanta Department of Transportation will both have major pavement projects happening at the same time. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] 'This summer we are having really a super-charged paving season. A lot of that is due to the pavement condition that we have,' said GDOT spokeswoman Natalie Dale. Channel 2 Action News has reported on parts of metro Atlanta interstates have been crumbling in recent years. Drivers can be prepared for pretty much every major interstate in metro Atlanta getting resurfaced this summer. 'I-285 on the eastside, on the westside. We have downtown connector paving, I-20 paving, 75, 85, as well as some smaller state routes.' GDOT wants world-class pavement for the 2026 FIFA World Cup coming to Atlanta and other big events. It's the same reason the city is also repaving most of its downtown areas this summer. 'But the truth is if you stay ready, you don't have to get ready,' Atlanta City Councilmember Marci Collier Overstreet said. The city council approved $120 million for downtown resurfacing totaling 25 miles. '…really hitting our mandates. We're finally delivering these capital projects and it's time," Overstreet said. 'Work will take place primarily during daylight hours. As always, ATLDOT will continue to coordinate with GDOT to minimize traffic disruptions wherever possible,' the city wrote in a statement. Repaving starts in the next couple of weeks by the end of May, but ramps up quickly. 'We peak during those June, July, August months,' Dale said. 'But this will last into September, October depending on schedule and temperatures.' GDOT encourage drivers to be patient and check its new website dedicated to summer resurfacing. Generate Key Takeaways New cars unveiled for Atlanta airport's plane train Officials at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport unveiled its new plane train cars on Wednesday. The new plane train may not look much different or bigger, but it is brighter and more modern. Officials say it will be quicker too for passengers. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Channel 2's Steve Gehlbach got a look at the first new car on Wednesday. It's one of 14 that will bring the total up to 73 used for the plane train. The people mover connects all terminals and concourses. It currently runs about every two minutes, in a 3-mile loop. The cars come from the same company that built the system in Atlanta in 1980 and it may not look that much different. 'A lot of the technology has been updated, mitigate obsolescence, make the vehicles more reliable and of course, some aesthetic improvement,' said Jason Aguirre with Alstom Transporation. It will also run more frequently, every 90 seconds using up to 15 four-car trains combined with the new tunnel built for the extension. TRENDING STORIES: The new section of tracks and additional turnaround area will be fully up and running by the first quarter of 2026. 'It will dramatically improve the efficiency and capacity of our people mover system, ensuring we're ready to serve the increasing number of travelers who pass through Atlanta each year,' said Ana Maria Taroco, assistant general manager for Hartsfield-Jackson. Passengers will still see some of the old cars on the tracks after the first 14 are delivered. The rest of the fleet, which includes 10 cars added when the international terminal opened 15 years ago, will be replaced in the next few years. [SIGN UP: WSB-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter]

Heads up, drivers! Major road near Kennesaw Mountain to be closed for months

A major road connecting west Cobb to Interstate 75 will close this week. Commuters and visitors to Kennesaw Mountain will have to find a detour. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] The Stilesboro Road project will happen in three phases. The first was supposed to start on Tuesday, but was pushed back to Thursday. Traffic backs up on Stilesboro Road each morning near Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. It will shut down from Gilbert Road to Old Mountain Road. 'It's going to be pretty bad,' one driver told Channel 2's Steve Gehlbach. 'With everybody working, school, all that, it's definitely going to cause issues,' another driver said. The detours will be on Barrett Parkway to Old Highway 41, Cobb Parkway or going around to the south on Burnt Hickory to get to Whitlock Ave through Marietta. 'To give the public some time to prepare for this closure, we have delayed that closure to Thursday, May 8th,' said Cole Blackwell. TRENDING STORIES: Blackwell is the general manager for Cobb County-Marietta Water Authority. He says crews are replacing an aging, 30-inch pipe with a new, 12-inch watermain as the utility tries to re-route lines around the national park. 'The pipeline along Stilesboro Road is over 60 years old. It's time to replace the pipe,' he said. Crews will also relocate other infrastructure to make way for new roundabouts at Old Hwy 41 and Kennesaw Ave. But that means headaches for drivers as a connection to and from West Cobb is closed. The first phase will be completed in early August, then move up to a section up to the visitor's center with the final piece finished sometime this fall from the park entrance to Old Hwy 41. 'Our goal is to maintain access to the visitor's center, to the park, 100% through this project,' Blackwell said. Once utility work on Stilesboro Road is done, look for closures on Old Hwy 41 with construction of those roundabouts to start sometime in summer 2026. [SIGN UP: WSB-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter]
