Springboks to play best against All Blacks in Rugby Championship
The Boks are done with experimentation, for now, and will be picking close to their strongest squad. Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus will name a reduced squad of 36 players for opening two games of the Rugby Championship against Australia in due course. Picture: Dirk Kotze/Gallo Images The Springboks will be unleashing close to their very best team against the All Blacks in the Rugby Championship, after giving 46 players a run during their first four games of their 2025 international campaign. Over the past weekend the Boks' incoming series came to its end, which included two games against Italy in Pretoria (42-24) and Gqeberha (45-0), and a one-off Test against Georgia (55-10) in Mbombela, while they started their season against the invitational Barbarians (54-7) in Cape Town. All 46 players picked in the squad for the opening four games got a run, with Evan Roos and Ethan Hooker getting the least amount of game time, with both playing just 24 minutes in the second Test against Italy. Every other player at least played more than half a game of rugby, with five players playing once, including captain Siya Kolisi who missed the first three matches through injury, which means 39 players got two run outs or more over the opening four games. Smaller Bok squad A reduced squad of 36 players for the first two games of the Rugby Championship was set to be named on Tuesday, but it has now been delayed and will be revealed at a later date. Speaking ahead of the Georgia game, Bok assistant coach Mzwandile Stick was asked when the management would be aiming to work with a smaller group of players that they would be focussing on going towards the 2027 World Cup in Australia. Stick explained that it was far too soon to be looking at a group that would be playing in that tournament Down Under, but that they would certainly be playing close to their current best group during the Rugby Championship. 'We definitely aren't looking that far ahead yet. Yes, we have a goal going up to 2027, but the main thing at the moment for us is focusing on this season and building our squad depth, while also still winning,' said Stick. 'Because at the end of the year there is a draw for the World Cup and we have to make sure we are in a good position for the draw. On the other side we want to achieve our goal for the season. Tough games 'In the Rugby Championship we are going to have tough games against Australia (at home), New Zealand twice away from home and Argentina (home and away). So we probably will get close to our best possible 35 players that you will see in those (big) games. 'We aren't even thinking about who will be in the World Cup squad come 2027. If you look at some of the youngsters coming through, we are in a really good space. But the closest we will come to our best team will be in the Rugby Championship when we face the All Blacks.' After the match against Georgia, coach Rassie Erasmus also admitted the Boks wouldn't be experimenting much in the Rugby Championship, and that a more settled and tried and tested group would be picked for the first two games against Australia, before another group is picked to go to New Zealand. 'Within that (Rugby Championship) squad, there'll be one or two guys that we experiment with, but the bulk of that squad will be experienced players who are suited to the way we want to play. The Rugby Championship is a step up to tier-two nations, the Barbarians, and the Italy matches,' explained Erasmus.

Springboks target win over tricks in Georgian Test
The Springboks are targeting the win first, before unleashing new tricks, in their final mid-year Test against Georgia, says assistant coach Mzwandile Stick. Springbok assistant coach Mzwandile Stick says they are focusing on the win over tricks in their match against Georgia. Picture: Dirk Kotze/Gallo Images The Springboks will be focusing on the win before unveiling any new tricks, according to assistant coach Mzwandile Stick, when they take on Georgia in their final incoming series match of the season at the Mbombela Stadium on Saturday night (kick-off 5:10pm). The Boks have enjoyed a solid start to the season, with a 54-7 win over the invitational Barbarians in Cape Town and a 42-24 win over Italy at Loftus, before they unveiled a full bag of tricks in their entertaining 45-0 thrashing of the Italians in the second Test in Gqeberha over the past weekend. The match has become a major talking point in World Rugby, after the Boks unleashed two new trick plays, the short kick-off and the midfield 'fake lineout' maul, which has garnered much attention, mostly positive from in South Africa and mostly negative from outside. With the Boks having a final chance to try out some new moves against Tier 2 Georgia this weekend, Stick admitted that if the chance arises they could do something, but that their full focus was on securing the result first. 'We always try to build our game. We don't want to become a team that is predictable in the way we play. I think creativity in our team is something that we try when we get an opportunity. You can see some of the tricks we used (against Italy),' explained Stick. Springbok DNA 'But we don't want to lose our DNA and what makes us Springboks. We still want to improve our set pieces. We still want to improve how we play the game defence wise when it comes to momentum, and we still want to improve at the breakdown. Against Italy we had a big challenge there. 'So tricks wise we will keep on evolving and trying things. As long as they are by the letter of the law. The nice thing is we have a very experienced (former) ref in Jaco Peyper in our management team. So we always bounce ideas and get approval from him. 'If there is an opportunity for us to try something different we will. But we are also well aware that the Georgians also might try somethings. So we can't get too comfortable and our main focus is to win the game.' Although the Boks are heavy favourites, despite them again rotating their match day squad extensively, Stick said that Georgia would bring a unique physical challenge, especially in the scrums, which they are relishing. 'We are playing against Georgia. This is one of the toughest teams that you will play when it comes to the physical side of the game. Set piece wise, especially when it comes to the scrums, and we know how they take pride in making big contact in the game,' said Stick. 'I also like how passionate they are. I have been to Georgia before and those people are very tough human beings. So it is going to be a tough one, but the more we execute our plan the better it will be.'

Boks ready to rock and roll against Georgia in festive Mbombela, says captain Kolisi
Maybe it is something in the water of the Lowveld, possibly it is the air, but there is nothing quite like the atmosphere of a Springbok match at the Mbombela Stadium, where the Springboks host Georgia on Saturday evening (5.10pm). The Boks have a perfect record at the wildlife-themed stadium that was built for the 2010 soccer World Cup. Last year, they put on a terrific show in celebrating Eben Etzebeth's record as the most capped Springbok by blasting Argentina off the park. The year before, the Boks were outstanding in outclassing the All Blacks at a venue where the stand supports are in the shape of giraffes. The Mbombela Stadium is also where Siya Kolisi made his debut for the Springboks in 2013 and, fittingly, it is here that he will play his first international match of the season, having shrugged off injury. 'It's always fantastic to play here, I will never forget my debut in this stadium against Scotland,' said Kolisi. 'The vibe at the stadium is always amazing, and we know that it will be similar to last week in Gqeberha, where the crowd really got involved and inspired us. We are very grateful to the people coming to the stadium. They definitely lift us, so we are grateful for their support.' Kolisi is back in his familiar No 6 jersey after missing the series against Italy and the warm-up against the Barbarians. 'It has been tough not playing. I would have loved to have been involved sooner, but just being in the camp and seeing all the guys again has been good for me,' he said. 'The environment in the team helps a lot both on and off the field.' One of Kolisi's tasks in the game will be to reassure the three players making their debuts in the Bok front row. Props Boan Venter and Neethling Fouche, and hooker Marnus van der Merwe are uncapped. 'I'm very proud of the guys earning their first Test caps, and as a group, we feel there is enough experience in the team for them to know we have their backs. 'They've been training against the likes of Ox (Nche), Wilco (Louw), and Malcolm (Marx), among others, and the players around them have played Test rugby before. Over and above that, a scrum is not only about the front row, it involves everyone in the pack doing their bit, and everyone in the team knows what they have to do.' Springbok assistant coach Mzwandile Stick spoke highly of the Georgians and said the Boks know exactly how tough their players are, and how passionate they will be to represent their country. 'Georgia are a physical team, and they pride themselves on their set pieces, so we know having to match that will be the toughest part for us,' said Stick. 'I've been to Georgia, and I've seen how tough their players are, but the key for us is to improve on our standards consistently. As coaches, we feel there is still room for improvement, so we are hoping to see the players execute the game plan as well as possible and to play with the intensity we expect.' Both Stick and Kolisi wished the Junior Springboks luck for their World Rugby U20 Championship final against New Zealand on Saturday. 'We follow all their games, and they are certainly making the country proud,' said Stick. 'One can see that they know what it means to represent the country, and what stands out for me is their fighting spirit and the cohesion in the team. We'll watch the game and support them all the way.' Kolisi added: 'They are definitely setting a standard, and it's great to see how they are taking their opportunities. Everyone in the squad is doing what is expected of them, so we wish them well.' The Junior Boks' final in Italy kicks off at 8.30pm.
