Showers and storms through the holiday weekend

We are starting Friday with some showers and isolated rumbles of thunder. There will be more showers and storms around by mid-morning. Strong to severe storms will be possible as early as this morning. Rainfall will be heavy at times too. The threat of a tornado is low and will mainly be to the west. Some stronger storms, especially between Central and Eastern Kansas could last into the afternoon. Evening storms to the west will need to be monitored closely. There could still be some flare ups farther east too. A Flood Watch will go into effect this evening but only for Chautauqua County. If you live in a low-lying, flood-prone area, please be aware of your surroundings with multiple days of rain on the way. High temperatures today will range from the upper 60s to the 80s. Temperatures through the holiday weekend will be cooler than average. Storm chances will gradually decrease after Saturday. Saturday will be one of those days where if it is not raining where you are, it will likely be raining somewhere else. Be ready to be woken up Saturday night by thunder and heavy rain. There will be another severe risk Saturday too. The threat of a tornado will be to the southeast where there is a Slight Risk. Showers and storms will continue to be around through the day Sunday. A severe risk Sunday will be confined to southern portions of the area. Conditions will not be the best for outdoor activities on Memorial Day. Monday will be cloudy, cool, and damp at times. We will get a break from storms Tuesday but it will be brief, storm chances make a quick return Wednesday. Storm Track 3 Forecast: Friday's severe storm threat, more rain this weekend

Dry and comfortable through this evening. Moisture will return to the region overnight in the form of clouds as a weak disturbance enters the region. While a few sprinkles and showers are possible overnight over Western Kansas, this disturbance gets its act together for more organized and scattered showers late Friday morning into the afternoon over Central and Eastern Kansas. Attention then shifts to our western counties late Friday afternoon. Clouds may break for sunshine. Isolated storms will develop after 4 PM Friday to the northwest. Large hail is the primary concern where a Slight Risk is highlighted. Winds could also be locally damaging. A landspout cannot be ruled out although the threat is low over Northwest Kansas and Southwest Nebraska. After sundown, this round of severe weather will drop. However, more moisture will get siphoned this way and interact with a boundary to create scattered rain and storms Friday night. Some of this rain may be locally heavy. There will also be a locally damaging wind and hail threat. This round should run out of gas by Saturday morning. Clouds will linger over the holiday weekend. This will keep temperatures cooler than average. Trends for Saturday keep getting cooler as the next piece of energy comes into play. By Saturday evening, the strongest thunderstorms will form along the Kansas/Oklahoma state line with a higher threat for severe weather in northern Oklahoma, closer to the parent low pressure system. Damaging winds and hail are the main threats in any stronger storm along with localized heavy rainfall. Additional rain and storms are possible Sunday and Monday. Memorial Day is looking wetter with today's weather model guidance. A Flood Watch is in effect for Chautauqua County through Sunday. A healthy 1″ to more than 2″ will fall with the highest expected to the south/southeast where the watch is in effect. Temperatures will trend cooler into early next week before warming on Wednesday. We will get into a pattern starting Tuesday evening of stormy complexes riding down the High Plains into the core of Kansas. This will keep rain and storm potential off and on, offering assistance for our drought. KSN Storm Track 3 Forecast from Chief Meteorologist Lisa Teachman:Wichita:Tonight: Partly to mostly cloudy. McConnell moving aircraft ahead of severe weather

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – With severe storms expected to hit the Wichita area Sunday and Monday evening, McConnell Air Force Base is relocating aircraft to protect them from potential damage. Aircrews from the 22nd and 931st Air Refueling Wings began moving the base's fleet of KC-46A Pegasus and KC-135R Stratotanker aircraft to other military installations across the country on Saturday afternoon. The National Weather Service forecast includes the potential for damaging winds, large hail, and possible tornadoes. Storm Track 3 Forecast: A few severe storms tonight, tornadoes possible Sunday Relocating the aircraft ensures they remain mission-ready and avoids any disruption to ongoing or future refueling operations, officials said. Aircraft currently undergoing maintenance will remain at McConnell but are being stored inside hangars. Flightline vehicles and other equipment are also being secured as the base prepares for a range of possible severe weather outcomes. For more Kansas news, click here.
