Jenna Ortega struggled to cope with Wednesday stardom

Wednesday star Jenna Ortega has admitted she was an "unhappy person" after feeling increased pressure and attention when she shot to global fame in the Netflix series. The first season, which sees Ortega play the morbid character Wednesday Addams and arrive at a mysterious private school, is listed by the streaming giant as its most popular show - ahead of Stranger Things and Adolescence. The American actress, 22, who had roles in Netflix series You and Disney Channel show S tuck In The Middle before Wednesday, told Harper's Bazaar that she felt "incredibly misunderstood" when she became famous. "To be quite frank, after the show and trying to figure everything out, I was an unhappy person," she also said. "After the pressure, the attention - as somebody who's quite introverted, that was so intense and so scary." The series, which sees Wednesday try to control her emerging psychic ability and solves crimes, is returning for a second season, with Joanna Lumley joining the cast as Grandmama and Steve Buscemi as Barry Dort, the new principal of the school, Nevermore Academy. Ortega also said "you just don't feel like you're being taken seriously", after explaining that she has to wear a schoolgirl outfit in the show when she is a "young woman". She said: "It's like how you're dressed in the schoolgirl costume… There's just something about it that's very patronising. Also, when you're short, people are already physically looking down on you." Ortega also said that it is different for rising female stars "if they don't stay as this perfect image of how they were first introduced to you, then it's 'Ah, something's wrong. She's changed. She sold her soul'. "But you're watching these women at the most pivotal times in their lives; they're experimenting because that's what you do." The actress follows child star Millie Bobby Brown, who has also made remarks hitting out at social media and the press for making comments about her growing older. Stranger Things actress Brown, 21, wrote on Instagram that the media "was dissecting my face, my body, my choices" because they think she should be "frozen in time" as a child actor. She also wrote: "Disillusioned people can't handle seeing a girl become a woman on her terms, not theirs. I refuse to apologise for growing up. "I refuse to make myself smaller to fit the unrealistic expectations of people who can't handle seeing a girl become a woman." However, Ortega did say she was "very grateful" for the fans of Wednesday, who have copied her viral black dress dance, and enjoyed the programme, and said she hopes to make "older and bolder and different" projects in the future. Since Wednesday saw her nominated for an Emmy and Golden Globe, Ortega has been in the 2024 Beetlejuice sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and 2025 dark fantasy film Death Of A Unicorn. Wednesday season two, which sees Welsh actress Catherine Zeta-Jones continuing to play Morticia Addams, comes out on Netflix on August 6 with a first part and a second part coming on September 3. Created by cartoonist Charles Addams, the macabre family have inspired a 1960s TV show, and 1990s films starring Anjelica Huston and Christina Ricci, who also appears in Wednesday as a teacher.

What the heck is ‘Tudum'? What we know about Netflix's live global fan event this weekend

People who watch Netflix but don't closely follow the platform's announcements are probably wondering this week: What the heck is 'Tudum'? If you're a fan of Netflix originals, you might recognize it as the sound that plays before a Netflix original movie or series and when you open the app. But it's also what the platform has named its global fan event (which is coming later this week) and its' companion website that has exclusive interviews, behind-the-scenes content and bonus videos. Here's what we know about the upcoming Tudum event this week and how to watch it live. 'Tudum' is the spelled-out version of the sound that plays before Netflix's original movies and series. It's also the name of the streaming platform's 'companion site,' which helps viewers 'find and fuel' their fandom for the Netflix shows and movies they like, according to Netflix's website. 'On Tudum you'll find exclusive interviews, behind-the-scenes content, bonus videos and more,' Netflix's website says. 'And if you log in with your Netflix account, you'll get a more personalized experience based on the TV shows and movies you've recently rated or watched on Netflix.' 'Tudum' is also what Netflix calls its yearly global fan event, where Netflix spotlights its movies, shows, stars and creators. This will be the fifth-ever Tudum event, which began in 2020, and this year, it will be streaming live. Look back at Tudum 2023: 5 things we learned from Netflix's Tudum event, including Stranger Things and Squid Game casting news If this is the first year you're hearing of Tudum, it's because this year is the first time the event will be streamed directly onto the platform. 'Tudum has evolved across multiple formats — festival, livestream, and digital almanac — cementing its place as a signature global event. In 2023, Tudum returned to São Paulo, drawing over 35,000 in-person attendees and recorded more than 78 million views across Netflix's global social channels,' Netflix's website says. 'Now, Tudum LIVE returns on May 31, 2025, streaming live at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET from the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.' This year, Lady Gaga will take the stage for a performance and Sofia Carson, who starred in Netflix's 'Purple Hearts' and 'Carry-On,' will host the event. According to Netflix's website, the event will be 'stacked with Netflix news' and reveal exclusive details about new shows and movies slated to hit the platform. Here are some of the shows and movies that Netflix says will be represented at the event: "Emily in Paris" "Frankenstein" "Happy Gilmore 2" "Love Is Blind" "ONE PIECE" "Outer Banks" "The Rip" "Squid Game" "Stranger Things" "America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders" "The Life List" "Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery" "Wednesday" "WWE" Tudum 2025 will stream live on Netflix at 8 p.m. ET this Saturday, May 31, from the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. ‘Eurydice' Star Maya Hawke on Making Her Off-Broadway Debut, the End of ‘Stranger Things,' and Her Fan Letters to Emma Stone

What do you mean when you say you're trying to figure out if you still have those skills? First of all, let me say that I fell in love with acting doing a Greek play. The play I did that made me want to be an actor was Euripides's The Bacchae. I played Agave and we did it in masks, which was the traditional Greek way. There was this community-building effort that occurred, and it's happened in almost every play I've ever done, where you become a part of this troupe and this team and you almost try to magically conjure the story, and it is as much about the rehearsal process and table work as it is about the product. But then I started working, and my first job was [the BBC's Little Women], and I was supposed to do a play right after that, but the funding fell through and the play didn't happen. And things like that kept happening. I was gonna do a different play and then the Stranger Things schedule didn't work, or I got scared about my voice. I think endurance is the most different part. In film work you can kind of hurt yourself, but it's okay because you don't have to do it again tomorrow. You can scream so loud that you hurt your voice, but it's okay because that was the screaming scene and you don't have to do the screaming scene tomorrow. Or you can do a stunt and really give it your all and get sore and hurt yourself a little bit. In the theater you have to build a performance that has endurance, that takes care of your voice for the whole run of the show, that takes care of your body for the whole run of the show, and takes care of your emotions for the whole run of the show. Completely. On that note, I wonder what it is like to channel so much grief every single night. Are you exhausted? Yeah. It's also fun. It's as exhausting when you do it right as when you get it wrong. Because when you don't meet your own expectations of emotional connectivity, then you punish yourself. And I can't say that I've totally figured it out yet. But I believe that what I'm trying to do and what I think actors generally are trying to do is to exist simultaneously in the reality of the world of the play and in their own emotional reality, and to allow those two worlds to blur and cross like a kaleidoscope.
