BBC 'scrutinised over differing treatment of stars accused of offensive language'
BBC bosses have been called out after MasterChef presenter John Torode appeared to receive harsher punishment than EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick over use of offensive language Bosses at the BBC face a grilling over why John Torode and Jamie Borthwick were treated 'differently' after both stars used 'offensive language'. MasterChef star Torode, 59, was sacked by the broadcasting giant after a complaint John used " highly offensive racist language" was upheld. EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick, 31, was suspended in June after 19 years playing fan favourite character Jay Brown when he was accused of using a slur targeted at disabled people while on the set of Strictly Come Dancing. However, now executives at the BBC are facing questions over why the pair have differences in their treatment with Torode losing his job entirely, while Borthwick faced a suspension. A source has said:"The difference in treatment between John and Jamie - for very similar incidents - has left questions to be answered. The BBC have tied themselves into knots with this - for them both stars appear to have used unacceptable and offensive language but only one has been sacked while another has kept his lucrative salary and got away with just a suspension." They continued to The Sun: "Disabled colleagues have been left wondering why incidents of ableist slurs seemingly aren't being taken as seriously as racist language and there are no clear answers coming from bosses." Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the BBC told MailOnline: "Whilst we do not comment on any individual matter, each case is always considered on its own facts. We are very clear on our expectations that inappropriate behaviour and language will not be tolerated." A video obtained by The Sun last month saw Jamie captured describing the residents of Blackpool, where the show was filming at the time, as "m********s." Co-star Wynne Evans was reportedly backstage with Borthwick at rehearsals and heard saying "Oh my God" when he made the comment. Borthwick has since apologised for using the term and admitted that he had not fully understood the derogatory nature of what he said and is now "deeply embarrassed." The soap actor said in a statement, which read: 'I want to apologise sincerely and wholeheartedly for the words I used in the video showing my reaction to making it through Blackpool week on Strictly. 'I am deeply sorry for any offence and upset my words and actions have caused. It is no excuse, but I did not fully understand the derogatory term I used and its meaning. That is on me completely. 'Now I am aware, I am deeply embarrassed to have used the term and directed it in the way I did. It was wrong." He went on to issue an apology to the people of Blackpool and reiterate his regret over his words. The Mirror has contacted a representative of the star for comment at the time. Meanwhile, MasterChef star John Torode was sacked earlier this week after he came forward as the unnamed person in the firm Lewis Silkin's report, commissioned by Banjiay, into the conduct of John's co-host Gregg Wallace, following allegations of misconduct. The upheld complaint about John was "an accusation of highly offensive racist language against", which John has vehemently denied. Torode has insisted "he had absolutely no recollection" of using the racist term. John denied the allegation in a statement which read: "Following publication of the Executive Summary of the investigation into Gregg Wallace while working on MasterChef, I am aware of speculation that I am one of the two other individuals against whom an allegation has been upheld. "For the sake of transparency, I confirm that I am the individual who is alleged to have used racial language on one occasion. The allegation is that I did so sometime in 2018 or 2019, in a social situation, and that the person I was speaking with did not believe that it was intended in a malicious way and that I apologised immediately afterwards. "I have absolutely no recollection of any of this, and I do not believe that it happened. However, I want to be clear that I've always had the view that any racial language is wholly unacceptable in any environment. I'm shocked and saddened by the allegation as I would never wish to cause anyone any offence." The BBC announced on Tuesday (July 15) that Torode's contract was not going to be renewed and he was later sacked from MasterChef.

"As you know, I spent three years in university learning to dance, I have a degree in dance - it doesn't make me a good dancer, obviously. However, he acknowledged his wife's reservations: "But my wife really doesn't want me to do Strictly, I've spoken about it very publicly, but she's not interested in me having an affair." Ben humorously remarked on his wife's stance: "I think she's being very narrow-minded and it could be a great opportunity, who knows what could happen? "It would be an amazing experience, I love a bit of spangle and glamour on a Saturday night... "As things stand though, that's a negotiation that needs to happen between the BBC and my wife. In a recent broadcast of Heart Breakfast, the Britain's Got Talent judge revealed that she "cannot wait" to enjoy her family holiday, but issued a word of caution to any would-be thieves Amanda Holden has issued a six-word warning to any potential burglars as she gears up to jet off on holiday with her family. In a recent broadcast of Heart Breakfast, her radio co-host, Jamie Theakston, announced that Amanda was "off on holiday" and inquired whether she was looking forward to her break, to which Amanda replied that she "cannot wait". Amanda, who is set to jet off with her husband, record producer Chris Hughes, and daughters Lexi and Hollie, has enjoyed a number of overseas trips over the last year or so, including jaunts to Barbados, Dubai and Corfu. Yet, Amanda's latest trip doesn't give her any cause for concern regarding security. In fact, there's a perfectly good reason why, but she also issued a word of caution to any would-be burglars. During the show, Jamie addressed his Heart FM colleague by asking: "Amanda, you're off on holiday. I bet you can't wait?" She replied: "I cannot wait. Me and the children and my gorgeous husband, we are gone! But don't go and burgle my house because it's gonna be full up with people. So, just giving you a little note." In February, Amanda left her fans gobsmacked, as she reportedly looked like her teenage daughters ' sister in a photo taken in Barbados. In the snap, she was wearing a black dress as the family enjoyed dinner. In the post, Amanda captioned it with "Me and my girls" alongside a black heart emoji. Fans descended on the comment section to share their words of admiration for the BGT judge. One person said it was a "gorgeous family pic", pointing out that they "look like sisters", adding that "Hollie has grown into a stunning young lady." In related news, Amanda was reportedly left red-faced after accidentally flashing her workmen. Speaking on Heart FM, she revealed that she'd opted to have a time-lapse camera set up outside as she'd been doing some work in her garden. However, after it was set up, the electrician told her it had been rolling for a few days, much to Amanda's surprise, as she admitted that she's "always naked in her back garden". She said: "No word of a lie, I have definitely been naked and then for a joke the other day, I was sorting something out in the garden and my husband waved at me, from the bedroom window, and I flashed my boobs at him." Amanda explained that she had "no idea" the camera was up, and now "Andy's going to be reviewing this footage", so she needs it "deleted".

The presenter of Good Morning Britain made an announcement on her Instagram account on Saturday (July 19), revealing that she has recorded an episode for the BBC's The Weakest Link. She posted a collection of behind-the-scenes photographs from the set of the legendary quiz show, which is scheduled to be broadcast later in the year. Charlotte joined forces with celebrities such as Coronation Street's Sue Cleaver, Strictly Come Dancing alum Nicola Adams, and comedian Josh Widdicombe for the filming. Her caption read: "Some exciting filming - taking part in The Weakest Link! Just a bit terrifying... you'll have to watch later in the year to see how we all did! #weakestlink #quizshow #quiz.", reports the Mirror. On Tuesday's programme (July 15), Charlotte and co-host Richard Madeley engaged in conversation with Tristan, a man mourning the loss of his wife to breast cancer. Dr Susan Michaelis, prior to her passing, was a staunch advocate for research into lobular breast cancer, a condition she battled for 14 years. During her conversation with Tristan on the programme, Charlotte appeared to be visibly moved as the interview came to a close. Tristan expressed his gratitude: "Thank you to all the women who have this disease, for giving it some airtime." To which Richard responded: "Oh, it's you that deserves the thanks." Charlotte then remarked: "Thank you for coming in when this has only just happened, and you know, I know that obviously, you were supremely proud of her and everything she was doing." As the ITV presenter spoke, it was evident she was becoming emotional, with her voice wavering and tears nearly escaping. She went on to say: "I know she would be so proud of you continuing this fight. Sorry, it's one of things that have effected a lot of people this morning." Tristan informed the hosts that the Lobular Moon Shot Project is the most politically backed campaign currently and he is determined not to cease until the funds are secured for the researchers. His wife, who tragically died earlier in the month, initiated the Lobular Moon Shot Project in 2023 with the aim of gathering £20m to invest in research into the biology of invasive lobular breast cancer.
