Kuwait Ramps Up Green Energy Drive with Smart Meters
KUWAIT CITY, May 12: Kuwait's Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy has successfully completed the installation of smart electricity meters in approximately 95% of schools and mosques across the country, according to informed sources within the ministry. The remaining installations are expected to be finalized soon. Sources explained that the smart meters enable the ministry to remotely control and cut off power supply to schools after class hours and to mosques following prayer times—an initiative aimed at curbing unnecessary electricity consumption. The move reflects the commitment of Minister Dr. Subaih Al-Mukhaizeem and senior officials to promoting energy efficiency, particularly during peak demand periods. In a separate development, Undersecretary Dr. Adel Al-Zamel took part in the opening session of the Kuwait Sustainable Energy Conference, held under the theme 'High-Level Dialogue on Regional Policies: Collaborative Pathways for Renewable Energy Solutions and Gateways for Hydrogen Trade.' The session highlighted Kuwait's national priorities in renewable energy development and hydrogen utilization. Attendees reviewed the recently signed agreement with China's State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) to advance the Shagaya and Abdaliya renewable energy projects, which aim to generate over 3,000 megawatts of electricity. Dr. Al-Zamel stated that Kuwait's renewable energy capacity is projected to reach 4,800 megawatts by 2029, leveraging various technologies. He emphasized that the region's transition to clean energy must support both economic growth and national interests. He identified green and blue hydrogen development as key opportunities, pointing to the region's abundant renewable and hydrocarbon resources as strategic assets in the energy transformation process.

Kuwait Cracks Down on Illegal Crypto Mining to Protect National Grid
Kuwaiti authorities are cracking down on illegal crypto mining, with over 60 individuals now under investigation, as part of a sweeping campaign to root out unlicensed operations. The country's Public Prosecution confirmed the investigations are ongoing and warned that more suspects could be identified in the coming weeks. The 'security operation,' carried out last Friday, targeted residential properties across the country suspected of hosting mining rigs, according to local media. The operation was coordinated by top officials, including Acting Prime Minister Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousef and Minister of Electricity Dr. Subaih Al-Mukhaizeem. The government said it aims to curb unauthorized power usage that has strained the national grid and led to blackouts in some areas. The Ministry of Electricity has begun disconnecting power from mining-linked properties. Reconnection will only be permitted with clearance from the Ministry of Interior. Officials are also conducting follow-up sweeps in various neighborhoods. Kuwait has enforced an 'absolute ban on all virtual asset/cryptocurrency mining activities' under a directive from its anti-money laundering committee that was backed by regulators including the National Bank of Kuwait.

Kuwait: Over 60 under investigation for illegal crypto mining
KUWAIT CITY - Kuwait's Public Prosecution continues to investigate approximately 60 individuals involved in illicit cryptocurrency mining activities, with numbers expected to rise. The Cabinet has commended the outcomes of an extensive security operation conducted last Friday, overseen by Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousef, Minister of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy Dr. Subaih Al-Mukhaizeem, Minister of State for Communications Affairs Omar Al-Omar, and Minister of State for Municipal Affairs and Minister of State for Housing Affairs Abdullatif Al-Mishari. This campaign targeted numerous residences engaged in unauthorized cryptocurrency mining. The Cabinet emphasized that the operation is part of ongoing governmental efforts to combat unlawful activities, safeguard the electricity grid from illegal usage, and ensure public safety. Such unauthorized mining exploits electrical resources, leading to increased grid loads, power outages, and disruptions in residential, commercial, and service areas. The Public Prosecution, through the Commercial Affairs Prosecution, has ordered the continued detention of several suspects, including property owners who rented out their homes for mining purposes. Others have been released on bail of 500 Kuwaiti dinars. Investigators have confronted defendants with evidence of substantial deposits in their accounts, some amounting to 3,000–4,000 dinars daily, originating from unidentified sources. While charged with undermining national interests and engaging in unlicensed activities, many defendants have denied the allegations after being presented with criminal investigation reports linking them to the incidents and seized equipment. Sources informed Al-Rai that operations to identify cryptocurrency mining sites are ongoing, in coordination with relevant authorities. Searches are being conducted in areas including Wafra, Sabah Al-Ahmad, and Mutlaa, with no region excluded, even those in the interior. The Ministry of Electricity is disconnecting power to properties involved in mining activities, with reconnection contingent upon approval from the Ministry of Interior. Additionally, the Ministry of Electricity, in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior, is enforcing penalties for cryptocurrency mining activities based on regulations that impose an "absolute ban on all virtual asset/currency mining activities." This ban was issued by the National Committee for Combating Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing, along with other relevant authorities such as the Central Bank, the Ministry of Commerce, and the Capital Markets Authority.
