Ghost of Yotei developers detail new features of the game
Your web browser is no longer supported. To improve your experience update it here BREAKING Wrestling icon Hulk Hogan dead at 71 I feel it's been the right amount of time between games, with the passionate fans of Ghost of Tsushima more than ready to dive back into this immersive world. But how do you carry it forward? How do you create something new? Ghost of Tsushima was such an epic stand-alone title. So Ghost of Yotei has a big task ahead. Ghost of Yotei is releasing on October 2. (PlayStation) As I sat down with Sucker Punch Productions Jason Connell and Nate Fox, it was the first question I asked. How do we carry this game forward for a true, epic sequel? "We asked almost the exact same questions of ourselves," Connell told "That's the magic judo of making video games. And, for us, it was making sure we carry forward that like lethal precision in the combat, that samurai cinema film inspired sort of vibe, you know. "Respecting the quiet moments, but making sure there's sort of a visceral feeling to all with an awesome story pulling it together," he said. Players will wield deadly weapons as Atsu. (PlayStation) Ghost of Yotei follows the journey of Atsu, a wandering samurai hellbent on vengeance. Set 329 years after the first game, the team at Sucker Punch Productions is pushing open-world exploration to the next level, granting players "unparalleled freedom to discover Ezo". The game heavily leans into its cinematic inspirations, introducing new "director modes" for players. Beyond the returning Akira Kurosawa mode, which celebrates earlier samurai films, two new modes expand the experience, including one that gets players up close and personal with enemies. The setting incorporates "Wild West film tropes" with classic samurai movie influences, creating a unique blend that evokes a sense of being on the "edge of, the sort of the civilised world where anything could happen", Connell said. The game features a large and expansive open world set in Ezo, Japan. (PlayStation) Sucker Punch emphasised their collaborative approach with advisors, building upon the "epic training wheels called Tsushima". These advisors help ensure authenticity and accuracy. "Advisors really help us understand everything from our writing style to our historical, and like, geographical locations that we want to depict… Each of them understand we're making a piece of entertainment," Connell said. Connell and Fox stressed that their goal is not a "stone for stone sort of recreation", but rather to "capture the feeling of a place with enough authenticity and accuracy that really transports people". Ghost of Yotei is coming to PlayStation 5 on October 2. More from our interview with Jason Connell and Nate Fox in the player above. Tech Technology PlayStation Playstation 5 Video Games CONTACT US

Ghost of Yotei becomes first open-world game to add Lo-fi mode for immersive exploration
Ghost of Yotei has revealed a new Lo-fi mode during its State of Play presentation, expanding on its Kurosawa Mode from Ghost of Tsushima while adding fresh creative features. Kurosawa Mode returns, transforming the experience with monochromatic visuals in honour of the filmmaker, but Sucker Punch Productions has introduced two additional modes for the sequel. Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike is honoured with Miiko Mode, which brings the camera closer during combat and enhances blood and mud effects, intensifying the experience. 'Toggling Miiko Mode on brings the camera closer during combat to ratchet up the intensity.' The third mode, honouring Cowboy Bebop director Shinichirō Watanabe, introduces Lo-fi music to the game. 'While playing with this unique mode active, Lo-fi music, including new tracks made by Watanabe himself, will complement our every action as we stroll through the lands of Ezo.' The Lo-fi mode pairs new tracks with exploration, enhancing the game's sense of atmosphere while maintaining Ghost of Tsushima's prioritisation of environmental design and calm moments within its world. Ghost of Yotei appears set to continue the tradition of providing the sense of zen fans felt exploring in Ghost of Tsushima, creating a deeply immersive experience for players in its recreation of 1200s Japan.

Ghost of Yotei gameplay revealed, coming to PS5 on October 2: Watch it here
Sony has officially revealed Ghost of Yotei, a new samurai action-adventure game exclusive to the PlayStation 5. The game will launch worldwide on October 2, and is being developed by Sucker Punch Productions, the team behind the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima. This standalone sequel brings a new character, story, and setting, but retains the cinematic combat and open-world gameplay fans loved in the original. During a dedicated showcase event, Sony gave a first look at the upcoming title's gameplay, visuals, and story direction. What's the game about? Ghost of Yotei follows Atsu, a ronin (a samurai without a master) who sets out on a mission to hunt down six outlaws responsible for her family's death. The story draws inspiration from Japanese folklore, especially the legend of the onryo, a vengeful spirit — a role Atsu grows into as the plot unfolds. Set in Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido) during the year 1603, the game offers an open-world experience that encourages exploration at your own pace. Players will be able to focus on different gameplay aspects depending on what they enjoy most, whether that's stealth, combat, or story progression. Key features and visual styles Combat in Ghost of Yotei is designed to feel like a classic samurai film. The developers say the goal is to replicate the tension and precision of swordfighting, supported by rich visuals and atmospheric environments. This time, you'll also have a wolf companion that fights alongside you. The game includes multiple cinematic visual modes: Kurosawa Mode: Black-and-white filter inspired by legendary filmmaker Akira Kurosawa. Miike Mode: Intense, close-up, and bloody action, named after director Takashi Miike. Watanabe Mode: A laid-back, lo-fi look inspired by Shinichirō Watanabe, known for Samurai Champloo. There's also an expanded photo mode, giving players tools to capture and share the game's detailed environments and action sequences. Special edition PS5 and limited accessories Alongside the game, Sony will launch a limited-edition PS5 console and accessories themed around Ghost of Yotei. Details on pricing and availability are expected closer to the launch date. Ghost of Yotei: Gameplay

Ghost Of Yotei's Gameplay Trailer: This sequel might have outdone its predecessor in one swift blow. Watch
It's tough to cement yourself as a proper franchise in the gaming world because, in all honesty, there are already too many of those. Another formidable task to take on is making an open-world game, and that too is difficult for the same reasons. Competing with legendary franchises like GTA, God of War, and Far Cry might be something game developers would duck from, but the people over at Sucker Punch Productions are definitely not running away from a fight. They have just released the gameplay trailer for their upcoming title Ghost Of Yotei, and it looks like the game might break the records held by the beloved and moving Ghost Of Tsushima. The developers provide an insight into the whole story behind the game while describing all the different features that have been made available for the users. The protagonist of the story is a woman named Atsu, who is returning to her hometown after 16 years in order to take revenge for her family's death. The developers have pulled from Japanese myths and legends, and Atsu is believed to be an onryō. According to Japanese folklore, an onryō is a spirit that is driven by wrath and thirst for revenge. As Atsu moves forward in her journey, her ghost legend will only grow, as will the bounty on her head, inviting more challenging foes as the game proceeds. ALSO READ: 007 First Light announcement trailer: James Bond is a bullet looking for a target in the new game, watch In order to level up her prowess as a fighter, the players will need to find certain clues to hidden areas of the game. They can also stumble upon secret locations titled 'Altars of Reflection', which will inspire Atsu and will give the players the ability to choose a new skill. The developers claim to have made a world that can suit everyone's playing style like a perfect glove. The players will be able to choose whether they want to explore the world, focus on the main story, or complete other side quests. This does beg the question if players will be able to level up Atsu before getting very far in the main storyline or maybe before even starting it. The weapon arsenal available is wide and varied, including katanas, spears, kusarigama, odachi, and dual swords. Their weapons have a personality of their own, as different weapons will be effective in particular situations, and all weapons will have their own skill tree to climb. In her pursuit of the Yotei Six, the group of mercenaries that killed her family, Atsu can act as a bounty hunter, investigator or just a straight-up punisher. The developers say that the entire experience will be slow, and they will not be rushing the players through anything; in fact, they encourage the players to go exploring and take the game forward one discovery at a time. The game will be coming out on PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025.
