Sunderland have completed the signing of Granit Xhaka from Bayer Leverkusen on a three-year contract. The 32-year-old midfielder arrives on Wearside having spent two years with Leverkusen and was part of their impressive 2023-24 season, where they were crowned Bundesliga champions and lifted the DFB-Pokal. Sunderland have completed the signing of Granit Xhaka from Bayer Leverkusen. The Athletic reported on Monday that Sunderland had agreed a fee worth up to €20million (£13.4m; $23.3m) with Leverkusen, who had previously been told by the midfielder that he only wants to join the Premier League club. Xhaka agreed personal terms with the newly-promoted club after informing Leverkusen that he only wanted to join Sunderland, having had the option to stay in Germany or move elsewhere, including to Saudi Arabia. The Switzerland captain is Sunderland's sixth new arrival of the summer, having already secured the signings of left-back Reinildo Mandava, central midfielders Habib Diarra and Noah Sadiki and wingers Simon Adringa and Chemsdine Talbi. French midfielder Enzo Le Fee has also joined the club on a permanent basis after joining on loan from Roma in January. On the outgoings front, Jobe Bellingham joined Borussia Dortmund for £30m in June, while Tommy Watson moved to Brighton for £10m in a deal that was agreed earlier this year. Xhaka returns to the Premier League two years after leaving Arsenal to sign for Leverkusen. He spent seven seasons in north London, having a brief spell as captain, and winning the FA Cup twice while scoring 23 goals in 297 appearances.
