Congress protests arrest of nuns in Chhattisgarh and alleges violation of rights

Thiruvananthapuram: KPCC President Sunny Joseph has urged the Governor to inform the central govt about the public outcry in Kerala against the BJP govt's action of arresting and jailing two Malayali nuns in Chhattisgarh. He was speaking during a protest march led by the KPCC to Raj Bhavan, opposing the arrest of the nuns and the unconstitutional actions of the BJP regime. The Chhattisgarh govt filed false charges against the nuns, altering the FIR to deny them bail by adding non-existent sections. The BJP's oppressive rule challenges the rule of law, and the arrest of the nuns is unconstitutional. It is unfortunate that the chief minister of Chhattisgarh is justifying it. The BJP govt's actions, which violate and deny the constitutional and fundamental rights guaranteed to citizens, are shameful. Bajrang Dal activists threatened and abused the nuns while the police remained mute spectators, Sunny Joseph said. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, along with INDIA bloc MPs, raised strong protests in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. A group of UDF MPs visited the nuns in jail and demanded the Chhattisgarh govt withdraw the false case, but they refused. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like When Knee Pain Hits, Start Eating These Foods, and Feel Your Pain Go Away (It's Genius) Read More Undo The Congress will continue to raise strong protests nationwide, Sunny Joseph added. Opposition Leader V D Satheesan urged that Kerala's protest against the jailing of nuns should be conveyed to the prime minister and the Chhattisgarh govt by the chief minister without further delay. The Chhattisgarh govt unjustly jailed nuns engaged in charitable work for the common people. The Sangh Parivar challenges religious freedom, and intolerance is their hallmark. They attempt to maintain power by inciting divisions among people for political gain. The events in Chhattisgarh are the greatest example of what happens to religious minorities and common people when Congress is out of power. Our country has become a place where Christians are denied religious and prayer freedom, damaging India's international image, Satheesan added. Under BJP rule, atrocities against Christians have increased in the country. A group of UDF MPs and MLAs, along with former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel, visited the nuns. The Congress will continue its protest until the nuns are granted bail, the opposition leader clarified.

Keralite nuns' arrest: KPCC takes out protest march to Raj Bhavan

The Governor should convey to the Centre about the public outrage in Kerala over the arrest and imprisonment of two Keralite nuns by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Chhattisgarh, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president and MLA Sunny Joseph said. Addressing a march organised by the KPCC to Raj Bhavan on Wednesday to protest against the arrest and the unconstitutional actions of the BJP administration in Chhattisgarh, Mr. Joseph pointed out that the Chhattisgarh government had foisted false charges against the nuns and had manipulated the first information report (FIR) by adding non-existent legal clauses, thus denying them bail. He said that the BJP was challenging the rule of law and it was shameful that the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh was justifying its action against the nuns, which was a violation of the civil rights guaranteed by the Constitution. Inaugurating the march, the Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan said the Kerala Chief Minister should not waste any time in informing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Chhattisgarh Chief Minister the State's strong protest against the unfounded action against the nuns . He said the Chhattisgarh government had been unfair in imprisoning the nuns who were engaged in humanitarian work. The Sangh Parivar's hallmark was intolerance. Instigating people and communities to fight against each other over religious freedom and rights was how the BJP was playing the people of Kerala, Mr. Satheesan said. An example He said the incident in Chhattisgarh was a stark example of the fate that awaited the minorities and the marginalised wherever the Congress was out of power The incident has tarnished the nation's secular image on the international front, he pointed out. Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala spoke about the anxiety and insecurities faced by the religious minorities in the country today. The arrest of the nuns who were engaged in humanitarian activities amongst the poor and marginalised in Chhattisgarh was a joint attempt by the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to unleash a communal riot, he said. Mr. Modi, who makes a song and dance about greeting Christians on the occasion of Christmas, has been silent about the atrocities that were being committed against the Christians by the BJP's feeder organisations, Mr. Chennithala added. AICC general secretary Deepa Dasmunshi, KPCC working president P.C. Vishnunath, acting president of Thiruvananthapuram DCC N. Sakthan and senior Congress leaders M.M. Hassan, V.M. Sudheeran, K. Muraleedharan, among others, spoke

Kannur DCC general secretary resigns after audio leak

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph on Tuesday accepted the resignation of District Congress Committee general secretary and former Farmers' Congress State president K.C. Vijayan following the surfacing of an audio clip alleging financial fraud and misuse of identity documents by a Youth Congress leader. In a release, Mr. Joseph confirmed that Mr. Vijayan's resignation had been accepted. Mr. Vijayan's audio message, reportedly posted in a WhatsApp group of the Sreekandapuram Block Congress leaders and later circulated in the media, has triggered a fresh row for both the Congress and the Youth Congress. In the recording, Mr. Vijayan is purportedly heard accusing Youth Congress leaders of collecting funds in the name of constructing houses for Wayanad landslide victims and misappropriating the money. However, soon after the clip went public, Youth Congress State secretary Robert Vellamvelly came out with a rebuttal, laced with sarcasm. He mocked Mr. Vijayan for having 'Perumthachan complex' and 'great intelligence to inform people that he is alive.'

‘Congress will become dead stock': ‘Leaked' chat featuring Kerala party leader costs him his post

A 'leaked' conversation in which a Congress leader purportedly predicts a setback to his own party in next year's assembly election has left the party red in the face, resulting in the leader stepping down from his position. Congress Thiruvananthapuram district committee president Palod Ravi had to step down after an audio purportedly had him saying that the Congress would be 'dead stock' after the assembly polls. The person in the audio says: 'you see what BJP is going to do in 60 assembly constituencies. They will bag votes after pumping money as they had done in the Parliament elections. The Marxists Party will continue in power. This is what is going to happen and Congress will become a dead stock after the elections'. The voice goes on to say: 'Those in the Muslim community will go to the Communist party and other parties. Men stated to be Congress will also go to BJP. Congress has no workers who can approach the people. We have only ten per cent of workers who can go to the people and work among them,'' he said'. After the leak, Congress state president Sunny Joseph said the issue 'is serious'. 'He has not denied it. The party is consulting with the AICC leaders and there would be appropriate action,' he said. The party also expelled a block level leader, identified as A Jaleel, for allegedly leaking the recorded conversation to the media. Kerala is due to hold assembly elections next year.

Children should not be made to perform rituals like ‘guru puja,' says KPCC president

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Sunny Joseph has come out strongly against the controversial 'guru puja' event involving schoolchildren, stating that such practices are inappropriate and children should never be forced into them. Responding to media queries in Kasaragod on Monday, Mr. Joseph said, 'Teachers should indeed be respected but not in this manner. Children should not be compelled to perform acts like foot worship.' His remarks come amid growing criticism of the incident at Bandudka Saraswathi Vidyalayam and others schools in Kasaragod and Kannur where students were made to perform 'padapuja' of teachers on Vyasa Jayanti last Thursday. When asked about senior Congress leader P.J. Kurien's statement that the Youth Congress and the Kerala Students' Union (KSU) were not active enough, Mr. Joseph refrained from outright dismissal, saying Mr. Kurien's intention was to 'strengthen the organisation'. He added that both the Youth Congress and the KSU were actively involved in protests, even in the face of police action. 'Even amidst police violence, their protest programmes remain strong. Senior leaders want these youth organisations to become stronger and there is nothing wrong with that,' he said. Mr. Joseph declined to comment on the alleged discontent within the party over a few statements made by Shashi Tharoor, MP, recently.
