Edward Zakrzewski: Execution of man who killed his wife and children sets new state record

A man who murdered his wife and two children with a machete has become the ninth person to be executed in Florida this year. Edward Zakrzewski's death sets a new annual record for the state - and two more are scheduled this month. The 60-year-old was pronounced dead on Thursday after being given a three-drug injection: a sedative, a paralytic and a drug that stops the heart. Zakrzewski had been on Death Row since 1994, when he was convicted of murdering his wife and two children, aged seven and five. He had told others he would kill them rather than let his wife, Sylvia, divorce him. She was attacked first with a crowbar and strangled with a rope, while the children were hacked to death with the machete. Sylvia was also attacked with the machete when Zakrzewski thought she was still alive, according to court testimony. Zakrzewski's final bid to delay the execution was thrown out on Wednesday. Officials at Florida State Prison said he had a final meal of fried pork chops, root beer and ice cream. His final words were: "I want to thank the good people of the Sunshine State for killing me in the most cold, calculated, clean, humane, efficient way possible. I have no complaint." Opponents of the execution argued it shouldn't take place as the original 7-5 jury split in favour of killing him wouldn't be enough under current laws. Florida's previous record since capital punishment was restored in 1976 was eight executions back in 2014. No other state has killed more people this year - and two more are set to take place in Florida on 19 and 28 August. Texas and South Carolina are second, with four executions each. A total of 27 men have been put to death in the US so far in 2025.

Hulk Hogan's heartbroken wife tearfully embraces loved ones as she's seen for the first time at Florida home where WWE icon suffered fatal cardiac arrest

In a gut-wrenching first sighting, Hulk Hogan 's heartbroken widow, Sky Daily, was seen visibly grief-stricken outside the home where the WWE legend died suddenly from cardiac arrest hours prior, as she clung to her loved ones for support. The following day, Sky was seen with her hand over her heart, pacing outside a friend's home while speaking on the phone and gently gesturing with her hands, as revealed in these exclusive photos. At one point, as if trying to put her grief into words, she paused and raised her hand to her chest, appearing to reflect on the love she shared with her late husband, whom she quietly married just two years ago. Although her grief was palpable, the 46-year-old widow was immaculately dressed in black leggings, a T-shirt dedicated to country music legend Morgan Wallen and an orange 'Sunshine State' baseball cap that she's been photographed in before. Sky was spotted at a friend's $3.2million six-bedroom home close to the waterfront in Clearwater Beach, less than two miles from the mansion she shared with Hulk, who died aged 71. She drove there in a white Audi RS7 from the $9million home where Hulk collapsed on Thursday morning before being taken by paramedics to hospital where he was declared dead. The 29-year-old widow appeared grief stricken with her tear streaked, swollen face and usually straight, blonde hair thrown up into a messy bun the day before as her loved ones arrived to comfort her The following morning, Sky was seen pacing outside her friend's home with her hand on heart as she spoke on the phone, as captured in exclusive photos The legend's third wife then went inside the pal's place before returning to the beachfront mansion, where she accepted a massive bouquet of flowers being delivered as she arrived. Her physical appearance, although solemn, was in contrast to the previous evening when she opened the door to friends who consoled her for the terrible loss. With her long blonde locks scraped back and wearing no make-up, she looked down and appeared to be battling tears as the pair hugged and held her close. It was a poignantly heartbreaking moment just hours after she'd lost the man who made such an impact on his sport, the world of celebrity – and lately politics with his support of President Donald Trump. Sky was exclusively photographed by shortly amid her posting a heart-rending tribute, admitting: 'I wasn't ready for this… and my heart is in pieces. 'He had been dealing with some health issues, but I truly believed we would overcome them. I had so much faith in his strength. I though we still had more time. A sizable police presence was seen surrounding the home to deter the media from coming to close as the family deals with Hogan's sudden passing On Friday morning, Sky spoke on the phone as she paced back and forth outside of her friend's $3.2million six-bedroom home, dressed in black leggings, a T-shirt dedicated to country music legend Morgan Wallen and an orange 'Sunshine State' baseball cap that she's been photographed in before 'The loss is sudden and impossible to process. To the world, he was a legend. But to me, he was my Terry. The man I loved. My partner. My heart. 'Hulk loved his fans so much and despite his growing physical discomfort, he did everything he could to show up, sign autographs, take photos, and connect with the people who supported him through it all. You meant everything to him.' She continued: 'He was a believer in Christ and I take comfort knowing his soul is at peace and he's been welcomed home.' Sky was Hogan's third wife, marrying the former wrestler in 2023 following his divorces from ex-wives Linda Hogan and Jennifer McDaniel in 2009 and 2021 respectively. Hogan is also survived by his two children, Brooke, 36, and Nick, 34, whom he shared with his first wife Linda, as well as two grandchildren. The wrestling icon's shock death comes just weeks after Sky denied rumors he was on his deathbed in a coma - and claimed his heart was 'strong' after he underwent a routine neck surgery. In the post, Sky wrote how she believed Hogan would overcome his health problems and that the sudden loss was 'impossible to process' Hogan knew he was suffering from health problems including a weak heart and shortness of breath in the weeks before his passing on Thursday, an insider said His representative said in a statement last month: 'He's had problems with his back for years but there's no emergency.' A source also revealed to last month that Hogan was trying to work his way back to '100 percent' after neck and back operations. 'Hulk has a body ravaged by wrestling, his body is the body of a 140-year-old man with all the bumps and bruises through the years, and his recent neck and back surgeries have been harder to come back from,' a source close to Hogan said. Linda, who married Hogan in 1983, shared her own touching message for the athlete and entertained just days before his death. In her final Instagram post before Hogan's passing, Linda shared a photo of herself and the 'Hulkster' from the 1980s, which she captioned: 'The good old days !' Her post came just months after Hogan's very public fallout with Linda and their daughter Brooke. Sky, who married the wrestler in 2023, denied rumors Hogan was on his deathbed weeks ago He was involved in a bitter family spat with ex-wife Linda and daughter Brooke back in March In an astonishing video on social media shared back in March, Linda first accused her former husband of being a 'complete liar' and 'sex addict'. She also claimed their family is 'in the worst mess' after Brooke cut both parents out of her life, before hitting back at her mom by alleging that her dad was not the only reason behind the shocking family divide, claiming she was 'verbally and mentally abused' during her childhood. 'Sadly, it would frequently turn physical. And sometimes it's not by the person you would assume, abuse comes in all shapes and sizes,' Brooke alleged. After Brooke's stunning response, Linda then took a dramatic U-turn by defending Hogan and branding her daughter a 'narcissist.'

DeSantis-appointed US senator scores major endorsement ahead of 2026 special election: 'Tremendous job'

President Donald Trump endorsed U.S. Sen. Ashley Moody for election. Earlier this year, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis installed Moody in the seat vacated by Marco Rubio, who departed the Senate to serve as President Donald Trump's Secretary of State. In a Thursday post on Truth Social, the president declared that Moody has his "Complete and Total Endorsement," asserting, "SHE WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN!" Moody thanked Trump for his support. "Thank you, President @realDonaldTrump! I'm incredibly honored by your support and look forward to our continued work together to make this a SAFER and STRONGER nation," Moody said in a post on X. Moody, like the vast majority of her Senate and House GOP colleagues, voted to pass the Trump-backed One Big Beautiful Bill Act earlier this month. Rubio, who won re-election to the Senate in 2022, departed office well before his term was slated to conclude in early 2029. A special election will be held next year to allow Floridians to decide who will represent them for the remainder of the term. Prior to joining the U.S. Senate, Moody served as the Sunshine State's attorney general.
