Aaron Rodgers to sign with Pittsburgh Steelers ahead of minicamp, per NFL insiders

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (WTAJ) — Aaron Rodgers is trading green for gold this offseason. The 20-year veteran, four-time NFL MVP and longtime face of the Green Bay Packers, who spent the last two seasons with the New York Jets, is set to join the Pittsburgh Steelers ahead of next week's mandatory minicamp, according to multiple reports. Before his time in New York, Rodgers was previously one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL with Green Bay. With the Packers, Rodgers won Super Bowl XLV back in 2011 against the Steelers. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported that Rodgers informed the team he'll fly to Pittsburgh on Friday and sign before minicamp. ESPN's Adam Schefter also confirmed the move, stating Rodgers plans to participate in team activities next week. Rodgers, 41, is expected to begin his 21st NFL season wearing the Black and Gold, marking one of the most high-profile quarterback additions to the Steelers since signing Russell Wilson in the 2024 season. Pittsburgh was limited on its quarterback options at this point after Justin Fields signed with Rodgers' previous team and Russell Wilson inked a deal with the New York Giants. While the Steelers have seen uncertainty at quarterback since Ben Roethlisberger's retirement after the 2021-2022 season, the addition of a seasoned and decorated veteran like Rodgers could signal a new chapter of stability and championship aspirations in Pittsburgh. Packers and new Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers set for prime time clash in 2025

Packers and new Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers set for prime time clash in 2025 Well, one game on the Green Bay Packers' 2025 schedule just got a lot more interesting. With reports that Aaron Rodgers is signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Packers are now scheduled to face their former quarterback in 2025. The Packers and Steelers will face off on Sunday, October 26, in Week 8 of the upcoming season, in primetime on Sunday Night Football. The highly anticipated matchup draws comparisons to when Brett Favre signed with the Minnesota Vikings and faced Green Bay for the first time in 2009. The Vikings defeated the Packers 30–23, with Favre throwing for 271 yards and three touchdowns. Fortunately for the Packers, Rodgers is not playing for a divisional rival—though his new team and former team do have some history. Green Bay and Pittsburgh faced off in Super Bowl XLV, where the Packers captured their fourth Super Bowl title in franchise history. Rodgers was named Super Bowl MVP after throwing for 304 yards and three touchdowns. It would be his only Super Bowl appearance in 18 seasons in Green Bay. The idea of Rodgers joining Pittsburgh had been floated around for most of the offseason. After a disappointing two years with the New York Jets, Rodgers was released and—rather than retiring—will continue his career at age 41 with an organization that has a long history of winning. He joins a Steelers team that reached the playoffs in 2024 with Justin Fields and Russell Wilson as starting quarterbacks. In typical Pittsburgh fashion, defense was their calling card, finishing tied for first in takeaways and top 10 in scoring defense. With Rodgers and a new ultra-talented wide receiver in the picture, the offense should be much improved. In March, the Steelers sent two picks to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for DK Metcalf, who had previously been linked to the Packers. Rodgers and Metcalf could be a lethal combination. Rodgers thrives when he has a legitimate number-one option, and Metcalf is a physical specimen who has posted at least 900 receiving yards and five touchdowns in each of his six NFL seasons. If both are healthy in Week 8, that will be a key matchup to watch. We're still a long way from the Packers facing off against Rodgers, but it's exciting to think about nonetheless. This is almost déjà vu for Green Bay, though the circumstances are slightly different. Still, it's going to be must-see TV when Rodgers faces his former team—potentially for the only time in his Hall of Fame career. Of course, the two teams could meet again in this year's Super Bowl, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Aaron Rodgers signing 1-year contract with Steelers, reports say

Aaron Rodgers signing 1-year contract with Steelers, reports say originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia Aaron Rodgers has found his new home — finally. The former New York Jets quarterback plans to sign a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers after months of speculation about his future, according to multiple reports on Thursday. Advertisement Rodgers reportedly plans to fly to Pittsburgh this week and participate in the Steelers' mandatory minicamp next week. Pittsburgh has had an active offseason, and this only makes things more interesting. The Steelers acquired star receiver DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks in a trade earlier in the offseason, a move that will certainly benefit Rodgers. Then, they sent wide receiver George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys for draft picks. The rest of the roster has been filled out in the draft, and head coach Mike Tomlin always has his team in contention. The Steelers went 10-7 last season, making the playoffs and losing in the wild card round for the fourth time in five years. Advertisement Rodgers' statistics last season with the Jets ended up looking respectable — 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, 11 interceptions — but he has clearly lost his superstar form. The four-time MVP is 41 years old, making him the oldest quarterback in the league. Rodgers' greatest moment came in February 2011, when his first team (Green Bay Packers) defeated his newest team (Steelers) to win Super Bowl XLV. The Steelers' hope is that his presence will be an upgrade from last year, where Russell Wilson and Justin Fields split the starting quarterback role. Wilson and Fields are now in New York with the Giants and Jets, respectively. Pittsburgh's quarterback room now features Rodgers, free-agent signings Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson and sixth-round rookie Will Howard.

Packers to transition to new CEO/president Ed Policy at annual shareholders meeting

Packers to transition to new CEO/president Ed Policy at annual shareholders meeting The Green Bay Packers will formally transition from Mark Murphy to Ed Policy as the team's CEO and president during the annual shareholders meeting, which is set for Friday, July 25 inside Lambeau Field. The mandatory retirement age of 70 arrives for Murphy on July 13. He has served as CEO and president of the Packers since Jan. 28, 2008. "I look forward to Ed taking over leadership of the Packers. He's been a tremendous asset to the organization and I'm confident he will be an excellent steward in the role," Murphy said in a press release. Over Murphy's 17 years in charge, the Packers successfully transitioned from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers, won Super Bowl XLV and built up the area around Lambeau Field now known as "Titletown." Green Bay made 12 playoff appearances, and Murphy oversaw only two sets of coaches/general managers -- Mike McCarthy and Ted Thompson, and Matt LaFleur and Brian Gutekunst. Policy, the son of former San Francisco 49ers and Cleveland Browns president Carmen Policy, has been with the Packers since 2012. He has been the team's chief operating officer since January of 2018. The Packers announced him as the successor to Murphy last summer, and he's been transitioning into the top job over the last year. Policy is 54 years old. The meeting will also include a vote on three candidates for the Packers Board of Directors. The Packers open training camp with a practice on Wednesday, July 23. The team is expected to hold a training camp practice on the same day as the shareholders meeting.

Aaron Rodgers open to retiring as member of Packers if the team asks

Aaron Rodgers open to retiring as member of Packers if the team asks Quarterback Aaron Rodgers said he doesn't completely understand the idea of retiring with one team but is open to the idea if the Green Bay Packers ask him when he's done playing pro football. In the past, retiring players have returned to officially retire as a member of that team. For example, long-time kicker Mason Crosby retired as a member of the Packers in March. While it doesn't sound like Rodgers -- who played 18 seasons in Green Bay -- would open the dialogue, he's willing to entertain the idea if the Packers ask. "I'm not sure yet. If they approached me, I probably would," Rodgers said, via a live taping of the YNK Podcast in Austin, Texas. Rodgers, 41, is currently a free agent, although it is widely believed he'll play the 2025 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers -- so any retirement from the game might be at least another year off. The future Pro Football Hall of Famer played the last two seasons with the New York Jets, who completed a trade for Rodgers from the Packers in 2023. Rodgers, who is from California, mentioned growing up as a San Francisco 49ers fan and understanding how "cool" it was to see legendary players like Jerry Rice come back to the team to retire. But he also knows a symbolic retirement with the Packers isn't exactly required -- he'll eventually go into the team's Hall of Fame and could have his No. 12 retired, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame awaits once he's retired for five years. And a one-day celebration of his accomplishments with the Packers and in football won't change how he feels about the Packers. "There's a lot of love for me and how I feel about the team," Rodgers said. Rodgers, a 2005 first-round pick of the Packers, made 10 Pro Bowls and was named the NFL's MVP four times while in Green Bay. He also led the Packers to a win in Super Bowl XLV and was named to the NFL's 2010s All-Decade Team. His 18 seasons and 475 passing touchdowns with the Packers are both team records.
