Reigning Australian Supercars champion to run NASCAR Cup race at Chicago for Kaulig Racing

Reigning Australian Supercars champion Will Brown will return to NASCAR to compete for Kaulig Racing in the July 6 Chicago Street Race Cup event, the team announced Tuesday. Brown will drive the No. 13 for Kaulig Racing at Chicago and be a teammate to AJ Allmendinger and Ty Dillon. 'After watching SVG (Shane van Gisbergen) win the 2023 Chicago NASCAR race and getting to drive myself at Sonoma last year, I've been really keen to have a go at the Grant Park 165,' said Brown in a statement from the team. 'The Supercars calendar aligned this year to give me time to get over to Charlotte early to prepare and give the race a crack! I have watched Kaulig Racing closely this season and I'm really excited to get behind the wheel of the MobileX and Shaw and Partners Financial Services No. 13!' Dustin Long, Brown is coming off a 2024 season that saw him win the Supercars title in Australia, scoring five wins and 19 podium finishes, the first time in 40 years that a driver had earned a podium in every round in that series. The 26-year-old Australian made his Cup debut last year at Sonoma, driving a third entry for Richard Childress Racing. He finished 31st.

Supercars great Scott McLaughlin crashes out of Indy 500 in warm-up lap

Scott McLaughlin's Indianapolis 500 is over without completing a competitive lap after the Team Penske driver lost control and crashed on the warm-up lap. The Pennzoil Chevy driver was weaving on the approach to Turn 1 when the car spun from beneath him. McLaughlin collided with the inside wall and wrecked the car, causing significant damage to the left front suspension. Disgusted with himself, the former Supercars champion banged angrily on the steering wheel before climbing from his car After extricating himself from the car, the distraught driver knelt on the ground with his head in his hands before being taken to the trackside medical centre, where he was cleared of any injury. 'I really have no idea what happened,' said New Zealand-born McLaughlin. 'I'm just really upset for my team. They built me a fantastic car again. I'm really sorry to my sponsors, my fans, my family. I don't know what happened. 'I'm still… I can't believe we're out of the race. I just had so much hope today. Yeah, it's by far, the worst moment of my life. 'I know it's probably dramatic and whatever, but I put so much into this race, everyone does, and I didn't even get to see the green flag.' Moments after McLaughlin crashed, compatriot Scott Dixon's car began to smoke with a rear brake fire. However, he was able to continue without much issue. The race eventually started but was quickly brought under control of the safety car when Marco Andretti got rear-ended by Jack Harvey into Turn 1. Meyer Shank Racing's Marcus Armstrong narrowly avoided collecting the Andretti Global car, escaping serious damage despite what appeared to be light contact. The yellow flew on Lap 18 after a dusting of rain. At the time, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing's Takuma Sato led McLaren's Pato O'Ward and Meyer Shank Racing standout Felix Rosenqvist. Pole position winner Robert Shwartzman fell to fourth after a frantic start to the race, punctuated by Sato and O'Ward trading places.

'By far the worst moment of my life;' Scott McLaughlin crashes out of Indianapolis 500 before it even begins

The Indianapolis 500 was over for Scott McLaughlin before it even began. McLaughlin crashed out of the race on the pace laps as he was warming up his tires. McLaughlin's car skidded across the frontstretch on the cold track and smashed into the inside wall before Turn 1. His car eventually came to rest in the infield with a broken front wing and suspension. "Just really upset for my team, they built me a fantastic car again." He then said it was the worst moment of his life. "By far the worst moment of my life. I know it's probably dramatic, everyone's — whatever, but I put so much into this race, everyone does, and just didn't even get to see the green flag." The former Australian Supercars driver is in his fifth full-time season in the IndyCar Series. He has scored seven wins over 72 races and was a favorite to win the race from the fourth row. McLaughlin had a chance to compete for pole but crashed violently in practice before the final round of qualifying. Advertisement That was the start of what was a bad day for Team Penske. All three of its cars had qualified in the top 12 and had a chance to race for the pole. But McLaughlin never made an attempt because of the crash and Will Power and Josef Newgarden's cars were disqualified because of a technical infraction and forced to start the race on the last row. The infraction led to the dismissals of three Team Penske employees, including longtime executive Tim Cindric. As McLaughlin crashed, Scott Dixon had a brake fire on his car that appeared to eventually dissipate. The six-time IndyCar champion is searching for his second Indianapolis 500 win. With the race delayed by rain before McLaughlin's crash, the IndyCar Series started counting laps before the race officially went green. Once it did, Jack Harvey hit Marco Andretti as they went into Turn 1 and Andretti's race ended in the first corner as he hit the wall.

Supercars clutch New Zealand double-header for 2026

Supercars fans will be treated to a New Zealand double-header with a trip to Christchurch added for the 2026 championship and onwards. As reported by 1News last month, drivers will take their title hunt to Ruapuna Raceway in the touring car category's first visit to the South Island. The venue is located 15km west of Christchurch and will host Supercars events until at least the end of the 2028 season. Outgoing Supercars chief executive Shane Howard described the double-header as a dream come true, adding that New Zealand fans make up 20% of the sport's total audience. Ruapuna Raceway has become the first South Island track to host the showpiece event. (Source: 1News) "This is an incredibly exciting day for Supercars and for fans across New Zealand," Howard said in a statement. "Christchurch is a motorsport city, and Ruapuna is a circuit with huge potential. "This is a passionate community with a proud history, and we are thrilled to bring Supercars to the South Island for the first time. "We know what Supercars means to New Zealanders. This is going to be a two-week celebration of Kiwi motorsport that will rival any on our calendar." Friday's announcement comes after a popular return to New Zealand in 2024. Taupō International Motorsport Park has hosted Supercars events with much success after fan favourite Pukehoke Park was converted to a thoroughbred racing track in 2022. More than 67,000 fans attended the inaugural Taupō event across three days, with Kiwi star Matt Payne collecting the coveted Jason Richards Memorial Trophy following two race wins this year. Taupō would also remain on the Supercars calendar until 2028.
