Forget 'Superman' — 'Wonder Woman' lassos 'Supergirl' screenwriter to pen 'Wonder Woman' reboot for DC studios
With James Gunn's "Superman" dominating at the box office, all eyes are on what the revamped DCU has next. Now, DC Studios has hired playwright, actress, and "Supergirl" screenwriter Ana Nogueira to write its new redo of "Wonder Woman," The Wrap reports. The news comes as "Superman" soars past $409 million at the global box office in just two weekends, the kind of blockbuster success comic book movies haven't seen at the box office since pre-Covid days. Nogueira, who previously starred in "The Michael J. Fox Show," "The Vampire Diaries" and "Hightown," is quickly becoming one of DC's go-to hitters. She's also reportedly set to write a live-action take of Teen Titans for the Gunn- and Peter Safran-run Warner Bros label. "Supergirl," which debuts in theaters on June 26, 2026, will be her first produced screenplay, and it's being adapted from the graphic novel 'Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.' Wonder Woman's place in the new DCU (Image credit: Warner Bros. Discovery) Rebooting Wonder Woman has emerged as a top priority for the studio. Earlier this month, Variety reported that DC is fast-tracking the film, and Gunn told Entertainment Weekly in June that a new "Wonder Woman" movie is "being written right now." DC Studios is also reportedly working on a "Paradise Island" TV series for HBO set on Wonder Woman's home of Themyscira. Gal Gadot first brought the Princess of Themyscira to the big screen in director Patty Jenkins' 2017 film "Wonder Woman," which earned $822 million worldwide and challenged industry assumptions that female-led superhero movies didn't have as much pull among audiences as their male counterparts. Gadot and Jenkins reunited for "Wonder Woman 1984," which premiered on Christmas Day in 2020 during the height of the pandemic. Gadot also revised her role in "Justice League" (2017), "Zack Snyder's Justice League" (2021), and "The Flash" (2023). It's not clear what role Wonder Woman will play now that Gunn and Safran have rebooted the DC universe. Nogueira could take the character in a bold new direction, but that could prove risky considering the original "Wonder Woman" was one of the most beloved movies of the previous franchise. James Gunn Thinks Adria Arjona Would Be 'a Great Wonder Woman'
If Superman and the forthcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow weren't enough, a new Wonder Woman movie is officially in the works, too. In June, James Gunn confirmed that a new iteration of Wonder Woman is 'being written right now.' Ana Nogueira, who will also write Supergirl, is in talks to write the script. Here's everything we know about the new DC movie. Gal Gadot will not be reprising her role in the new Wonder Woman film. A new actress has not been cast as the titular hero yet, but Adria Arjona is rumored to be in consideration after people noticed that Gunn followed her on Instagram. 'I follow Adria on Instagram, but everybody came out [and thought], 'He just followed her, that means she's Wonder Woman,'' Gunn shared in an interview with Extra, per Deadline. 'She'd be a great Wonder Woman, by the way.' He also clarified that the follow wasn't recent. They had previously worked together on his 2017 film The Belko Experiment. 'She was in a movie that I made seven years ago,' he said. 'We've been friends and have known each other since that time. I followed her then, I didn't just follow her.' In a previous interview with ELLE, Adria Arjona spoke about the types of projects she hopes to make. 'I'm really intentional and I follow my intuition,' she said. 'When [the right project] comes in front of me, I know that's what I want to do next. When you're in the arts, you can't plan too far ahead. I could say right now, 'All I wanna do is comedy.' But [then I] would not be making good ones, you know? I like to stay as open as I can for the opportunities that are coming my way. I don't wanna get in my own way.' Not yet. On Threads, Gunn shared that though Wonder Woman is a 'priority,' it's not being 'fast-tracked.' He continued, 'Nothing is going to be shot unless we're as sure as we can be that the script is good.' No director is attached to the film yet, and screenwriter Ana Nogueira is only still in talks—not yet confirmed—to write the script. It's unclear whether Patty Jenkins will return after helming the two Gadot-starring Wonder Woman films. She was supposed to direct a third movie, but it did not move forward at Warner Bros. After the news broke in 2022, Jenkins said in part of a larger statement, 'I wish her [Wonder Woman] and her legacy an amazing future ahead, with or without me.' This story will be updated.

'Supergirl' & ‘Teen Titans' Writer Ana Nogueira Tapped For 'Wonder Woman'
The screenwriter behind Supergirl (2026), Ana Nogueira, has been selected to pen the script for Wonder Woman for DC Studios. Confirmed by James Gunn via Threads, Nogueira appears to be favoured heavily by DC Studios, having already written the upcoming Supergirl movie, which is currently in post-production, as well as working on the live-action Teen Titans movie that is still being developed. Though Gunn has denied that the Wonder Woman film will be fast-tracked, he has affirmed that it is indeed a priority amongst the DC Universe's upcoming slate of projects. Ana Nogueira Nogueira first began her career as an actor, notably starring in The Vampire Diaries (2016) and Hightown (2020-2024), later becoming a playwright, with Empathitrax in 2016, followed by Which Way to the Stage in 2022. She also expanded to screenwriting, with We Win (2018) as her first writing credit. Supergirl, directed by Craig Gillespie (Cruella), will be her first produced screenplay, and it will be based on the graphic novel series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King. Wonder Woman is a major character in DC Comics, forming the Trinity alongside Superman and Batman. The Wonder Woman film will certainly help lay the groundwork for the formation of the Trinity in Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe, given that Gunn's Superman (2025) has already taken flight to resounding critical and audience reception. Fans are already excited to see the future of the DC Universe, coming off the success of Superman , carried on the strong shoulders of the Man of Steel. The film also introduced, in a brief cameo, Milly Alcock's Supergirl, who will be making a proper debut when her titular film releases on 26 June 2026. With Supergirl's impactful appearance in Superman , fans are already looking forward to a radiant tomorrow for the DC Universe, reinforced by the Woman of Tomorrow. Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman in Wonder Woman 1984 (2020) Fans are now even looking further ahead to other projects in the DC Universe, with some beginning to clamour for Wonder Woman's film appearance. Gal Gadot ( Death on the Nile ) previously portrayed the character in the previous iteration of the DC Universe, the now-defunct DCEU. Appearing first in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), before receiving commercial success with 2017's Wonder Woman , Gadot received support for her role as Wonder Woman, though fans and critics alike have panned her acting at times for its stiffness. The role will be recast for the new DC Universe, likely beginning with the Wonder Woman film. This may go hand in hand with the Wonder Woman-centric television series, Paradise Island , that DC Studios has been working on for some time. The show has been described to be a prequel series, based around Wonder Woman's home of Themyscira, that will stylistically echo Game of Thrones . Though the production status of the show is currently unclear, it does appear that the future for Wonder Woman is bright at DC Studios. New WONDER WOMAN Movie Taps SUPERGIRL Writer Ana Nogueira to Script the DC Reboot — GeekTyrant
DC Studios is moving full steam ahead with its Wonder Woman reboot, and the studio has officially locked in Ana Nogueira, the writer behind the upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow , to write the script. This marks another big move as DC continues reshaping its cinematic universe under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran. Variety confirmed the news, noting that Nogueira is also writing a live-action Teen Titans movie for DC. The decision underscores just how important Wonder Woman has become in the new DC lineup. Back in June, Gunn teased the project during, saying a Wonder Woman film 'is being written right now.' A month later, reports surfaced that the film film was a big priority for the studio. The new film will reintroduce the iconic Amazon warrior for the rebooted DC Universe, but details on casting and direction remain under wraps. Meanwhile, HBO is still developing Paradise Island , a series set on Themyscira, though Gunn admitted progress on that show is 'slow moving.' For Nogueira, this is another major step in her growing screenwriting career. She first made her mark as an actor with roles in The Michael J. Fox Show , The Vampire Diaries , and most recently the crime drama Hightown . Her script for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be the first to hit theaters, directed by Craig Gillespie ( Cruella ) and starring Milly Alcock ( House of the Dragon ). Based on Tom King's acclaimed graphic novel, Supergirl is slated for release on June 26, 2026. Of course, Wonder Woman is no stranger to cinematic glory. Gal Gadot first brought the character to life in 2017's Wonder Woman , directed by Patty Jenkins . That film smashed expectations with an $822 million global haul and proved that female-led superhero movies could dominate the box office. Gadot reprised the role in Wonder Woman 1984 during the pandemic, as well as appearances in Justice League , Zack Snyder's Justice League , and The Flash . But with Gunn and Safran resetting the DC Universe, Gadot's era appears to have come to an end. The new timeline kicked off with Gunn's Superman , and has already grossed $406.8 million worldwide. That film even included a quick tease for what's coming next, with Alcock's Supergirl popping up in a cameo to retrieve her dog, Krypto. With Nogueira now crafting Wonder Woman , DC fans can expect the Princess of Themyscira to play a key role in this bold new vision for the DCU. No release date has been announced yet, but this move signals the Amazon warrior is officially back in the fight.

DCU boss James Gunn says Batman and Wonder Woman won't start production until they have good scripts because they "deserve the best"
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Now that David Corenswet's Superman is flying high at the box office and Milly Alcock's Supergirl is hitting cinemas next year, DC fans are already thinking about the next major superheroes that are set to join the franchise. Of course, we're talking about Batman and Wonder Woman, who are yet to be cast in the new DCU. When asked about when fans will be able to see these characters again, DC Studios co-head James Gunn said it's all about finding the right script. "I mean, it's not going to be until the scripts are ready. So, both the scripts are being written now, and, if they're good, then we'll go into production immediately," he told radio Urbana Play. "So it really depends on how we can get the scripts done," he added, "because the one thing I'm just not going to do is go into production without a script that I feel is fantastic, especially for those characters who deserve the best. I'd rather wait a year than go too soon". This is not the first time Gunn says the script is a priority for him. The Superman director recently revealed that he chose Supergirl as the next DCU movie because of its "incredible script", and he prioritised an unexpected project like Clayface because of Mike Flanagan's horror-inspired script. So we'll have to wait and see if Gunn loves the Batman and Wonder Woman scripts that are being written right now. Beyond The Batman 2, which is part of an alternative DC universe called Elseworlds, another Batman movie titled The Brave and the Bold is in the works. The film is set to follow Batman and his son Damian Wayne as Robin. "It's a strange father and son story about the two of them and based on Grant Morrison's run of the Batman," Gunn explained during the original DCU presentation. Robert Pattinson would not be reprising the role for this movie. In a exclusive interview with GamesRadar+ earlier this month, James Gunn revealed that "there's really no new updates" about the upcoming Batman movie, but they have a screenwriter "who's hammering away at it." There is even less news about a new Wonder Woman movie, after a third movie starring Gal Gadot was cancelled at DC. The recasting has been the source of much speculation since Gunn confirmed a brand-new Wonder Woman movie was in the works earlier this year. Gunn addressed Adria Arjona's fan casting saying that she would make a "great" candidate, but it's too early to confirm anything at this point. A separate Wonder Woman prequel series, titled Paradise Lost, is also on the way, focused on the Amazon island of Themyscira. Superman hits the big screen on July 11.
