New Dumbarton owner on not being a 'dud' and drafting in David Byrne

Lapointe, a musician and performer whose stage name is Vintage due to his love of all things old, has spent the past week at The Rock casting his eyes over his latest investment, meeting staff and supporters and finalising his ambitious plans for the future. The Quebec-based entrepreneur spoke to the media yesterday to explain how and why he had got involved with the venerable Dunbartonshire institution and he did, their longsuffering fans will be reassured to hear, outline in detail how he intends to stop them haemorrhaging money, turn a profit once again and revive on-field displays. But there were revelations, opinions, quips, asides and declarations aired by the colourful, engaging and hugely likable character during the course of a lengthy chat with reporters at the stadium which have never been heard at a fitba press conference in this country before and almost certainly never will be ever again. Read more: Asked about who his musical influences were and what kind of artist he is, Lapointe said, 'It's weird because I listen to rock, to Lynyrd Skynyrd, Supertramp, Styx, Def Leppard and the like, but I don't sing like that. 'People tell me I am a triangle of Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits. In terms of my own style, it's more of a storytelling style. You can listen on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, all these places. Someone recently told me I have 7,000 people in Brazil who listen to my music every month.' So what composition can one of his Instagram followers in Sao Paulo expect to be treated to next? A heartfelt rendition of his latest power ballad I'm So Happy I've Bought Dumbarton FC perhaps? Nothing should be ruled out. 'I will have to wait for the emotions to go down,' he said. 'I was at a bar recently and someone said to me that I must be really proud of what I have done. I started to bawl. But I have a song for every emotion that you have. Whatever you're going through, I have something for you. If you go and listen you'll see that it's very authentic. There are a few songs that are dark.' (Image: Colin Mearns) Lapointe is about as hail-fellow-well-met an individual as you could ever have the good fortune to meet. So where on earth does this darkness he mentions come from? It turns out that his woman done gone and left him. That devastating life event was the catalyst, in fact, for him dusting off his Gibson Hummingbird and returning to the stage once again. 'I used to write music when I was much younger,' he said. 'I used to be in a band around the time I went to engineering school. Then I basically stopped for about 30 years or something. But after 25 years of marriage, three boys, a cheating wife and getting divorced you end up with quite a lot to say. So I wrote songs about it.' Popular music legend David Byrne, the founding member and lead singer of the seminal American new wave band Talking Heads, originally hails from Dumbarton and it was no surprise whatsoever when Lapointe admitted yesterday that he had attempted to get in touch with the Sons' most famous son during their hour of greatest need. 'I tried to reach out to him so that I could get him to make a little video so that I could pump the tyres of the volunteers,' he said. 'Just so he could say something like, 'Hey! Dumbarton! I heard that there's a new sheriff in town!' But he didn't answer.' Dumbarton were on the Road to Nowhere for a long time under their previous owners. Cognitive Capital appeared far more interested in using the land around their stadium for lucrative property developments than assembling a winning team for fans to cheer. But Lapointe, who has been a hockey and football coach for the past 20 years as well as a successful electronics entrepreneur, believes he has devised a recipe for success on and off the park. Read more: 'I always compare a good team to a good salad,' he said. 'You can't have a good salad with just lettuce. I like radishes. In sports terms, that would be guys who have a little character. People like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, guys who are a little bit different. 'I want to have a team with Dumbarton who have character. It should be tough coming here for opposition teams. When a team shows real passion and character, sometimes you overlook a little bit the results. Even if you're not top of the league, people recognise a team giving it's all and being totally committed.' Lapointe added, 'The burn rate (loss) for the club has been close to £200,000 per year. My goal is for the club to move away from that and not to burn money. 'One of the first things we are going to do is spend around £20,000 to revamp our main hospitality suite. We want that to be something that appeals to people. They can come and have a great day out at the football and really enjoy our hospitality experience. 'We also have some big spaces, big halls, inside the stadium. Those could be used for birthday parties, wedding functions, stuff like that. At the moment, they are not being used at all. 'I also want us to start hosting music nights and open mic comedy nights. These are things that could help with revenue whilst also engaging with the local community in Dumbarton. Read more: 'You have to invest in things like this initially to start finding ways of bringing in revenue. Otherwise, you will just end up in the same situation where the club is pouring money down a hole. 'Stevie (manager Farrell) knocks on my door every week. We've had good conversations so far about our budget. But cup money, league money and sponsorship money equals the player wages. That's basically it. It can't be any more simple than that. You can't run a club purely with ego and ambition. You have to run it with math. (Image: Colin Mearns) 'People will attach themselves to our story of resilience if they feel we're successful. Nobody wants to be struck with a dud. I want everybody to be positive, because positivity spreads like a virus. 'The romance of Super Mario will fade. But we have one year where we can say, 'If you want to help this crazy French-Canadian, get a season ticket'. Some people are going to get in the locomotive and some are going to sit in the wagon. But at some point I'm going to unpin the wagon and we'll continue without the deadwood.' Only time will tell if Mario Lapointe can resurrect Dumbarton's fortunes. They are an odd couple and then some. But one thing is absolutely certain. There will not be a dull moment as he tries.

Kelly: Revered Quebec singer Serge Fiori was loved by both solitudes

Article content He didn't write all that much music in the 40-plus years since L'Heptade, but when he did, like for his very good solo album from 2014, it was as great as ever and became a huge hit. Article content After he died on June 24, the day of La Fête de la Saint-Jean, so many online were talking about the heavy symbolism of him leaving us on Quebec's national holiday. He was as loved as any contemporary Québécois artist and was a tireless defender of the French language and culture here right up to the end of his life. Article content Given all that, it's quite the rich irony that the local French-language music biz here was initially cool to Harmonium. I've met and interviewed Fiori many times over the years and he often told the story of how French radio in Montreal wasn't into the band in the early days. The first station to play Pour un instant was CHOM, and because of that Fiori always had a soft spot for the anglo classic-rock station. Article content Article content The band also signed with a Toronto-based disco label, rather than with any of the Montreal record companies. They often toured Canada to packed venues and even played throughout California, opening for Supertramp. Article content Article content Article content I asked him how it was that English-Canadians were so into Harmonium. Article content 'I don't know, but it was the first time a (Quebec) band was going there, all through Canada, with nights and nights booked in every city,' Fiori said. 'You'd go on stage and there's like 3,000 people at the Orpheum in Vancouver. And they sing the words in French, and that's very rare.' Article content The record company CBS offered to pay him to re-record the Harmonium songs in the language of Lennon and he turned them down. That day in the fall of 2022, I asked him why he said 'no'. Article content Article content 'Cause I'm nuts,' he said with a laugh. 'First of all, there's something about writing rock 'n' roll in French that is extremely hard. It's pretty easy in English. It sounds good with nothing. Once you get it (in French), it's so profound. The song is so amazing, so even translating that in English, for me it wouldn't work… and I think if I would have done that, Quebec would have turned against me.' Article content He said the reaction in Western Canada was exactly the same as it was here in Quebec — people just adored Harmonium. They told him they didn't care what language the songs were in, 'It was just the music.' Article content Article content He recalled travelling to Toronto with the band to meet with the executives at Quality Records and on the spot the label gave them five grand to make an album in Montreal, something no local label was willing to do. Article content 'We were too weird (for the Montreal record companies),' Fiori said. Article content But so accessible as well, you touched the heart of everyone, said Borne. Article content 'Yeah, but they didn't believe that,' Fiori said. Article content To which I chimed in, 'proving my theory that the vast majority of these record-company people know nothing.' Article content 'Thank you very much,' Fiori said quietly. Article content Then he started laughing. Article content

The hilarious tip to help nervous fliers during takeoff that actually works

Having a fear of flying is no joke, and being told that you're more likely to get into a car accident than a plane crash often does little to assuage your anxiety. But a new tip for nervous fliers has been doing the round online and people claim it actually works. Posting on TikTok, a user known as @elenaarco1 claimed that she had such an extreme fear, that before takeoff she'd have 'full-on panic attacks' and has had to get off a plane on several occasions. Elena said she'd tried every kind of calming method she could think of to ease her emotions, but to no avail — until she tried a 'ridiculous' tip. 'I came across a video of someone saying they always listen to a song that feels way too ridiculous to crash to,' she explained in her video. Fuel your wanderlust with our curated newsletter of travel deals, guides and inspiration. Sign up here. 'Ever since, every time the plane takes off, I put on Come On Eileen by Dexys Midnight Runners and honestly it's helped more than anything else ever has.' Thousands of people have liked the trick, with dozens commenting to share that they do it too whenever they are on planes. A user named @francescalc12 replied: 'Omg!! This is my turbulence song, I play it on repeat whenever I get scared.' While @danielleide2 shared: 'Party Rock Anthem does the trick.' Similarly, @emilyjane__96 wrote: 'I put Top Gun's Danger Zone on! Feels iconic on take off. 'Try it, honestly! You won't regret it. Pure rush of adrenaline and reframes the take off in a positive way. Makes you feel like a sick fighter pilot.' Others revealed they listened to Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield which 'saved' them, Supertramp's The Logical Song, and even the Coral Chorus Lobby Music from Fortnite. Is there actually any real merit to this tip? We asked a psychologist for her expert opinion. Dr Claire Vowell told Metro that it will all depend on the person, as treating fear is not a 'one-size-fits-all' approach. 'Fear of flying is common but there are lots of different reasons why someone would develop a phobia, for example a negative flying experience, fear because they've never been on a plane or because of anxieties in other areas,' she said. 'Fear of flying is treatable but it's not a one-size-fits all approach. 'Listening to a silly song on the plane may be helpful to someone as it would serve as a form of 'cognitive distraction', which stops the brain from focusing on the perceived threat. More Trending 'But it should be noted that this is a short-term coping strategy and doesn't address the underlying causes.' She added that for those in need of a more long-term solution, they should consider trying Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, which the NHS defines as 'a type of talking therapy where a therapist helps you to change how you think and act'. 'CBT is an effective treatment choice to understand the anxiety cycle. Learning how aeroplanes work is also a common approach. Common to other phobias, controlled exposure is considered the most effective treatment. This involves gradually building up to the experience of flying itself.' Do you have a story to share? Misty Mountain Records Releases 'Marcella,' Fifth and Final Single from JG Crawford's Album 'From the Mountain Top'

Duet with Marcy Levy, Co-writer of 'Lay Down Sally,' has a Bo-Diddley and Little Feat vibe 'It was a joy to work with Marcy on Marcella. I have so much respect and admiration for her talent and professionalism.'— JG Crawford LOS ANGELES, CA, UNITED STATES, April 18, 2025 / / -- Misty Mountain Records today announced the release of 'Marcella,' the final single from singer/songwriter JG Crawford's album 'From the Mountain Top,' which is expected to drop in May 2025. Marcella is a duet featuring Crawford and Marcy Levy, who co-wrote and sang on 'Lay Down Sally' and 'The Core' with Eric Clapton. The song has a good-time feel and a Bo-Diddley/Little Feat energy. It has Marcy and JG answering each other with each verse. 'It was a joy to work with Marcy on Marcella,' said JG. 'I have so much respect and admiration for her talent and professionalism. Indeed, I wrote Marcella especially for Marcy, having wanted to work with her since I first fell in love with her sound from when she worked with Clapton.' JG continued to follow Marcy's career when Clapton released 'The Core' and 'Wonderful Tonight,' after which Marcy changed her name to Marcy Detroit. She has continued to write and perform in Los Angeles. They met in 2005. JG wrote 'Marcella' in 2015. Marcella's lyrics feature JG playfully calling on Levy to 'jam tonight.' Marcy knowingly answers back that JG has that 'bad-boy smile', and he is the sort of guy that 'loves 'em and leaves 'em' all over town. Marcy sings that the behavior 'brings me down' and she would feel 'like a fool.' 'Marcella' was recorded in a private home studio in Topanga Canyon, California, previously owned by a member of the British rock band Supertramp. The single and album were produced by Grammy award-winning engineer Mark Howard, who is a frequent collaborator with Daniel Lanois. Howard is renowned for his work on Bob Dylan's 'Oh Mercy,' and 'Time Out of Mind.' Howard worked on U2's 'Unforgettable Fire,' 'Joshua Tree,' and 'Achtung Baby,' and has co-produced and engineered recordings for artists Lucinda Williams, Willie Nelson, Emmy Lou Harris, and Tom Waits. Howard assembled a group of famous, seasoned musicians for 'From the Mountain Top,' including Hal Cragin, one of Joni Mitchell's bass players, Jimmy Paxson, a drummer for Stevie Nicks and Keith Urban, and keyboard player for Leonard Cohn and John Mayer, Michael Chavez. The single is not the end of the collaboration between JG and Marcella. The duo is contemplating performing some special dates in the future. 'I'm excited at the prospect of working with Marcella on more creative efforts and performances,' JG said. Cover artwork credit goes to @Andrew_Mcgranahan.
