TLDM says acquisition of USV Swift Sea Stalker set to bolster maritime defence
LANGKAWI: The Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM) today received a Swift Sea Stalker (S3) Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) from Swiftships, a Los Angeles, US-based company. This acquisition is set to bolster TLDM's capabilities in maritime defence. In a statement, the TLDM announced that the S3 USV, a surface uncrewed platform, will provide an advantage to the TLDM fleet by enhancing maritime warfare capabilities in terms of surveillance and intelligence activities. 'This platform can be equipped with weaponry that increases deterrence in maritime warfare,' the statement read. 'The reception of the S3 opens new opportunities for TLDM to explore uncrewed platforms, which can also support the vision of the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF), especially in the Future Force Development Plan,' it added. The symbolic handover ceremony took place at the Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM) Pavilion at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC), where the Chief of Navy, Admiral Datuk Zulhelmy Ithnain, represented the TLDM, while Swiftships was represented by its Executive Vice President, Kristina Paskeviciute. The handover ceremony was witnessed by Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, and also attended by the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Defence, Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali. According to the statement, the RMN has already begun operating uncrewed platforms with the establishment of Squadron 601, which uses Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) ScanEagle assets as a force multiplier in maritime operations. Swiftships is a ship construction and marine engineering company based in Los Angeles and operates globally.

Microsoft's new Surface Pro could solve our biggest issue with the previous gen
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Microsoft seems to have taken our biggest complaints about the Microsoft Surface Pro (11th Edition) to heart. While we appreciated the Surface Pro (11th Edition)'s fantastic performance, stunning display, and superb battery life, it's price tag was a bit steep for a Windows tablet. But that should change soon. Microsoft announced new Copilot+ Surface devices during today's Surface AI event. The new Surface devices include the smaller, more budget-friendly Surface Pro 12-inch tablet, which was the subject of rumors earlier this year. Starting at just $799, could the new Surface Pro 12-inch tablet be our new favorite Surface product? Like the other Surface Copilot+ PC devices, the Surface Pro 12-inch tablet features an AI PC chipset with an NPU capable of over 40 TOPS (trillions of operations per second) of AI performance. This gives the Surface Pro 12-inch access to the full Copilot+ suite of AI applications including Live Captions, CoCreate, and Recall. The Surface Pro 12-inch is also the thinnest and lightest Surface device, measuring just 0.3 inches thick and weighing just 1.5 pounds, making it the most portable of the Surface lineup. And that makes it ideal for students, artists, and commuters. Microsoft has also revamped the keyboard for the new Surface tablet, with a full-size backlit keyboard and precision touchpad with adaptive touch controls. The keyboard lies flat when open and folds completely back against the Surface Pro tablet for easier use when writing or sketching in tablet mode. Finally, the new Surface Pro 12-inch tablet comes in multiple colors: Slate, Ocean, and Violet. With the addition of the new Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus (8 core) Surface devices, Microsoft has options for most budgets in this most recent Surface generation. Between the high-end Snapdragon X Elite-powered Surface Laptop (7th Edition) and Surface Pro (11th Edition), to the work-focused Intel Lunar Lake Surface Laptop and Surface Pro for Business that were announced earlier this year, and now the two budget-friendly options, there's soon to be Surface product for most everyone. The Surface Pro 12-inch will be available starting May 20, with configurations starting at $799. We can't get too excited about the new Surface Pro 12-inch until we get a chance to test it out and see if it truly makes up for the faults of the Surface Pro (11th Edition), but based on what we know so far it looks like it should address most of our issues. Microsoft found a way to fix slow Word launches, but it's not all good news Amid the slow death of Windows 10, Microsoft's CEO reveals a bold stat about Windows 11 Microsoft's controversial Recall feature arrives on Copilot+ PCs, here's what you should know

Microsoft's new 13-inch Surface Laptop beats Apple on affordability
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Microsoft's next Surface laptops are about to get a lot more affordable. The new Microsoft Surface Laptop 13-inch is available starting May 20, 2025, and will start at $899, which is the lowest price we've seen since the very first generation. It's nice to see the Surface Laptop, which takes a lot of cues from Apple's MacBooks, start at an even lower price point. But can the new Microsoft Surface Laptop 13-inch offer a quality experience at this low price point? The new Surface Laptop 13-inch is packing a Snapdragon X Plus processor that Microsoft claims outpaces the MacBook Air M3. That's not good or bad, necessarily — it's just about what we expected. However, it would've been nice if Microsoft jumped back to Intel or AMD because the ARM architecture limits certain Windows apps. That chipset is stuffed inside an 11.25 x 8.43 x 0.61-inch and 2.7-pound chassis that you can paint in ocean, violet, or platinum colors. I love the violet colorway, it's the only correct choice, sorry not sorry. Microsoft claims that the Surface Laptop 13-inch features the longest battery life of any Surface device, with up to 16 hours of active web browsing. That's a strong entry, if it is exactly 16 hours, it'll surpass the MacBook Air 13-inch M4 by 30 minutes. Surface Laptops usually rock a high-res display, but to maintain its low price point, Microsoft opted for a 13-inch, 1920 x 1280, 3:2 touchscreen display at 400 nits of brightness (that's good). I wasn't a big fan of the Microsoft Surface Laptop 7's display because of its poor color and weird ghosting issues. But I am hoping the new Surface can get past all of that (specifically the ghosting). Microsoft is also boasting about how quiet and comfortable its new Surface Laptop keyboard is. That's a relief because I didn't like the previous generation's, as it felt too hollow and didn't offer enough feedback to please my fingers. Overall, as a supposed Apple alternative, the Microsoft Surface Laptop has been disappointing over the years, with the last one being too expensive and mediocre. Nothing can really compete apart from the Surface Laptop Studio series, and that's just an overpriced nightmare. I want to see quality displays, comfortable keyboards, and incredible performance. Unfortunately, we're out on the last one, since the Surface Laptop 13-inch is going with the low-tier Snapdragon X processor. The choice aligns with the price, but again, we could've gotten more out of Intel or AMD, especially concerning graphics. Despite my concerns over this new Surface Laptop 13-inch, I am impressed by its low price, and if it can make a show for the best laptops under $1,000, we might just let them into the cool kids' club. You can pre-order the Microsoft Surface Laptop 13-inch today at Microsoft, Best Buy, and more. It'll also be available through Microsoft's Business Copilot+ PC family, which would provide you with Windows 11 Pro, anti-reflective displays, and security and management features. The business version will ship on July 22. Stay tuned for our full review and benchmarks of the Microsoft Surface Laptop 13-inch as well as the simultaneously announced Surface Pro 12-inch.

Surface Pro 12 hands-on: Microsoft's smaller, redesigned tablet
Microsoft is launching two new Surface devices — the Surface Pro 12 and the Surface Laptop 13. The new Surface Pro tablet comes with lots of design changes over the larger 13-inch Surface Pro 11. It is an Arm-powered device that is a spiritual successor to the even smaller Surface Go. Both devices are powered by the Snapdragon X Plus 8-core chip and we had a chance to preview the devices recently.
