Indian Army provides vital relief to shelling-affected Poonch locals in Jammu and Kashmir
Poonch (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], May 17 (ANI): The Indian Army carried out a door-to-door outreach in villages near the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch, which were severely affected by recent Pakistani shelling. As part of the relief efforts, Army jawans distributed essential supplies including medicines and ration to the residents, while also interacting with them to understand their needs. A local resident said, 'Our areas were affected by the shelling. The Indian Army has played a very important role on the borders and they are providing us with relief material. We thank the Indian Army. We stand in support of the Indian Army.' 'They are providing us with rations. I pray to God for the long life of these Army personnel. We are with them. Just as they are bravely guarding the borders, we too stand in solidarity with them here in Poonch,' stated another resident. Intense shelling by Pakistan during the recent conflict with India has left a trail of destruction in the border villages and districts across the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, with locals suffering damages to their houses and livelihood. Reportedly, the locals have suffered damages to their livestock, properties, and essentially their livelihood in border areas such as Nowshera. Earlier, Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary visited border villages near the LoC in Rajouri district and interacted with residents affected by recent hostilities. The visit followed the ruthless Pakistani shelling in the civilian areas of Jammu and Kashmir post Operation Sindoor, which was conducted on May 7. The operation was conducted in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people, including a Nepali national. Meanwhile, the locals residing in the border villages demanded that the government compensate them for the damaged houses. They also urged the Indian government 'not to spare Pakistan' for its misadventures. In the early hours of May 7, the Indian Armed Forces conducted strikes at nine terror hideouts in the deep areas of Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) under the 'Operation Sindoor' in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. Evacuation underway in at least 5 border districts of Jammu region
People are being evacuated from at least five districts in the Jammu region bordering Pakistan amid a continued cross-border shelling, which has left 18 dead and wounded nearly 60 wounded this side. Thousands have so far been shifted to safe places to relief camps. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, along with Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary and Minister Satish Sharma, visited relief camps in Jammu, Rajouri, and Samba districts to oversee arrangements and reassure displaced families. "Eight to ten thousand border residents have been evacuated from the Rajouri-Poonch belt," Sharma said, adding, food and medical facilities are being provided to them there. The shelling follows Indian missile strikes on nine sites across Pakistan and PoK in response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 civilians, mostly tourists. Pakistan has since almost unabatedly lobbed shells across the Line of Control and International Border, causing damage in Poonch, Mankote, Mendhar, Nowshera, Akhnoor, R S Pura, Arnia, Samba, and Kathua, and several other areas. Abdullah also visited relief centres in Mishriwala, Nagbani, Bishnah, and Thandi Khui, urging officials to stay alert and responsive. People living along the Line of Control in Poonch, Mankote, Mendhar, Nowshera, Laam, Balakote, Sunderbani, Akhnoor, and along the International Border in Garkhal-Khour, Marh, R S Pura, Arnia, Samba, Hiranagar, and Kathua are being evacuated, officials said. "Pakistan won't be able to break the spirit of Indians," Choudhary said, amid evacuation. Condemning Pakistan's aggression, Omar Abdullah said, "India reserves the right to defend its people and territory with full strength.

J-K: Deputy CM Surinder Choudhary reviews security, hospital arrangements in Rajouri
Rajouri (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], May 9 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary arrived in Rajouri on Friday morning to review the security situation in the region. During his visit, he conducted a thorough review of the hospital arrangements in the district, which has been a focal point for recent security concerns. Choudhary emphasised that this was not the first instance of Pakistan launching attacks against India. 'I reached Rajouri in the morning. I have reviewed the hospital arrangements. This is not the first time Pakistan has attacked people are brave. They (Pakistan) think that they can break the morale of people of India, especially J&K people, that is wrong,' he told ANI. 'People are standing with the Indian armed forces bravely. Pakistan will get a befitting reply. I appeal to people to keep up the brotherhood,' DY CM Choudhary added. In a related development, civilian houses in a border town of Jammu and Kashmir were damaged last night due to shelling by Pakistan. The situation prompted local authorities to take preventive measures, including the closure of schools, colleges, and educational institutions in Udhampur on Friday. Meanwhile, the Border Security Force (BSF) thwarted an infiltration attempt in Samba sector of the Jammu frontier on the night of May 8-9, neutralising seven terrorists. According to BSF, a large group of terrorists attempted to cross into Indian territory under the cover of fire provided by Pakistan Rangers from the Dhandhar post. However, the force said, the attempt was promptly detected by the BSF's advanced surveillance grid. The BSF's fresh action followed additional explosions reported on Thursday night in Jammu and Jaisalmer, prompting air-raid sirens and civilian evacuations in border areas. The Pakistani attack followed India's 'Operation Sindoor' on May 7, wherein Indian forces conducted missile strikes on nine locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. India said that these strikes targeted terrorist infrastructure linked to groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, in retaliation for an April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 civilians. 'Failed in my responsibility...': J&K CM Omar Abdullah as Assembly moves resolution denouncing Pahalgam attack
SRINAGAR: Jammu & Kashmir Assembly on Monday passed a unanimous resolution strongly condemning in J&K's Pahalgam in which 25 tourists and a local resident were killed. The resolution was moved by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary at the beginning of the special session of the Assembly today. The resolution described the attack as a heinous, barbaric, inhumane and cowardly act, and was unanimously adopted by the House after a three-hour-long discussion. "This House unequivocally condemns the heinous, cowardly act that resulted in the loss of innocent lives. Such acts of terror are a direct assault on the ethos of Kashmiriyat, the values enshrined in our Constitution, and the spirit of unity, peace, and harmony that have long characterised Jammu & Kashmir and our nation,' read the resolution. On April 22, a group of three Lashkar militants attacked tourists at Baisaran meadow, which is also called mini Switzerland, killing 25 tourists and a local resident, Syed Adil Shah, who attempted to snatch the weapon from the militants to save the lives of tourists. The House expressed its solidarity with the victims and their families. 'We extend our deepest condolences to those who have suffered irreparable loss and affirm our collective resolve to share in their grief and support them in their hour of need,' reads the resolution. The resolution also remembered the valiant efforts by Syed Adil Shah, the horse rider, to save tourists during the terror attack. 'This House salutes the supreme sacrifice of Shaheed Syed Adil Hussain Shah, who, while bravely attempting to save tourists, laid down his life. His courage and selflessness embody the true spirit of Kashmir and shall serve as an enduring inspiration for future generations,' it reads. The resolution praised the efforts of people in J&K in the aftermath of attack. 'This House commends the people of Jammu & Kashmir for their extraordinary display of unity, compassion, and resilience in the aftermath of the attack. The peaceful demonstrations across towns and villages, and the spontaneous outpouring of moral and material support towards tourists, reaffirm the people's steadfast commitment to peace, communal harmony, and the rule of law,' the resolution states. After the Pahalgam terror attack, Kashmir observed a shutdown against the killings. It was the first time in over three decades of militancy that a shutdown was observed in the Valley against civilian killings carried out by militants. Besides, people across the Valley held unprecedented protests against the killings. The resolution also endorsed the diplomatic measures announced by the Union Government after the attack. The resolution appealed to the media not to fall victim to the sinister design of dividing the people. 'This House is mindful of the sinister design behind the selective targeting of the victims of this attack. It appeals to all the sections of society and in particular, the media, not to fall victim to this sinister plot by irresponsibly inflaming passions. The need to remain united in the face of this attempted division cannot be overemphasised,' the resolution states. The Assembly appealed to the Governments of all states and UTs to ensure the safety, dignity, and well-being of Kashmiri students and citizens residing or travelling outside Jammu & Kashmir, and to take all necessary measures to prevent any incidents of harassment, discrimination, or intimidation. After the Pahalgam terror attack, the Kashmiri students studying outside the state have faced attacks and harassment. The resolution appealed to all political parties, religious and community leaders, youth organisations, civil society groups, and media houses across the nation to maintain calm, reject violence and divisive rhetoric, and work collectively to uphold peace, unity, and constitutional values. 'The Legislative Assembly of Jammu & Kashmir reaffirms its unwavering commitment to foster an environment of peace, development, and inclusive prosperity for all its citizens, and to resolutely defeat the nefarious designs of those who seek to disturb the communal harmony and progress of the nation and of Jammu and Kashmir,' adds the resolution passed unanimously by members of the Assembly. Concluding a discussion on the resolution, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who also holds the tourism portfolio, condemned the Pahalgam terror attack and admitted that he had failed in his responsibility of ensuring a safe return for tourists. "The security in Jammu and Kashmir is not the responsibility of the elected government, but I will not use this opportunity (terror attack) to seek statehood. How can I push for statehood using the Pahalgam terror attack?" Underlining the impact of the ghastly attack on the entire country, he said, "From north to south and from east to west from Arunachal to Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir to Kerala the entire country has been affected by this attack." Abdullah said the Baisaran attack took place after a gap of 21 years. "We thought such attacks were a story of the past. Unfortunately, this (Pahalgam) attack has recreated a situation we hoped had been left behind. We never know when another such attack might take place. I do not have the words to seek forgiveness from the families who lost their dear ones," he said. The Chief Minister, however, noted that even in the face of this inhuman and dastardly attack, a new ray of hope has emerged from Kashmir. "For the first time in many years, I witnessed protests that were truly unified. No political party or leader orchestrated them, and no organised banners or candlelight marches were planned. The outrage and grief were spontaneous, coming straight from the hearts of the people. Every mosque observed silence" he said. Abdullah emphasised that this change must be encouraged and strengthened. "We must boost and nurture this spirit of unity, compassion, and resilience that has emerged from among the people themselves," he added. (With inputs from PTI)
