Udupi DC urges citizens to priotise building a sustainable society free of substance abuse
Deputy Commissioner T.K. Swaroopa on Wednesday said the Central government has launched the drug-free India (Nasha Mukt Bharat) campaign under which citizens are expected to build a sustainable society free of substance abuse. Speaking at the fifth anniversary celebrations of the campaign at Volakadu Government Composite High School in Udupi, Ms. Swaroopa urged citizens to prioritise building a sustainable society in line with the campaign. The programme was jointly organised by the district administration, Zilla Panchayat, Department of Public Instruction and others. Administering the oath against substance abuse to students, the DC said addictions to drugs have become a social evil wherein a few people get addicted to drugs at a very young age, thereby ruining their lives. An addict not only becomes a bane to family and society, but also gets into committing criminal activities, she said. The administration would hold more such awareness programmes in the coming days. Ms. Swaroopa said the young generation should inculcate personal and social responsibilities and prove its mettle as the asset of Nation. It should resolve not to get addicted to substances even as students have the responsibility of informing the elders about activities of drugs peddling in their surroundings. Zilla Panchayat CEO Prateek Bayal; C.K. Shyamala, Deputy Director, Department of Women and Children Development; Ashok Kamath, principal, District Institute of Education and Training, and others were present.

Ganesh Chaturthi: DCs urge public to use eco-friendly idols
Mangaluru/Udupi: District administrations of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, have appealed to the public not to immerse Ganesha idols with chemical colours in water bodies. The practice of installing PoP idols that use chemical colours, and then immersing them in lakes, wells, and other natural water sources, leads to water pollution. This alters their physical and chemical properties, adversely affects the environment, and poses a threat to the lives of animals, birds, and aquatic creatures. Additionally, polluted water poses a risk to public health, warned Darshan HV and Swaroopa TK, DCs of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, respectively. In line with the high court order and the notification from KSPCB, a directive has been issued to protect natural water sources from pollution caused during the festivals. Immersing PoP or coloured Gauri, Ganesha idols in any lake, well, pond, or other water bodies in the state is prohibited. The DCs urged the public to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi in an environmentally friendly manner. They emphasised the importance of installing eco-friendly clay Ganesha idols to prevent environmental harm. Given the possibility of PoP Ganesha idols being manufactured or brought in from other districts, Udupi DC Swaroopa suggested setting up checkpoints at district borders to prevent their use and encouraged the production and sale of clay Ganesha idols. "Efforts should be made at taluk-level to curb the transportation storage and sale of PoP idols. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Become Fluent in Any Language Talkpal AI Undo Surprise inspections should be conducted at manufacturing units and sales locations. Local bodies should designate specific areas in lakes and riverbeds for the immersion of traditional Ganesha idols. Collection units should be installed for the disposal of flowers and other materials used in the worship," said Swaroopa. Udupi SP Hariram Shankar said committees installing public Ganesha idols must obtain mandatory permissions from the police department and local bodies. The use of loudspeakers is prohibited from 10pm to 6am, he said, and recommended to install CCTV cameras and lighting arrangements in Ganesh pandals. Meanwhile, the KSPCB warned of legal action against those selling PoP idols. The immersion of PoP or coloured idols in any river, canal or well is prohibited. Violations will result in appropriate legal action, the board warned, suggesting that idols made of natural materials should be immersed at designated locations. Swaroopa Ghosh returns to tv with a powerful role in Ami Dakini; says ‘I play the matriarch of the family'
Veteran actress Swaroopa Ghosh is making a notable return to the television screen with the supernatural drama Ami Dakini. Known for her nuanced performances in both film and television, Swaroopa steps into the role of a strong-willed family matriarch in a storyline that weaves mystery, emotion, and elements of the supernatural. Sharing details about her character, she says, 'I play the matriarch of the family, the grandmother of the hero. She is someone who knows the dark history behind the supernatural force that is creating havoc in the storyline. It's an intense and layered character with deep emotional undercurrents.' Swaroopa admits the timing of the opportunity felt right. 'Frankly, I didn't have any work at hand when this opportunity came along. However, the Bengali background made it easier to connect. My look is similar to how most grandmothers are portrayed in television shows, but with a slightly more authoritative touch. There's a certain gravity and presence to her,' she shares. Reflecting on her comeback journey, she adds, 'Initially, it was a bit difficult adjusting to the demanding routine of a daily soap again. But the people on set were incredibly warm and welcoming. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like France: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House Search Now Undo I got along really well with the director, Lalit Mohan, and my co-actors. That comfort made all the difference—it turned out to be a really enjoyable experience.' The actress also speaks candidly about how OTT platforms have impacted traditional television storytelling. 'Yes, I think the emergence of web platforms offering more realistic and high-quality content has pulled audiences away from the traditional, make-believe world of television. Earlier, TV shows drew from classic literature and real-life situations. The writing and execution were of a different caliber. Now, the obsession with TRPs seems to dominate everything, and originality suffers,' she notes. When asked about future roles, she says, 'It really depends. For instance, I did Adrishyam last year, a TV-plus format, and it was a good experience. I loved the role. So yes, if I come across something interesting that also pays well, I'm open to doing more television.' She concludes, 'A lot depends on the popularity of the show and the nature of the role. With so many channels and shows today, just getting visibility isn't enough. Whether you actually become famous depends on factors like how substantial your role is, whether it's positive or negative, and how much screen time and coverage you get.'

Spurious toddy claims six lives, 17 hospitalised
Hyderabad: At least six persons died, and 17 others were hospitalised after they consumed on Monday toddy that is believed to have been adulterated in the Kukatpally area. The condition of the patients admitted to NIMS and other hospitals was stated to be 'stable'. After the flurry of hospitalisations, the state government on Wednesday directed the excise officials to send samples of the toddy in question to the lab for chemical tests and decided to conduct regular checks at toddy shops in the city. The deceased are from HMT Hills' Saicharank Colony in Kukatpally. They have been identified as Tulsiram (47), Bojjayya (55), Narayamma (65), Mounika (25) and Swaroopa (56). According to official sources, Tulsiram and Bojjayya succumbed while undergoing treatment at the Gandhi Hospital. Narayanamma reportedly passed away at home before she could be hospitalized. According to reports, three of the compounds that sold the spurious toddy reportedly got their supplies from one depot. The victims consumed the toddy on Monday and fell ill on Tuesday. They were admitted to hospitals with complaints of loose motions and vomiting. The police stopped the funeral of Swaroopa, who died in a private hospital on Tuesday night. The police personnel took possession of her body which had been kept in 'Swargapuri' vehicle pending last rites. The police shifted the body to Gandhi Hospital for post-mortem and took the statement of Swaroopa's son. The incident has sparked panic in various localities where the victims live. Residents have demanded strict action against those responsible for selling the adulterated toddy. It is alleged that the owner of one of the toddy shops tried to hide the details of death due to consumption of hooch. However, the police, with the help of locals, found out about the cause of the death of a victim in the locality. According to Minister Jupally Krishna Rao, 15 of the victims were admitted to NIMS, two to Gandhi Hospital, while some others were admitted to private hospitals. The Minister said that the persons who had been running the depots from where to toddy was sold were taken into custody. 'Inquiry is going on. Remaining toddy is seized and spilled away; and the samples taken and sent for chemical analysis,' said Krishna Rao, who visited NIMS to interact with the victims. Local police have intensified raids in the affected area and neighborhoods to curb the sale of illicit liquor. Krishna Rao said that all those who had consumed the toddy showed similar symptoms and that initially they believed that it was a case of poisoning. The Minister said that the police and excise department officials had registered a case and were investigating the incident. He assured that whoever was 'responsible for playing with people's lives will not be spared'. He said some of the people responsible had been detained and were being interrogated. Strict action would be taken to prevent the recurrence of such incidents, he added. He said that clear instructions had been issued to the Excise Department officials to deploy special teams and take steps to ensure constant vigilance over toddy depots.
