Black Caps stay unbeaten in T20 Tri-Series with win over Zimbabwe

Photo: MICHAEL BRADLEY The Black Caps have remained unbeaten in cricket's T20 Tri-Series, being played in Harare, Zimbabwe. They've beaten the hosts by eight wickets to secure their second straight win and move to the top of the table, ahead of the Zimbabweans and South Africa. After winning the toss and sending Zimbabwe into bat, the Black Caps initially found getting breakthroughs tough, with openers Wessly Madhevere and Brian Bennett scoring 36 in the first five overs. But after fast bowler Matt Henry claimed Bennett's wicket with the second ball of the sixth over, New Zealand started to get on top. Henry, in particular, ended up shining, taking two more wickets, as he finished the best of the bowlers with three for 26 off his four overs. Adam Milne, captain Mitchell Santner, Michael Bracewell and Rachin Ravindra claimed a wicket each, as they restricted Zimbabwe to just 120 for seven off their 20 overs. And while New Zealand lost opener Tim Seifert early in their chase for just three, a solid partnership between Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra ensued to set up the victory. Conway ended up scoring an unbeaten 59 off 40 balls, while Ravindra's 30 came from just 19 balls. Daryl Mitchell helped seal the win with an unbeaten 26, as New Zealand finished 122 for two, easily chasing down the target with 39 balls to spare, with Conway named player of the match. "It was nice again to contribute today to the win," Conway said. "It's always nice to be one of those guys who stands out and puts their hands up and perform for the boys," he said. Meanwhile, all-rounder Glenn Phillips has been withdrawn from the rest of the series and the upcoming two-test series against Zimbabwe, due to a groin injury. New Zealand Cricket said Phillips suffered the injury during the Major League Cricket final in Dallas and needs "a number of weeks" to recover. The Black Caps are already without batter Finn Allen, who was ruled out of the Tri-Series with a foot injury suffered in the MLC. "It's obviously disappointing to lose someone of Glenn's calibre," head coach Rob Walter said. "Much like Finn, we really feel for Glenn and that he misses out on this series. "We know he was eager to get out on the field for the Blackcaps, and unfortunately, he won't be able to do that for this series. "We know he'll work hard to get himself back onto the park, and I look forward to when that happens." Phillips' replacement in the test squad will be named later, the NZC added. Black Caps' star newcomer Bevon Jacobs: 'One of those moments you dream of as a kid'
Black Cap Bevon Jacobs Photo: Alan Lee / Black Caps newcomer Bevon Jacobs was filled with pride as he made his debut for New Zealand. Jacobs played a vital role in the Black Caps' win over South Africa in the opening game of the T20 Tri-Series in Harare. He hit an unbeaten 44 off 30 balls and combined for a sixth-wicket partnership of 103 with Tim Robinson, as New Zealand beat South Africa by 21 runs. The South African-born batter admitted it was nice to finally stand next to his teammates and listen to the national anthem as he prepared to make his debut. "It is one of those moments you dream of as a kid, and to be there and to have family there also, it was a very special moment for me," Jacobs said. What added to the occasion was the fact he made his debut for New Zealand against his country of birth. "Our family chat went off with them deciding which team to cheer for, which was funny, but it was really cool as it was a full circle moment for me." The 23-year-old moved to New Zealand with his family when he was three. After his efforts with Robinson in the first game, the pair are likely to be named for game two against Zimbabwe Friday night, despite five regulars returning following their involvement in the Major League Cricket final in the US. "I'm glad it came out that way, but no I was always nervous getting that start," Jacobs said. "Robbo (Robinson) was really good out there and it was good to communicate with him and go about our work the way we did." Jacobs started his provincial career with Canterbury in 2023, before moving to Auckland a year later. He was picked up by the Mumbai Indians in this year's Indian Premier League draft, but didn't get on the field. New Zealand and Zimbabwe have only met six times in T20 internationals, with New Zealand winning all of them. They have played three times in Harare, the last in 2011 when Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill batted through the innings to score a 10-wicket win. The Black Caps were last in Zimbabwe in 2016 for a test series which they won 2-0. Cricket: New Black Caps coach Rob Walter's insight expected to help against South Africa
The Black Caps are set to play their first series under new coach Rob Walter in Zimbabwe, starting on Wednesday night. New Zealand are in southern Africa for a T20 Tri-Series involving Zimbabwe and South Africa, before playing two tests against Zimbabwe. Walter took over as head coach from Gary Stead last month. Mitchell Santner captains the T20 side, while Tom Latham will lead the test side. Santner said Walter had settled into the side very easily. "We've been chatting a lot leading into this tour and he's been around domestic teams in New Zealand (coached both Otago and Central Districts)," Santner said on the eve of their first game. "He's bringing in a fresh way to approach things, which has been good for this group." Walter is a South African and had helped the Proteas' white-ball sides over the last couple of years. Photo: AFP Santner said while they knew the South African players well, Walter's insight would help. "If you have a coach that has been in a few different environments then they're going to pick up on things that a team does or does not do well, and Rob has shared his views on both. "The great thing about Rob is that he is very personable with everyone and he'll tell you straight, and that's all the players really want. "It's great to have that inside knowledge on how we are going to play and how [opposition sides] may operate at times." It was a long time since New Zealand had been in Zimbabwe. They last played a test there in 2016, and limited-overs games in 2015. New Zealand players involved in the Major League final in the US - Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips, Michael Bracewell and Mark Chapman - won't be involved in the opening game as they only arrive in the country a few hours before. That means the three players that were called in as cover - Jimmy Neesham, Mitch Hay and Tim Robinson - could get a callup for the game against South Africa. South Africa beat Zimbabwe by five wickets in the opening game of the tri-series, with debutant Rubin Hermann top scoring with 45. Injured NZ opener Allen out of T20 tri-series in Zimbabwe
New Zealand Cricket (NZC) said on Wednesday that opener Finn Allen will miss the Twenty20 tri-series in Zimbabwe later this month due to a foot injury. The 26-year-old sustained the injury while playing for San Francisco Unicorns in Major League Cricket. "Allen's recovery timeline will be determined once he has returned to New Zealand and received further specialist consultations," NZC said in a statement, adding that a replacement would be named in due course. New Zealand's squad will be led by Mitchell Santner and includes hard-hitting batter Bevon Jacobs, who is in line to make his international debut in their July 16 opener against South Africa. Leg-spinner Ish Sodhi has high expectations for the South Africa-born 23-year-old. "This guy's an absolute monster," Sodhi said ahead of the team's departure to Harare. "He's one of those guys who bat at six and hit six from ball one. It's an asset I don't think we've had a lot of in New Zealand cricket. "It's great to have that kind of skill." Zimbabwe face South Africa in the tri-series opener on July 14.
