3 Indian education tools shortlisted for inaugural Global Edtech Prize
London, Aug 1 (PTI) Three education technology tools making an impact with innovative learning solutions in India are among the top 10 finalists of an inaugural Global EdTech Prize. Pragati from Room to Read India Trust, Gurukul from Avanti Fellows and LEAD Learning System from LEAD Group were named Top 10 finalists this week. The prize is created to spotlight trailblazing solutions that are driving change and grappling with the most crucial challenges in classrooms around the world. The prize, founded by UK-headquartered T4 Education with Owl Ventures and Digital Promise, will be awarded in three categories of Non-Profits, Start-Ups and Majors, with winners announced at the World Schools Summit in Abu Dhabi, UAE, in November. 'In using technology to solve the greatest challenges in education, you are making a difference to so many lives. The Global EdTech Prize gives you the platform you need to go on and scale that impact," said Vikas Pota, Founder of T4 Education and the Global EdTech Prize. Judged by educators, the prize comes in the form of a platform to help companies and organisations scale their products, tools or services to enhance impact worldwide. Pragati, a foundational literacy and numeracy assessment app, is seen as a scalable digital solution after its classroom observation and monitoring aspect has been adopted by the government of Uttarakhand statewide in the past two years. Gurukul, developed by Avanti Fellows and powered by Capgemini, made its mark as one of India's largest free online test preparation platforms for students preparing for competitive exams. Launched in 2024, Gurukul is a mobile-first, open-source platform tailored for low-resource settings. While Pragati and Gurukul are in the running in the Non-Profits category, LEAD has been chosen in the Majors category for revolutionising school education in India by transforming budget private schools into centres of academic excellence. LEAD Learning System has been recognised for its ability to transform student learning by codifying the best practices of curriculum design, lesson planning, teaching, training, monitoring and remediation and making it available in an easy-to-use form by teachers, students, school leaders and parents. All top 10 finalists from around the world will be invited to the World Schools Summit in Abu Dhabi to showcase their work before an 'Expert Panel" comprising leading figures in the technology and education sectors, including global investors and policymakers. The Expert Panel will then narrow down the final three per category who will present their products and tools before educators to vote by secret ballot to announce the winner in each category live on stage on November 16. Business Wire India In a significant global endorsement of India's growing role in the future of education, teacher mobility platform Suraasa has been shortlisted for the prestigious Global EdTech Prize by T4 Education, placing it among the Top 30 global startups creating measurable impact in classrooms. Backed by global organizations including Owl Ventures, Digital Promise, and Rethink Education, the Global EdTech Prize is judged by educators themselves and highlights tools that are improving learning outcomes on the ground. Suraasa was recognised for its pioneering Global Teacher Mobility model, which enables Indian educators to build international careers—tackling the global teacher shortage, with 69 million teachers needed by 2030, according to UNESCO. Unlike most edtech platforms that focus on students or AI tools, Suraasa puts teachers first. The platform equips teachers surplus from countries like India , South Africa, and the Philippines with internationally recognised qualifications, country-specific pedagogy training, and career guidance for placements in the UAE, UK, US, and beyond. Some teachers placed through Suraasa now earn salaries of up to Rs. 87 lakh ($105,000) annually. Rishabh Khanna, Suraasa's Founder & CEO, shared, " We are immensely proud to be recognized by T4 Education. We believe the solution to global education challenges, including the teacher shortage, lies in empowering our educators. Our mission is to enable tangible career growth for them, providing internationally recognized qualifications and vital connections to schools worldwide." Vikas Pota, Founder of T4 Education and the Global EdTech Prize, said: 'Congratulations to Suraasa's Global Teacher Mobility model on being shortlisted for the inaugural Global EdTech Prize. All of our shortlisted tools have one thing in common. They have harnessed technology in the service of education, and they are making a difference. From enhancing literacy development to building lifelong skills, supporting social mobility, and closing learning gaps, the Global EdTech Prize measures not only innovation but also impact. By giving a global platform to these tools, we help scale that impact at a time when it has never been more needed.' Next, the top 10 finalists for the Global EdTech Prize will be declared on July 31, 2025 . These finalists will present at the World Schools Summit in Abu Dhabi on November 16, 2025, where a panel of global education and policy leaders will select winners. The final vote will be cast by educators via secret ballot, making it one of the only education awards judged solely by teachers. At a time when Indian policy is focused on upskilling, global mobility, and NEP-aligned teaching quality, Suraasa offers a timely example of how Indian educators can drive global impact and how Indian edtech can export solutions the world needs. World's Best School Prizes 2026: Four Indian schools earn spot among top global finalists
CHANDIGARH: A government school in Haryana's Faridabad, one of the four Indian schools named among the top 10 finalists across different categories for the annual World's Best School Prizes organised in the UK, is leading the change to help transform the lives of scores of girl students by focusing and implementing physical and mental health wellbeing, nutritional support and community engagement. The Government Girls Senior Secondary School NIT-5 in Faridabad was selected for transforming the lives of at-risk girls by interlinking nutritional programmes, physical well-being and mental health support with education to break down societal barriers and ensure no girl is left behind. It is on the list of 10 finalists for the prize under the Supporting Healthy Lives category. The five World's Best School Prizes -- for Community Collaboration, Environmental Action, Innovation, Overcoming Adversity and Supporting Healthy Lives -- were founded by UK-headquartered T4 Education in the wake of COVID-19 to give a platform to schools that are changing lives in their classrooms and beyond. "In a world being turned upside down by AI, as technology reshapes the way we learn and renders jobs that have existed for centuries obsolete, amid growing challenges of climate change, conflict, poverty and populism, the world our young people are entering has never felt more precarious. And a good education, with humans at its heart, has never been more important," said Vikas Pota, Founder of T4 Education and the World's Best School Prizes. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Laxmi Ji Idol For Wealth, Peace & Happiness Luxeartisanship Shop Now Undo Besides the Government Girls Senior Secondary School NIT-5 in Faridabad, schools from Maharashtra, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh were also unveiled as contenders for membership to the Best School to Work programme to help schools attract and retain the best teachers, and celebrate the schools' enormous contribution to society's progress. The winners across categories will be announced in October. T4 Education calls itself a global platform bringing together a community of over 2,00,000 teachers from more than 100 countries to transform education. Dr Avinasha Sharma, who was an English teacher at the Faridabad school before being posted in another government school in the neighbourhood, recalled several initiatives which have been taken by the school from time to time helping it find its place being shortlisted among the top 10 finalists. A nutrition awareness programme at the school teaches students how to eat healthily while the students tend to a school vegetable garden. "During the period I was in the school and later also whatever initiatives were taking place, we worked towards healthy lives of children including focusing on their mental and physical well-being. Specifically, the area also revolved around the girl child, their health, counselling about menstruation cycles, and whether they are anaemic or not. We have been working on various sessions related to mental wellbeing, specifically focused on aiming for a purposeful life," Sharma said. NGOs also contribute to enhancing infrastructure and services. "We have various NGOs who have been conducting sessions in school premises and supporting school infrastructure also, in terms of sports activities. One of the NGOs has supported creating a football ground for students," she said. For Class 12 students, the teachers engage with students and parents to highlight the importance of higher education and career choice to support girls in building careers. The school facilitates parent workshops on health, nutrition, and education, and teachers and community volunteers personally visit homes, inviting parents to attend, she said. The school is empowering scores of students to confidently embrace the opportunities they deserve. Sharma said what makes this school different from others is here the leadership preserved whatever has been gifted from the community. "We tried to maintain whatever has been given. So, that's why this school has always been first choice among the CSR initiatives across Faridabad. That is the key to the success of the entire initiatives being taken up by the school," she said. K C Kaliya, the school principal, who was transferred from another school in Gurugram and posted in the Faridabad school on May 9, said the institute runs classes from Class 1 to 12 and is affiliated to the Board of School Education, Haryana. The number of students at the Government Girls Senior Secondary School NIT-5, Faridabad, is about 1,500, he said. "We have 57 teachers besides 13 junior teachers for Classes 1 to 5. The school has over 40 well-equipped classrooms. Each year we have a very good result which varies between 99 to 100 per cent pass percentage," Kaliya said. Expressing his happiness at the school being among the top 10 finalists, the principal said, "Over the years, the school has grown from strength to strength." He said the school regularly holds camps and seminars. "Along with studies, the physical and mental health of students is given priority," he said. "The students take part in extracurricular activities, excelling in yoga, sports and cultural competitions," he said. The principal said many pursue higher education, competitive exams, and leadership roles within their communities. The winners will be chosen by an expert Judging Academy, with all 50 finalist schools across five categories also taking part in a public vote opened this week to determine the winner of the Community Choice Award. The worldwide winners across these categories will be announced in October, with all the finalists and winners invited to the World Schools Summit in Abu Dhabi on November 15-16. Nearly shut down in 2021, Pune ZP school among 4 shortlisted from India for World's Best School Prize 2025
A Zilla Parishad (ZP) school in Pune district's Jalindarnagar village has been shortlisted among global finalists for the World's Best School Prize 2025 in the category of Community Collaboration in education. Three other Indian schools – one each from Karnataka, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh – have also been shortlisted under various categories for the award organised by UK-based international education platform T4 Education. The ZP school in Pune's Khed taluka was on the brink of closure in 2021 with just three to four students on its rolls. The school has since undergone a major transformation under the leadership of President's award-winning teacher Dattatray Ware, who was transferred here the same year. Today, it serves 120 students in classes 1 to 8, supported by just two full-time teachers, and stands as an example of how community engagement can redefine effective school education with limited resources. Talking about this journey, Ware said, 'The real change began when the villagers came forward. Many even donated their land to expand school infrastructure. We are running a skill-based education programme in 22 trades with help from villagers, many of whom are working professionals in varied sectors and volunteer as educators for classes related to their trade.' 'This is a ZP school run by the government but our motto is to not wait until the government provides. The school, with help from villagers, is proactive in obtaining facilities or creating the resources required for our students.' The school has established academic partnerships with institutions like Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) and Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), introducing students to the science and technology sector. Exposure to foreign languages and advanced mathematics skills are also part of the curriculum. Among the school's innovative approaches is the 'Vishay Mitra' (subject friend) initiative. This is a peer-learning model, where senior students mentor juniors, helping clarify doubts in a comfortable, student-led setting. 'Sometimes children hesitate to ask questions to teachers or in front of the entire class. With small group settings led by a friend from a senior class, they open up easily,' Ware explained. The World's Best School Prize is an initiative launched in response to the COVID-19 crisis, and aims to spotlight schools that are creating meaningful changes in classrooms and on the outside. Voting to choose the best schools will take place till July 9 and this year's winners will be announced in October.
