‘No one at fault': Ashwin responds after CSK clarification on Dewald Brevis signing

After the Chennai Super Kings were forced to issue a clarification on the replacement signing of Dewald Brevis in the IPL 2025 season, former India all-rounder R Ashwin has responded following the confusion that arose from his claims that the franchise may have paid more than the stipulated amount to acquire the South Africa batter's services. 'I will tell you something. About Brevis. He had a great time last IPL with CSK. In fact, a few teams were talking to him. A few teams left him because of the price. When he was supposed to be signed as a replacement, he was supposed to be signed at the base price. But what happens is you talk to the agents and the player will say, if you give me X amount extra, I will come,' Ashwin had said earlier this week on his YouTube channel. On Saturday, the five-time IPL champions declared that they had abided by the IPL laws to rope in Brevis mid-way through the IPL 2025 edition. 'Chennai Super Kings categorically clarifies that all actions taken by the franchise during the signing process of Dewald Brevis as a Replacement Player during TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 were in complete compliance with the rules and regulations of IPL,' a franchise statement read. Ashwin responds 'We live in such times where we have to clarify even true stories. In that way, it is a bit tricky. But I won't go there. There is no one at fault here. The clarification here on this matter has arisen from the fact that a lot of people have doubts. The point is the player is not at fault, the franchise is not at fault, and maybe the governing body is also not at fault. All of us need to understand that if a franchise needs a player, the franchise talks to the player or the player's agent and tells the BCCI, 'Look, so-and-so player of ours is injured, we need another player. ' The matter gets closed there,' Ashwin said on his YouTube channel. Ashwin said that his words may have been misconstrued and that several teams have made big-money replacement picks in the past, citing Chris Gayle's example. 'The IPL or those who need to give approval, give the approval, and the player comes and plays. If there was any fault here, that player would not have played in the franchise. This is not about Brevis; it is generally the case. There is one other thing I want to explain. My intention in the video was to describe how well Brevis was batting. We have to understand that every player who plays in the IPL has a tri-parted contract: The player, franchise, and the IPL have a binding contract.' 'So if something is wrong with it, it won't get ratified. That is why, probably, the tweet that said clause so-and-so makes complete sense. The flexibility that is there with the IPL's injury replacement, everyone is making use of it. It is not only CSK who have picked a replacement; there have been several other teams. RCB have taken Chris Gayle in the past, and he became a superstar. Injury replacements are a common facet of the IPL, and even in that, the rule flexibility that you have, how you make use of that, within the limit, you can use it. That is the point'.

Brevis' signing was in compliance with rules: CSK clarifies as Ashwin's remarks spark controversy

CHENNAI: Chennai Super Kings on Saturday issued clarification regarding the signing of Dewald Brevis midway through the IPL 2025 season, saying the signing process of the South African batter was in "complete compliance with the rules and regulations" of the league. A raging controversy was sparked as former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, currently in the CSK roster, hinted in his YouTube channel that the five-time IPL champions were willing to pay extra to avail Brevis' services. "Chennai Super Kings categorically clarifies that all actions taken by the franchise during the signing process of Dewald Brevis as a Replacement Player during TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 were in complete compliance with the rules and regulations of IPL," the CSK said in a statement. In April, 2025, Dewald Brevis was signed for a league fee of INR 2.2 crore as a replacement player for the injured Gurjapneet Singh, who was picked up at the IPL 2025 Player Auction held at Abadi AI Johar Arena, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for a price of INR 2.2 Cr, the statement added. The IPL rules in vogue state that the signing of a replacement player should not exceed the price of the player he will be replacing on the roll.

CSK issues clarification on signing Brevis during IPL 2025

Chennai Super Kings, in a statement on Saturday, clarified that its signing of Dewal Bervis as an injury replacement for Gurjapneet Singh was in 'complete compliance' with IPL rules and regulations. 'Chennai Super Kings categorically clarifies that all actions taken by the franchise during the signing process of Dewald Brevis as a Replacement Player during TATA Indian Premier League 2025 were in complete compliance with the rules and regulations of IPL.' Recently, confusion emerged after R. Ashwin, on his YouTube channel, said that two or three IPL teams were interested in signing Brevis, but CSK managed to get the South African by being willing to pay more. 🚨OFFICIAL STATEMENT🚨 Dewald Brevis signed as per the IPL Player Regulations 2025-2027, clause 6.6 under Replacement Players. — Chennai Super Kings (@ChennaiIPL) August 16, 2025 'I heard two or three teams were in talks with Brevis. They had to let him go because they were not ready to pay extra money. There would have been discussions with the player agent where he would have agreed to come only if he got a certain amount of money. His concept would have been 'if I play this season, my value will go up in next year's auction.' So he might have told that if you pay extra, I will come, and CSK was willing to do that, which is why he came,' said Ashwin. Brevis, who had a base price of Rs. 75 lakh, went unsold in the IPL auction held in Jeddah last year. The South African was then signed for Rs. 2.2 crore, the same amount CSK bid for Gurjapneet. CSK added in its statement: 'A replacement player signed pursuant to either paragraph 6.1 or 6.2 can be recruited at a League Fee which shall not be more than the League Fee that would have been payable to the injured/unavailable player for the relevant season. 'If a replacement player is recruited during a season, the League Fee actually paid to him will be reduced to take account of the franchisee's matches during the relevant season which took place before he was registered and any other relevant deductions under the player contract.' Brevis scored 225 runs at a strike-rate of 180 in the six matches he played for CSK. The 22-year-old is currently part of the South African team playing in Australia and scored a 41-ball century in the second T20I in Darwin.

CSK issues clarification on Dewald Brevis signing during IPL 2025

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Saturday issued a notification stating that its signing of Dewald Brevis as an injury replacement during the 2025 season complied with the Indian Premier League's (IPL) regulations. 'Chennai Super Kings categorically clarifies that all actions taken by the franchise during the signing process of Dewald Brevis as a Replacement Player during TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 were in complete compliance with the rules and regulations of IPL,' the five-time champion said in the statement. Brevis was unsold during the mega auction in Saudi Arabia before signing with CSK for Rs. 2.2 crore as an injury replacement for pacer Gurjapneet Singh. However, speculation over CSK breaching the set rules began on the internet after R. Ashwin suggested that CSK had paid 'extra' and beaten multiple teams to sign the Proteas player. READ | BCCI introduces 'Serious Injury Replacement' rule for 2025-26 season 'I heard two-three teams were in talks with him, but they weren't willing to pay extra, so negotiations fell through,' Ashwin had said. In its statement, CSK cited clause 6.6 of the IPL Regulations 2025-27, which states: 'A replacement player signed pursuant to either paragraph 6.1 or 6.2 can be recruited at a League Fee which shall not be more than the League Fee that would have been payable to the injured/unavailable Player for the relevant Season. 'If a Replacement Player is recruited during a Season, the League Fee actually paid to him will be reduced to take account of the Franchisee's matches during the relevant Season which took place before he was registered and any other relevant deductions under the Player Contract.' Brevis was an instant hit with the side, scoring 225 runs in six innings at a strike rate of more than 180. During the T20I series against Australia this week, Brevis impressed for the Proteas, smashing a 41-ball century in the second game before following it up with a 26-ball 53 in the third game.

CSK's Strong Response After R Ashwin's 'Extra' Pay Claim Over Dewald Brevis: "Categorically..."

In a season dominated by flops, South African cricketer Dewald Brevis emerged as a welcome addition for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) late in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. Brevis was brought in as an injury replacement for Gurjapneet Singh, who was originally signed for ₹2.2 crore. Though he joined the squad late, Brevis quickly impressed everyone by scoring 225 runs in just 6 matches at a strike rate of around 180. Now, former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has claimed that CSK may have paid 'extra' to secure Brevis, beating out interest from several other franchises. Speaking in a recent YouTube discussion, Ashwin said that the franchise went beyond the base price to ensure Brevis signed with them. Notably, Brevis' base price was ₹75 lakh. Shortly after Ashwin's comments, CSK issued an official statement in response: 'Chennai Super Kings categorically clarifies that all actions taken by the franchise during the signing process of Dewald Brevis as a Replacement Player during the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 were in complete compliance with the rules and regulations of the IPL.' OFFICIAL STATEMENT Dewald Brevis signed as per the IPL Player Regulations 2025-2027, clause 6.6 under Replacement Players. — Chennai Super Kings (@ChennaiIPL) August 16, 2025 According to IPL regulations, the fee paid for a replacement player cannot exceed the amount paid for the injured player being replaced. Since Gurjapneet Singh was signed for ₹2.2 crore, any payment beyond that amount to Brevis would violate league rules and could potentially land the franchise in trouble. Ashwin elaborated on how these replacement negotiations typically unfold: 'Let me tell you something about Brevis. He had a great stint with CSK in the last IPL. In fact, a few teams were talking to him. Some backed out because of the price. When you're signing a player as a replacement, you're supposed to sign him at the base price. But agents get involved, and the player might say, 'If you give me X amount extra, I'll join.'' 'That happens because the player knows that if he's released next season, he might go for big money. So his thought process was — 'Pay me well now, or I'll get more next year.' CSK agreed to the terms, and that's how he joined. In the second half of the season, CSK's combination was strong. They'll now head into the IPL 2026 mini-auction with ₹30 crore in their purse,' Ashwin added.
