Metrolinx seeks help to name 2 of its massive Ontario Line tunnel digging machines
The province's transportation agency is inviting the public to name two of its 'titans of tunnelling' that will be used to construct the future Ontario Line. Metrolinx is now accepting names for two of its giant tunnel boring machines (TBMs), which will be used for twin 16-metre-deep and six-kilometre-long tunnels in the southern portion of the subway project from Exhibition Station to the Don River. People are being urged to consider local landmarks and history, famous individuals and places as well as the unique aspects of the communities these machines will travel through when coming up with a name. Submissions can also include pairs of related names, Metrolinx said. Once the contest comes to a close on June 23, community members will be invited to vote on their top choices. The winners of the contest will be credited and will have the chance to be part of a photo-op with the massive TBMs at the tunnel launch shaft near Exhibition Place. Metrolinx first broke ground on the project there in November 2024. Ontario Line tunnel launch shaft site Site of the Ontario Line tunnel launch shaft under construction east of Exhibition Station. (Metrolinx photo) The first pair of TBMs recently arrived in Toronto after being assembled, tested, and disassembled in Schwanau, Germany. Two other TBMs are set to arrive here this fall. In October 2021, a naming contest was launched for the Scarborough Subway Extension's tunnel boring machine as well as two TBMs that were used to dig the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension's twin tunnels. After receiving hundreds of submissions and following months of voting, Diggy Scardust was selected for the Scarborough Subway Extension's TBM, while the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension's TBMs were named Rexy and Renny.

Delhi Metro Achieves Tunnelling Breakthrough On Golden Line Corridor, Check Details
Last Updated: According to a DMRC statement, the tunnel connects Maa Anandmayee Marg to Tughlakabad Railway Colony on the Tughlakabad–Aerocity corridor. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has achieved a major construction milestone with a successful tunnelling breakthrough at Tughlakabad Railway Colony station on the upcoming Golden Line, part of Phase IV of the metro expansion. According to a DMRC statement, the tunnel connects Maa Anandmayee Marg to Tughlakabad Railway Colony on the Tughlakabad–Aerocity corridor. The breakthrough was achieved by a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) after completing a 792-metre stretch in presence of Delhi Health and Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh, DMRC Managing Director Dr Vikas Kumar, and other senior officials, it said. The corporation said TBMs are designed to bore through various soil and rock layers while minimizing disruption to the surface. They are especially effective in urban settings and have been extensively used in previous metro phases. DMRC said the tunnel, located at an average depth of 18 metres, is one of two parallel tunnels being built for up and down movement on the corridor. The breakthrough on the second tunnel is expected by July 2025. A total of 566 tunnel rings, each with an inner diameter of 5.8 metres, were installed using the Earth Pressure Balancing Method (EPBM), the statement said. The precast concrete segments used in the tunnel lining were manufactured at a mechanised casting yard in Mundka and steam-cured for early strength. DMRC said ground movement was carefully monitored during the tunnelling to avoid any surface settlement under existing structures. Under Phase IV, 40.1 km of underground metro lines are being constructed, with the Tughlakabad–Aerocity corridor accounting for 19.3 km of that stretch, it added. The latest development marks another step forward in the ongoing expansion of the Delhi Metro network, aiming to enhance connectivity and ease urban transportation challenges in the national capital, it said. Golden Line: DMRC completes tunnelling at Tughlakabad Railway Colony station
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Saturday successfully completed tunnelling at Tughlakabad Railway Colony station in south Delhi for the upcoming Golden Line, a part of the Phase IV of the metro expansion, said a DMRC official. The tunnel will connect Maa Anandmayee Marg, near Kalkaji Temple, to Tughlakabad station, the last station on the Golden Line. The DMRC official said the last tunnelling breakthrough of 792 metres, achieved using a tunnel boring machine (TBM), took place in the presence of Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh, DMRC Managing Director Vikas Kumar, and other officials. TBMs are designed to bore through various soil and rock layers while minimising disruption to the surface. 'They are especially effective in urban settings and have been extensively used in previous metro phases,' the DMRC official said. According to the official, the breakthrough of a parallel tunnel running across the stretch will be achieved by July this year. Operation target Of the 23.62-km stretch of the Golden Line, 19 km is underground and the remaining 4.5 km is elevated. The metro line, according to the DMRC, is expected to be operational by mid-2026 and will feature four interchange facilities: the Magenta Line at Indira Gandhi International Airport's T-1, the Airport Express Line at Aerocity, the Yellow Line at Chhatarpur, and the Violet Line at Tughlakabad. A total of 15 stations will be located on the Golden Line, comprising 11 underground and four elevated stations. Once the Golden Line becomes operational, south Delhi will be directly connected to the IGI Airport. Work in progress Speaking on the occasion, the Transport Minister said that the breakthrough reaffirms the Centre's commitment to modern and sustainable urban infrastructure that enhances ease of living, reduces road congestion, and contributes to environmental sustainability. 'Ever since our [Bharatiya Janata Party] government came to power in Delhi, we have worked to restore the public's trust, and this is now clearly visible in the progress of long-delayed metro phases. What was once stalled is now moving at full speed,' said Mr. Singh.

Metro Golden Line: Delhi transport minister hails tunnel breakthrough at Tughlakabad
New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) achieved a breakthrough of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) at the Tughlakabad Railway Colony Underground Metro Station site, an official said on Saturday. This milestone was achieved as part of work on the Golden Line (Tughlakabad–Aerocity corridor) under Phase-IV of the Delhi Metro network. The breakthrough was achieved in the presence of Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh who lauded the engineering precision. He said that such breakthroughs reaffirm the Central government's commitment to modern, sustainable urban infrastructure that enhances ease of living, reduces road congestion, and contributes to environmental sustainability. 'Ever since our government came to power in Delhi, we have worked to restore the public's trust — and this is now clearly visible in the progress of long-delayed metro phases,' he said. 'What was once stalled is now moving at full speed. Today's breakthrough is not just a technical achievement, but a symbol of renewed momentum. In many ways, this event serves both as an inspection and a celebration,' said Singh. 'Going forward, we will further accelerate metro expansion and ensure that Delhi's citizens receive the quality infrastructure and services they truly deserve,' said the Minister. Vikas Kumar, Managing Director, DMRC, along with other senior officials and engineers were also present on the occasion. The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) completed the excavation of a 0.792-kilometre-long tunnel, breaking through at the Tughlakabad Railway Colony station using a 96-metre-long tunnel boring machine. This is one of the two parallel circular tunnels being constructed for the up and down movement of metro trains. The second parallel tunnel is expected to see a breakthrough by July 2025. The tunnel has been built at an average depth of 18 metres, with an inner diameter of 5.8 metres, and comprises approximately 566 precast concrete rings produced at a fully mechanised casting yard in Mundka. As of now, under Phase-IV, about 40.109 kilometres of underground lines are being constructed, with the Aerocity–Tughlakabad corridor alone contributing 19.343 km of underground sections, said a statement.
