PM Narendra Modi inaugurates Kanpur Metro, built by Afcons
PRNewswire Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 30: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated a 5-kilometre stretch of the underground Kanpur Metro. Of this, one completed station--Kanpur Central Metro Station--and 2.4 kilometre of tunnelling have been executed by infrastructure major M/s Afcons Infrastructure Ltd. Afcons-led consortium is executing the KNPCC-06 package, which was awarded on March 14, 2022. The project includes design and construction of a 3.826 kilometre underground stretch comprising three metro stations: Kanpur Central, Jhakarkatti, and Transport Nagar, two twin tunnels bored using two shield Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), with others. Tunnelling along this stretch posed significant challenges due to the presence of dilapidated buildings. However, Afcons successfully navigated these complexities and completed the tunnelling work safely and efficiently. Construction of Kanpur Central Station, which began in December 2022, and the tunnelling works between Kanpur Central and Nawabganj, initiated in August 2023, have both been completed. Afcons, which has been associated with Kanpur Metro since its early phases, was previously responsible for the Priority Section under package KNPCC-02. This package included an elevated viaduct and nine elevated stations from IIT Kanpur to Motijheel. Afcons completed this section in record time despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The section was commissioned and opened to the public in June 2021. Afcons is a leader in metro construction in India, with a presence in over 10 cities. The company has executed and delivered complex projects, including India's first underwater tunnel in Kolkata, the country's first four-layer transportation system, a 5.6 kilometre double-decker viaduct for the Nagpur Metro, and one of the largest underground metro stations in India.

Chinese companies to supply tunnel boring machines for Belgrade Metro
BELGRADE, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese companies will supply the first two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) for the construction of Belgrade's metro system, marking a major step forward in one of Serbia's most significant infrastructure projects. According to a press release from the City of Belgrade, the contract was signed on Friday by the representatives of POWERCHINA and China Railway Construction Heavy Industry Corporation Limited (CRCHI), one of the world's leading TBM manufacturers. The signing was attended by Andreja Mladenovic, director of the public utility company "Belgrade Metro and Train." POWERCHINA will build the tunnel section of Metro Line 1, while CRCHI will deliver the machines, which weigh 2,000 tons each and have a diameter of nearly 10 meters. Delivery and installation are scheduled for April and June 2026. "This agreement is a key step toward launching full-scale construction. The arrival of TBM machines means we are ready to begin tunnel excavation and deliver the kind of metro system Belgrade deserves," Mladenovic said, adding that CRCHI currently has over 15 TBMs operating across infrastructure projects in Europe. The City of Belgrade noted that the partnership between POWERCHINA and CRCHI brings together global experience and advanced technology to support the construction of a modern, efficient, and safe metro system that meets the highest international standards.

TBMs for underground section of Metro's Purple Line launched
1 2 Kolkata: The lowering or launching of the tunnel boring machines (TBMs) that will construct the Purple Line's underground section began on Thursday. Despiteuncertainty over the Kidderpore Metro station , Metro Railway, which operates the city's rapid transit network, and RVNL, which is implementing the 14 km Purple Line or the Joka-Esplanade corridor (now extended to Eden Gardens), are proceeding with the construction of the underground tunnels. As reported by TOI on Mar 9, the TBMs, each 90 m long and weighing 650 tonnes, were almost entirely made in Herrenknecht's Alinjivakkam unit in Tamil Nadu. They were dismantled into 18 parts each to be transported in trailers across 1,653 km from TN to Kolkata. During this time, they were stored in trailers outside St Thomas' Boys School. A 17 m deep shaft has been constructed inside the school premises to launch the giant machines. The machines will be assembled underground in the next 45 days, and the first drive may start byJune end. "Contractors L&T are deploying the TBMs to construct the 2.65 km twin tunnels from Kidderpore to Park Street," a Metro official said. The TBMs will first build 1.7 km from St Thomas' to Victoria. The second drive will span 950 m from Victoria to Park Street. The line's northern end, from Park Street to Esplanade, will be built using the cut-and-cover method. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gạch lát sàn cao su không cần keo – xu hướng mới nhất tại Việt Nam! "But Metro Railway is not sure if the Kidderpore station will be built at all, as land at Kolkata Police's Bodyguard Lines at Ekbalpore is not available yet, despite repeated pleas to the state govt," a Railways official said. Meanwhile, contractors L&T, awarded the Rs 2,447 crore underground package which spans 5 km, started construction of the Victoria station in Sept 2023 and began casting tunnel ring segments in their Sarkarpool (near Mahestala) unit in July 2024. "We seem to have waited for eternity to avail the Purple Line, which is being extended on both sides—beyond Joka and towards BBD Bag. Hopefully, the land impasse over Kidderpore Metro station will end soon, and people along Diamond Harbour Road will be spared the ordeal of travelling in crowded buses," Ekbalbore Road resident Farooq Ahmed said.
