Best Virginia is on to TBT semifinals following 74-61 victory over Shell Shock

MORGANTOWN — In the end, it was a shot that went a little long that gave longshot Best Virginia its first ever trip to the semifinals of The Basketball Tournament (TBT) on Monday night inside the Charleston Coliseum. Needing just one more point to reach the Elam Ending target score of 73, James Reese's jumper sailed over the rim and into the waiting hands of teammate J.D. Weatherspoon, who funnelled the ball into the basket to give the WVU alumni team a 74-61 over Shell Shock, a University of Maryland alumni team. In its sixth season of playing in TBT, Best Virginia is now just two wins shy of winning the $1 million winner-take-all prize money. 'We're not moral victory-type guys,' Best Virginia head coach Jarrod West said. 'I'm not downplaying it, but it's championship or bust. We're happy, but we've not done anything yet.' Up next is a TBT mainstay. Best Virginia will host Eberlein Drive at 6 p.m. Thursday (FS1) in Charleston for the right to advance to the championship game. Eberlein Drive – winners of the Lexington, Ky. Regional – has played in TBT since the first tournament in 2014, and advanced to the 2018 championship game. While Reese missed that last attempt, the former North Texas and South Carolina standout was money for Best Virginia the rest of the way. He finished with 24 points on 9 of 18 shooting, his fourth straight game with more than 20 points in the tournament. Best Virginia, which had appeared in only one other TBT quarterfinal game in 2022, never trailed in the game, but Shell Shock got as close as 59-54 in the fourth quarter before Best Virginia picked up its defense. Former WVU guard Kedrian Johnson picked up a steal and that turned into a 3-pointer by Toby Okani, a standout on last season's WVU team. Then it was Reese's turn. He came up with another steal on Shell Shock's next possession, raced down the floor and converted on an and-one three-point play for a 65-54 lead that represented the start of the Elam Ending. 'We were just playing ultra hard and ended up in the right spots,' Reese said. 'We've got high IQ players. If you keep playing hard, you'll end up in positions like that. The ball just happened to find me.' Shell Shock scored the first five points in the Elam Ending to make it 65-59, but Best Virginia took control from there. Jarrod West – the son of the head coach – made a jumpshot and Reese turned a Shell Shock turnover into a runout lay-up for Johnson. Best Virginia's defense also got a blocked shot from Weatherspoon and Okani came away with a steal of his own that turned into another lay-up. Okani came off the bench to score 10 points with six rebounds and two steals. 'Toby's a great X-factor for us,' coach West said. 'He's a flexible band-aid; he can guard multiple positions. With his intangibles — deflections, blocked shots, running the floor — he creates so much for us. His second half was very, very good for us. He's a big piece of the puzzle.' Shell Shock had 11 possessions during the Elam Ending. It turned the ball over on four of those and had a shot blocked on another. Eberlein Drive defeated Sideline Cancer, 88-75, and led by as many as 23 points in its quarterfinal. Gabe York, a former Arizona standout, led the way with 23 points. Terrell Brown, who played in the Pac-12 at both Arizona and Washington, came off the bench to add 14 points on 6 of 9 shooting.

Best Virginia, Shell Shock look very similar heading into TBT quarterfinals

MORGANTOWN — If Best Virginia is to make a run to The Basketball Tournament (TBT) semifinals for the first time ever, it just might have to beat itself. The WVU alumni team faces Shell Shock (Maryland alumni) at 6 p.m. Monday inside the Charleston Coliseum with three more wins separating Best Virginia from the $1 million winner-take-all prize money. On paper, the two teams are nearly identical. In winning the James Madison Regional, Shell Shock shot a combined 43.4% from the floor, averaged 74.7 points and 40 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, Best Virginia won the West Virginia Regional while shooting 43.5% and averaging 77.7 points and 40 rebounds per game. Both teams averaged just over nine 3-pointers per game. Shell Shock averaged 15.3 makes from the free-throw line. Best Virginia made 14.7 free throws per game. 'The blessing is we'll be back here in the friendly confines,' of Charleston, Best Virginia head coach Jarrod West said. 'The way we play, we'll have to rest up for a couple of days and get our legs back. It's funny, we've played three totally different teams. First game was 94 feet, run and jump and wear you down. Second game, throw the ball 15 feet and in. The third game was about veterans and professionals and isolation (plays).' The quarterfinal game may simply be like looking in a mirror of sorts. Both teams know about being in close games. Best Virginia's three wins came by an average of seven points a game. Shell Shock's margin of victory was 3.3 points per game. Best Virginia has the more explosive scorer in former North Texas guard James Reese, who is averaging 21.7 points per game in TBT. Shell Shock has the more recognizable player in 6-foot-10 center Diamond Stone, a former 5-star recruit who was a McDonald's All-American and ranked the No. 6 overall player in the 2015 recruiting class. He was a one-and-done player at Maryland before becoming the 40th overall selection in the 2016 NBA Draft. Shell Shock's leading scorer, Ronald March (17.0 ppg), just may be one of the better stories of the tournament, too. He began his college career at Houston Baptist, before transferring to a junior college. He finished his college career at tiny NAIA-level Philander Smith (Little Rock, Ark.) University, before embarking on a professional career that's taken him to parts of the world such as India, Sweden, France and Ukraine. 'We should be well prepared and ready to go for whatever we face,' West said. One change West will likely make to his lineup is getting 6-foot-6 power forward J.D. Weatherspoon some more playing time. After sitting out the team's first-round game, Weatherspoon, who played collegiately at Ohio State and Toledo, has scored a combined 26 points and added 21 rebounds in Best Virginia's next two games. 'I could have pouted, but I didn't say anything to the coach,' Weatherspoon said about sitting out the first game. 'I didn't want to send negative energy towards the team, you can't do that. I just kept a positive attitude. I knew the team was going to need me.' 'I take all of that blame,' added West. 'I told him going into our second game to be ready and we've been riding him ever since.' TBT 2025 Quarterfinals Recap: We Are D3 Beats Fail Harder to Advance

The Basketball Tournament delivered big-time drama in the quarterfinals. We Are D3 kicked off the action with a thrilling win over Fail Harder to punch its ticket to the semifinals on July 31. Up next, Heartfire takes on Aftershocks, a team loaded with Wichita State alumni. The other four remaining teams — Best Virginia (West Virginia alum), Shell Shock (Maryland alum), Eberlein Drive and Sideline Cancer — will face off on Monday night in the final two games of the quarterfinal round. Here's a recap of Sunday night's TBT action! We Are D3 95, Fail Harder 93 We Are D3 got off to a quick start in this one, putting up more than twice as many points (23) than Fail Harder (11) in the first quarter. Fail Harder found a bit of a rhythm in the second quarter, though, cashing in for 25 points compared to 21 for We Are D3. Marcus Azor (We Are D3) and Darius Adams (Fail Harder) led all players with 13 first-half points. We Are D3 took a 44-36 lead into halftime and came out hot in the third quarter, scoring 30 points with ease. Fail Harder went into the Elam Ending — the tournament's alternate ending, in which the game clock is shut off in the fourth quarter and a target score is set — down 20 points, 86-66. The target score was set at 94, and both teams went back and forth. Things came down to the wire, with both teams tied at 93-all after a fierce final quarter. In the end, Fail Harder came just one point shy of pulling off the largest comeback in TBT history. Adams led all players with 44 points, while Ty Nichols and Dimitrius Underwood led We Are D3 with 19 points each. Stay tuned for updates. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
