The Pokemon Company begs TCG Pocket fans not to blame artist behind plagiarized Ho-Oh, takes full responsibility after removing it
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. The Pokemon Company has taken responsibility for the Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket plagiarism, and has asked that fans not criticize the artist over the situation. Pokemon TCG Pocket's Wisdom of Sea and Sky expansion had a bit of a rocky launch as it was uncovered that card art for a new Ho-Oh EX card was plagiarized from a piece of fan art, resulting in a kind of hilarious card design being implemented in the meantime simply showing text saying "New art coming soon." However, in the time since, The Pokemon Company has put out a further statement about the situation, explaining where the issue stemmed from. In a Tweet posted on the PokemonTCGP_JP account (translated via Automaton and machine translation), The Pokemon Company says, "Regarding the previously announced issue with the Ho-Oh EX (3-star) and Lugia EX (3-star) illustrations – it has come to our attention that there is criticism towards the cards' illustrator circulating online." It adds, "The illustration errors were caused by the production teams of The Pokémon Company and Creatures Inc, who provided incorrect materials as official documents to the illustrator, and we intend to take full responsibility for it." Effectively, the artist was commissioned by The Pokemon Company to create a reworked version of art supplied to them, meaning the fan-art that the card's design had taken from was given to the artist by The Pokemon Company itself. The tweet also asks fans to "strictly refrain from criticizing or slandering the illustrator in question" and says the company will "strive for more through quality control" in the future to avoid a similar situation. Nintendo of America suggested giving Pikachu "huge breasts" during localization according to The Pokemon Company's CEO, who "won't show those illustrations to anyone as long as I live." Pokémon TCG Pocket's latest expansion just dropped, with extra controversy
Pokémon TCG Pocket's latest expansion just dropped, and it brings brand-new cards, even more Pokémon, and a pretty serious slip-up with regard to copyright law. Dubbed Wisdom of Sea and Sky, the expansion offers two different packs to pull from: a Ho-Oh themed pack, and a Lugia-themed pack. The controversy stems from illustrations; after datamining, fans pointed out that the Ho-Oh EX and the Lugia EX card art were seemingly plagiarized. The original artist @lanjiujiu shared a post on X, and it's easy to see the similarities even at a glance. Although this isn't proof that assets were stolen (and Lanjiujiu made a statement asserting that), it was enough to raise eyebrows — and enough for Pokémon TCG Pocket to pull the art in favor of placeholders. The team released a statement addressing the concerns just after midnight this morning. 'After internal review, we discovered that the card production team provided incorrect reference materials as official documents to the illustrator commissioned to create these cards. As a result, both cards have been replaced with a temporary placeholder that the team is actively working to replace with new artwork as soon as it's ready.' We'd like to share an update about the upcoming expansion in #PokemonTCGPocket. — Pokémon TCG Pocket (@PokemonTCGP) July 30, 2025 That said, the situation isn't totally clear. There are indications that the original artwork was a commission from the Pokémon Company, in which case it likely already owns the art. Another consideration is that the legal terms of use stipulate the Pokémon Company potentially has the right to use fan art without notifying the original creator. Recommended Videos The legal statement reads, 'Distribution in any form and any channels now known or in the future of derivative works based on the copyrighted property trademarks, service marks, trade names and other proprietary property (Fan Art) of The Pokémon Company International, Inc., its affiliates and licensors (Pokémon) constitutes a royalty-free, non-exclusive, irrevocable, transferable, sub-licensable, worldwide license from the Fan Art's creator to Pokémon to use, transmit, copy, modify, and display Fan Art (and its derivatives) for any purpose. No further consideration or compensation of any kind will be given for any Fan Art.' In other words, feel free to enjoy the game and its expansions, but be aware that any art you share might one day be used without credit to you.

Trading Card Games Event II draws over 1,000
Published on: Tuesday, July 22, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 22, 2025 Text Size: Abqaree (seated third left) with Chang (middle) and Ericson (left) and players at The TCG Event II. Kota Kinabalu: The second edition of The TCG Event drew over 1,000 participants from across Sabah over the weekend, highlighting the growing popularity of Trading Card Games (TCG) as a healthy, strategic, and social activity among youth. Sabah Youth Council President Abqaree Fawwaz Abekan, who officiated the closing ceremony at 1Borneo mall on Sunday, said such events are an effective platform to encourage Gen Z and Gen Alpha to connect in real life. 'Young people today have fewer chances for real-world interaction. Events like these encourage them to come out, meet peers, and engage in healthy two-way socialisation,' he said, adding that these activities help nurture both strategic thinking and communication skills. Abqaree urged continued government support and proposed the creation of a structured ecosystem to further grow the TCG community, potentially to the international level. 'Our youth need space, opportunity and platforms. With guidance and support, I believe they can go far,' he added. Organising Chairperson Chang Chee Ken said participation had surged compared to the inaugural edition. 'Last year we had eight card games and five hobby shops. This year, 12 card games were showcased with six stores involved. We had over 1,000 attendees across two days,' he said. One of the featured exhibitors, Ericson Lotidis, owner of R916 Hobby & Foods at Level 1, Megalong Mall Penampang, said the event not only boosted TCG-related sales but also demonstrated strong interest among local youth. 'There's clearly growing potential, especially among teens who are already playing or keen to start. I believe TCG can really thrive going forward,' he said. Ericson's shop, a popular hangout spot for young TCG players offers a variety of games including Magic: The Gathering, Cookie Run: Braverse, and Lorcana. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Peppa Pig toy exec sacked after ‘threatening boss with a pen'
A former executive at a Peppa Pig toy company has lost almost £300,000 in legal fees after he was sacked for 'brandishing a pen' at his boss. Mark Dowding, former chief financial officer, was fired from The Character Group (TCG) PLC in 2017 after a disciplinary hearing on the basis of a breakdown of trust. The company, which also makes toys for Pokemon and Doctor Who, was then taken to an employment tribunal by Mr Dowding accused of unfair dismissal over an alleged incident where he threatened his bosses with a pen. Mr Dowding lost his claim at the tribunal in 2020, with Employment Judge Omar Khalil saying: 'The tribunal concludes that the incident as described by [Mr Dowding's boss] did occur, which included the claimant pointing towards him brandishing a pen in a threatening manner.' Mr Dowding has since been locked in a five-year court fight as he brought a series of appeals and challenges, as well as launching a High Court claim. The former executive, who was on a salary of £110,000 at the time of his dismissal, faces a bill of £288,000 to pursue his latest claim. Faces losing pension and home This week, High Court judge Richard Spearman KC ordered Mr Dowling to pay the remaining legal fees. He said it means Mr Dowding now 'faces losing' the pension fund, which forms his only regular income, and maybe also his home. The court heard that Mr Dowding was employed by The Character Group from August 2012 to September 2017. Mr Dowding took the company to an employment tribunal, claiming he was unfairly dismissed and 'had been subjected to various acts of victimisation'. However, all of his claims were dismissed. The pen incident was described in the employment tribunal judgment as 'a work-related meeting between the claimant and Mr Kiran Shah (his boss). Their discussion became heated, and voices were raised. 'Mr Shah also alleged that the claimant had pointed a pen towards him, causing Mr Shah to retreat. This was set out in his email, which followed this altercation on the same day. 'In that email, Mr Shah said about the incident, 'Your behaviour was inappropriate and unprofessional. You raised your voice towards me in a threatening manner and pointed a pen in my face whilst rolling forward towards me with your chair. I had to roll my chair back to prevent injury to my face'.' Judge Khalil concluded that the pen threat did occur, and his dismissal was reasonable. 'A very unhappy position' Mr Dowding has spent the last five years challenging that ruling and other orders, before being handed bills for around £288,000 in July 2024. With one claim still live against the company – relating to his treatment by his former employers – an order was made last December to secure the existing costs bills on Mr Dowding's £850,000 home in south London. This week, Judge Spearman made orders to end several elements of Mr Dowding's claim, including his bid to sue his former boss personally alongside the company. The judge ordered that the rest of the case be struck out unless he pays the £288,000 he already owes. 'He is in a very unhappy position because, on the disclosure he has made, he can ill-afford to meet these costs liabilities. 'That is a consequence of bringing and pursuing expensive litigation, which has all been unsuccessful, resulting in the costs orders.'
