Team captain optimistic after Davis Cup success

KUALA LUMPUR: Davis Cup captain Adam Jaya believes his charges' strong performances in the Asia-Oceania Group IV competition which concluded on Saturday (July 19) bodes well for Malaysia's hopes in upcoming competitions. Malaysia topped Pool A in the competition after routing Nepal, Iraq and Kyrgyzstan - beating them all 3-0 - before downing Qatar 2-0 in the promotional playoff at the National Tennis Centre here on Saturday to secure promotion to Group III next year. Promotion was a relief for both Malaysian fans as well as the national body, Tennis Malaysia (TM). The squad was relegated from Group III last year. Malaysia had never competed in Group IV, which is the second lowest tier, prior to this. National team head coach Muliyadi Jamal opted to field a relatively young squad this year, featuring Darrshan Kumar, 18, Daniel Prickett (20), Leroy Yong (21), Naufal Kamaruzzaman (23) and Koay Hao Sheng (26). They dropped only one set throughout the whole competition. Adam hopes the players can continue their fine form at the Thailand Sea Games (Dec 9-20) as well as next year's Davis Cup. "Now that the job (promotion) is done, I believe we have a good group of players ahead of the Sea Games," said Adam yesterday (July 19). "We have the momentum now. I hope the players will continue to train and also compete in tournaments to maintain their form. "With this group of players, as well as a few who are not here, I believe we can be competitive at the Sea Games as well as in (Davis Cup) Group III next season. "We have been playing in Group III for many years so we know what it takes to stay there or to win it. We have the experience. "We, however, need to make sure our best players are available as Group III is an even tougher competition (compared to Group IV)." Southeast Asian heavyweights Thailand and Indonesia competed in Group III this year alongside Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Vietnam, Syria, Jordan, Sri Lanka and Cambodia. National team stalwart Hao Sheng was dependable as always, winning all four of his matches for Malaysia in Group IV this year despite feeling ill during his match against Kyrgyzstan's Mirgiiaz Mirdzhaliev. Darrshan was arguably the most outstanding player among the younger players in the squad, displaying outstanding court coverage, variety of shots and a solid serve which belies his diminutive physique. He thumped Iraq's Akam Bakr 6-1, 6-1 during the group stage before securing promotion for Malaysia with a decisive 6-3, 6-1 win over Qatar's Mossa Alharrasi. "He moves very well, this is his weapon but Darrshan also has good variety in his shots which are also quite powerful, this surprised many of his opponents," said Adam. "For a smaller player, he also has a very good serve." Darrshan will be leaving for the United States later next month to join the University of North Dakota where he will study biomedical engineering and play collegiate tennis. University of North Dakota is an NCAA division one school. Adam, who is also a former national coach, added that he is prepared to continue in his role as Davis Cup team captain next season. "Tennis has always been my passion and my love for the game will always remain the same," said Adam. "If I am offered the role of team captain, I will definitely accept it. My schedule is quite busy as I also have a business to manage but I will definitely find a way if my country needs me."

Open manhole may have caused JB van incident injuring 11 students, says exco member

JOHOR BARU: The school van carrying 16 students involved in an accident on Friday (July 18) is believed to have hit an open underground cable manhole, says a Johor state executive councillor. State works, transportation and infrastructure committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said he received a report about the incident, which occurred at Jalan Abdul Samad here at 7.01am. 'According to the police's preliminary report, the van is believed to have lost control after hitting an uncovered underground cable hole. No other vehicles were involved in the incident. 'TM has confirmed that no maintenance work had been carried out in the area recently,' he said in a statement on Friday. He added that the condition of the manhole suggests there may have been an attempted theft. 'I urge members of the public to come forward with any information or evidence, such as video recordings, related to the suspected theft. 'Anyone who may have witnessed irresponsible individuals opening the cover and leaving the manhole exposed is urged to lodge a report at the Johor Baru South district police headquarters to assist with the investigation,' he added. Earlier, Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the school van skidded and overturned along Jalan Abdul Samad here while transporting students from several schools here. 'The van is believed to have hit an uncovered drainage hole on the left side of the road, causing the driver to lose control and the vehicle to overturn,' he said. He added that 17 victims were on board, including the driver, nine male students and seven female students aged between nine and 15. 'Of the 17 victims, 11 sustained minor injuries and were treated in the yellow zone at Hospital Sultanah Aminah, while the rest did not suffer any serious injuries,' he said. ACP Raub said the case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless driving causing an accident. "The driver is currently having his statement recorded to assist in the investigation," he added.

When every second counts: How fake calls put lives at risk

KOTA BHARU - Behind the routine sound of an emergency call ringing lies a harsh, often overlooked reality: every fake call isn't a harmless prank - it can mean the difference between saving a life and losing one. Kelantan Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director Farhan Sufyan Borhan said that although Malaysia's emergency response system has become increasingly sophisticated through the Malaysian Emergency Response Services (MERS) 999, fake and prank calls continue to pose a serious challenge, often disrupting critical rescue operations. "Fake calls occur when the caller provides a full address, but upon arrival, no real incident has taken place. Prank calls, on the other hand, involve the caller remaining silent, making jokes, or merely seeking attention. The key difference is that prank calls are usually filtered by Telekom Malaysia (TM) before they reach us,' he told Bernama recently. He also recalled his experience before the implementation of MERS 999, when the fire department had to bear the cost of every incoming call. "Some people called because they were broken-hearted, others used public phones just to make jokes. Back then, it was the fire department that had to foot the phone bill,' he said. Now, with the MERS 999 system operated free of charge by TM, every emergency call undergoes a preliminary screening process. Additionally, caller details such as name and location are recorded to help expedite response times. Behind the routine sound of an emergency call ringing lies a harsh, often overlooked reality: every fake call isn't a harmless prank - it can mean the difference between saving a life and losing one. Photo for illustrative purposes only - Canva "By the time MERS 999 connects the call to us, the nearest fire station has already received the 'call sheet' and is preparing to deploy. However, we still need to ask the caller for more details, such as the type of fire or the condition of the victim, so the commander can better plan the operation. He added that the MERS 999 system is operated simultaneously by three call centres located in Cheras, Melaka, and Kuching in Sarawak. "If one centre is busy, the call is automatically redirected to another without affecting response time,' he said. He also addressed a common misconception among the public: "Some people assume that if a call from Sabah is routed to Sarawak, it causes delays. In reality, it doesn't; the system is designed to ensure a fast and efficient response, no matter which centre handles the call. He also recalled a tragic incident during his time in Sabah, where the fire department was accused of being late to a scene that resulted in three fatalities. "The caller gave an incomplete address, and the commander had to seek additional information. The victims weren't trapped by a locked grill, but the fire spread too quickly,' he said, adding that the case served as a critical reminder of the importance of providing complete and accurate details during emergency calls. While no fake callers have been prosecuted in Kelantan so far, Farhan Sufyan noted that in Sabah, legal action was taken after offenders were successfully traced. "We will lodge a police report for further action. These fake calls are not just a nuisance, they can delay aid to actual victims,' he stressed. He also described making fake or prank calls as not only a crime but a dangerous hobby that can cost lives. He urged the public to use the MERS 999 emergency line responsibly and only in genuine emergencies, emphasising that such irresponsible behaviour could delay help for real victims. According to Kelantan JBPM statistics, as of July 7 this year, the department has received 2,053 calls, including 796 fire cases, 1,173 rescue operations, 76 special tasks, and eight fake calls. In 2024, a total of 6,099 calls were recorded, comprising 3,112 fires, 2,755 rescues, 208 special tasks, and seven fake calls. This compares to 4,480 calls in 2023 (1,820 fires, 2,571 rescues, 82 special tasks, and seven fake calls) and 4,213 calls in 2022, which included 1,111 fires, 2,122 rescues, 978 special tasks, and two fake calls. - BERNAMA
