The best reactions to Tommy Paul's epic comeback win at French Open

The best reactions to Tommy Paul's epic comeback win at French Open Show Caption Hide Caption Jessica Pegula talks all things WTA and American women's tennis Jessica Pegula stops by ahead of the French Open talk about American tennis and her partnership with World of Hyatt. Sports Seriously American tennis star and esteemed racket twirler Tommy Paul, ranked 12th in the world, found himself in unfamiliar territory Wednesday afternoon, clawing from behind after Hugarian underdog Márton Fucsovics burst out to a two-set lead (4-6, 2-6). It looked like Paul's French Open hopes were going to fall short once again. Despite winning the juniors tournament at Roland-Garros back in 2015, Paul had only been able to reach the third round of the French Open once since becoming a professional (2024). He'd been a second-round exit three times (2020, 2021, 2023), and he did not want to regress. Paul was able to pull off the improbable though, winning three straight sets to take the match, advancing to the third round with a matchup against world No. 24 Karen Khachanov. Here are the best reactions to his remarkable comeback. Best Reactions to Tommy Paul's second round comeback When does Paul play next? Paul will play May 30 against No. 24 Khachanov. Rio Ferdinand could ‘quit UK with wife' after TNT Sports exit, future job plans, possible return

Rio Ferdinand could 'quit UK with wife' after TNT Sports exit, future job plans, possible return Rio Ferdinand will step down from his role with TNT Sports after this weekend's Champions League final as we take a look at both his and the broadcaster's future plans Rio Ferdinand will make his final appearance for TNT Sports this Saturday (Image: Nigel French/Sportsphoto/Allstar via Getty Images ) Rio Ferdinand has announced his departure from his role as a pundit and commentator for TNT Sports, with this Saturday's Champions League final between Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain being his last appearance. Ferdinand shared the news on social media, revealing that he has reluctantly made the decision to "step away" due to his hectic schedule, which marks the end of a 10-year partnership with the broadcaster. The former Manchester United and England star's decision sees him part ways with TNT Sports on very good terms, with the broadcaster expected to recruit a replacement. ‌ The 46-year-old said in a statement on social media: 'I have made the difficult decision to step away from TNT Sports after the Champions League final. Since retiring from football it has been a privilege talking about the game I love for a decade for sports fans watching on BT Sport and TNT Sports. ‌ 'To everyone at TNT Sports, we have a brilliant end to the season to look forward to on Saturday and for now all focus will be on what I think could go down as one of the great European finals. The network continues to thrive with more rights than ever. I know I look forward to following its progress and the exciting future that lies ahead. 'For a football fan like me it's been a dream come true as I turn the page to the next chapter I carry with me countless memories.' As Ferdinand's tenure with TNT Sports draws to a close, we take a look at what lies ahead for both the former footballer and the broadcaster. Future jobs and potential return In March, the Daily Mail reported that TNT bosses proposed a contract extension to Ferdinand at the end of his current term, which he has chosen not to accept. Having been a prominent figure in TNT's Champions League football coverage, it is understood that there may still be opportunities for him to make guest appearances in the future, particularly as the broadcaster is set to secure rights to the FA Cup from next season. ‌ Yet, Ferdinand has made it clear that he intends to concentrate on other ventures, including his management firm 'New Era' and his blossoming production company that creates podcasts and interviews. The Mail also reported that Ferdinand could now look to move into US coverage with his management company recently signing an agreement with William Morris Endeavor (WME), who represent a number of American celebrities such as Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds from their base in Beverly Hills. There's undoubtedly a growing demand for Premier League legends to provide football analysis in the US. Ex-players like Jamie Carragher, Thierry Henry and Micah Richards have enjoyed huge success on their CBS show, while this season has seen NBC Sports hire Gary Neville. Ferdinand could be looking to follow suit, especially with the 2026 World Cup in the US, Canada and Mexico right on the horizon, which is set to bring a fresh audience to the sport in North America. ‌ 'Quitting' UK with wife Rio Ferdinand and his wife Kate are reportedly considering a move to Dubai (Image: Channel 4 ) Ferdinand's statement indicated that his plans to step away are also tied to his desire to spend more time with his family. He wrote on his social media platforms: 'I'm excited about what the future holds, spending more time with my family focusing on Rio Ferdinand Presents and my other business interests.' It follows The Sun's report last month claiming Ferdinand, alongside his wife Kate, may be considering a move to Dubai. It was claimed that the couple have already started looking at properties and schools in Dubai, having reportedly decided that now is the right time for them and their family to relocate. ‌ They share two children together, while Kate is also a stepmother to the former footballer's three children from his previous marriage to late wife Rebecca Ellison, who died from cancer in 2015. It was also claimed that they will travel back and forth to the UK to fulfil their work commitments, with Kate being the founder of podcast and online platform 'blended'. As of now, any definitive plans to leave the UK have not been officially verified by Ferdinand. Hitting back at punditry criticism Ferdinand's outspokenness as a pundit and unwavering support for his former club, United, has occasionally sparked criticism from TNT Sports viewers. One instance was when he suggested Ibrahima Konate should have received a red card for a last-man challenge during Liverpool's Champions League match against PSG in March, prompting a Liverpool fan to accuse him of bias. The fan expressed their discontent on X, saying: "Look, football fans have had enough of the likes of Ferdinand and others. They've had enough of bitter commentators not having any neutrality in the job that they're doing. ‌ "You don't need people like Rio Ferdinand there commentating on a Liverpool game knowing that he doesn't want to see you do anything or win anything. He should be behind the English club. But as is always the case with these commentators, their previous bias creeps in. Let me just say this wholeheartedly, f*** you Rio." Ferdinand promptly responded to the critical comments, pointing out: "I wasn't on the gantry when Liverpool scored. Like in the first half where I left the commentary position to go back down pitchside after 36 minutes. I was asked to do the same in the second half prior to the goal. Thanks." Rio Ferdinand and Robbie Savage celebrated Manchester United's comeback (Image: TNT Sports ) ‌ Ferdinand and fellow TNT Sports pundit Robbie Savage were also criticised for their joyous reactions in the commentary box after United overturned a 4-2 deficit in extra time to beat Lyon 5-4 in the Europa League. Savage defended Ferdinand by saying: 'Some of the comments questioned whether Rio's contribution was impartial given his 455 appearances and 10 major trophies, including six titles, as a United player. But I defy anyone – whether you played the game for United or another club - not to be excited by such an extraordinary finish. "Football is an emotional game, and if co-commentators convey their passion when they are watching something sensational, they are only reflecting what viewers are feeling in their armchairs at home. Whether or not you approved of our antics caught on the TNT 'comms cam', surely you can't look at something so incredible and remain indifferent. "Rio is a United legend who knows the club, how it works and who calls the shots. He is not going to sit on his hands and sound like he's reading the shipping forecast when his old team goes from 4-2 down with six minutes left to a 5-4 win. It's not bias, it's human emotion." ‌ Ferdinand and other pundits also came under fire for their harsh critique of England's performance at Euro 2024, where the Three Lions underperformed for much of the tournament despite reaching the final. He said on an episode of Rio Ferdinand Presents: 'If there's been below par performances, there's no way that you can expect anyone, us as pundits or fans, to sit there and go, 'Well done guys – pat on the back.' I played in tournaments where we didn't do well. I never expected anybody to then come out with positive comments. I don't think in any industry you work in, if you don't perform, that you'd expect anything other than criticism." Hospitalised before Champions League night Ferdinand was unable to cover Arsenal's trip to PSG last month after being rushed to hospital. The Red Devils icon shared a selfie from a hospital bed on social media, captioning it: 'Gutted to be missing the Semi-Finals this week on @tntsportsfootball! Wishing the team all the best — I'll be watching every minute from the iPad!" After receiving an outpouring of support from his followers, the ex-defender revealed on Rio Ferdinand Presents that he had been struck down by a severe virus, which at one point made him fear for his life. He recounted: "I had a mad virus. I thought lights were out at some point, I thought it was gonna happen. I thought I was minutes away from lights out, seriously. ‌ 'I was in my house, I was in my bed like this (pained expression) and I couldn't even open my eyes. Then, the headache I had… I don't get migraines or nothing else so I don't know what they're like. I thought my head was in a vice and my eyes were going to pop out. Then, I was being sick, projectile vomiting in the toilet, I got back to bed and I was having vertigo. I was holding onto the sheets, I didn't know where I was. It was crazy." He continued: "I had to go to hospital and the doctor even said to me, 'Do you want an ambulance?' So that's when I knew. He went, 'We're going to get your brain scanned.' I thought it was a virus or a flu or something so when he mentioned brain scan and the ambulance, the panic was nuts. I went to hospital and I was in there for a few days. I couldn't even enjoy the hospital food. The soup and the ice cream normally does wonders." Gareth Bale could replace Ferdinand (Image: TNT Sports ) ‌ What lies ahead for TNT? Ferdinand's departure means he will miss an exciting period at TNT Sports. The broadcaster announced in March that it will continue to show live and exclusive Premier League matches for another four years, through to the 2028/29 season, which extends its partnership with the English top flight to 16 years. That will be offered alongside its existing portfolio, which includes the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Women's Champions League, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Conference League and National League, domestic and European club rugby, MotoGP, NBA, UFC and boxing. BT Sport, as it was previously called, won exclusive rights to all live Champions League fixtures and highlights back in 2018. Its current European football deal, which runs from 2024 until 2027, means it still holds exclusive rights to show the Europa League and Europa Conference League. However, it is part of a trio of broadcasters for the first three seasons of the Champions League in its new format, alongside Amazon Prime and the BBC. Amazon Prime airs one match on Tuesdays, while the BBC presents a highlights show each matchweek. Article continues below Rio's replacement It's expected that TNT will begin their search for Ferdinand's replacement and announce their decision in the coming months. One potential candidate is former Real Madrid star Gareth Bale. The Welsh football legend recently worked alongside Ferdinand for the Europa League final, where his insightful commentary was well received by viewers as his former team Spurs triumphed over Ferdinand's beloved United.

Mic drop: Rio Ferdinand leaves TNT Sports for ‘new chapter'

FRAZZLED FERDINAND In the preliminaries before kick-off between Aston Villa and Paris Saint-Germain at Parc des Princes last month, TNT Sports landed something of a coup. Having got celebrity Villa fan Prince William to agree to a pre-match interview, Rio Ferdinand and Ally McCoist were dispatched to ask His Royal Highness The Duke of Cornwall and Cambridge for his thoughts on how the game might unfold. While both former footballers have reached an age where they no longer have forelocks worthy of the name left to tug, Rio was so impressed with William's knowledge of gegenpressing, xG and heat maps that he issued a stark warning to the heir to the throne. 'Do not go into a punditry job because I could be out of the game,' he joked, as those armchair viewers the length and breadth of the country who are forced to pay top dollar for TNT subscriptions if they want to watch European football dared to dream. Advertisement While there is no evidence to suggest that Prince William subsequently sent an equerry to hand one's curriculum vitae into the network's personnel department in the hope of earning a place in the gantry alongside Darren Fletcher and Lucy Ward on co-comms, today it was revealed that Rio is out of the punditry game anyway. The former Manchester United defender has quit TNT after a decade's service to focus on making YouTube videos in which he says 'geezer' a lot, hawking branded snapbacks and chilling with his family. His final outing with Woodsy, Resh, Fletch, Sav, Luce, Coisty, Jules, Crouchy and Owen Hargreaves will be at the Bigger Cup final between PSG and Inter at the Allianz Arena. It is to be hoped he marks the occasion by engineering another one of those ludicrous scenarios where he makes sure the cameras are rolling before studiously not stepping on a club-branded carpet in a preposterously performative show of respect. 'Since retiring from football, it has been a privilege talking about the game I love for a decade for sports fans watching BT Sport and TNT Sports,' he announced in a statement on his Social Media Disgraces. 'I want to acknowledge the tremendous support from the team behind the scenes, whose hard work often goes unseen but has been essential to our success. As I turn the page to the next chapter, I carry with me countless memories. I am excited about what the future holds, spending more time with my family, focusing on Rio Ferdinand Presents and my other business interests.' Whether it was stating the bland and blindingly obvious at great and tedious length, repeatedly parroting 'Ballon d'Or!' at the top of his voice in praise of a player who would go on to be overlooked for the award in question, or abandoning any small pretence at professionalism by reducing the commentary of a recent dramatic finale to the status of FanZone homage, Ferdinand has carved out a unique and lucrative niche in the punditry pantheon over the past decade. While TNT have yet to announce how they plan to fill the gaping void that will be left by the absence of his searing football insight and top-tier banter, subscribers can at least rest easy, safe in the knowledge that the inevitable montage of his 'best bits' shown at the end of Saturday night's Bigger Cup broadcast should be mercifully brief. QUOTE OF THE DAY [Mikel Arteta] had time to get a nine, he had time … Manchester United played five finals in the last five years. The United that everyone laughs at played five finals. In the last three years of building that building, you didn't reach a final, so I do understand when people ask the question. Surely you should compete for a trophy, being in the final?' – Thierry Henry doesn't hold back in outlining frustrations at Arsenal's failure to sign a goalscorer, reach a final or win a trophy this season. FOOTBALL DAILY LETTERS 'Entries on The Knowledge are always worth reading, but the clip showing Jeff Astle's tap-in against Leeds after an outrageous non-offside call was especially entertaining. The referee's howler was the main feature, of course, but three cameos really made it memorable: the old chap in the St John's ambulance uniform, chuckling away at Astle's celebration; Don Revie showing untameable outrage by the old-school method of pursing his lips and shaking his head; and the highlight, a fleeting shot of a man in a suit, who could only be Arthur Scargill, being hauled off the pitch protesting against the injustice of it all. Glory days indeed' – Charles Antaki. Advertisement 'Re Tuesday's Football Daily, can I be amongst the first of 1,057 pedants to point out that Chelsea came fourth, not fifth' – Matthew Purchase (and 1,056 others). Send letters to Today's prizeless letter o' the day winner is … Charles Antaki. Terms and conditions for our competitions can be viewed here. NEWS, BITS AND BOBS Manchester United's season just somehow got a little worse: Ruben Amorim's side have lost 1-0 to Asean All-Stars, a team made up of south-east Asia internationals and selected players from the regional leagues, on their post-season tour of Kuala Lumpur. Advertisement Don't worry, though, United fans: the club are poised to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves after triggering his £62.5m release clause. Enzo Maresca said that he had no knowledge of Mykhailo Mudryk, who was provisionally suspended by the Football Association after failing a doping test last December, turning up in Wroclaw before Chelsea's Tin Pot final against Real Betis. 'To be honest, I just … I don't know, he is here or is coming?' queried the baffled Maresca. Arsenal are close to signing Martín Zubimendi, one-time Liverpool target and Spain Euro 2024 hero, to further add to Mikel Arteta's midfield options. Predictable transfer news: Ajax's Jordan Henderson is linked with an emotional return to Sunderland, where he again might team up with a Bellingham. The Black Cats hope to keep Jobe, amid much interest. Advertisement Arne Slot pulled out of the League Managers Association's annual awards dinner in London on Tuesday after the appalling incident at the end of Liverpool's Premier League victory parade. Former Rangers, Liverpool and Stoke left-half, Willie Stevenson, one-time publican of the Kings Head, Macclesfield, has died at the age 85. Stevenson's spell at Anfield included league title successes in both 1964 and 1966, the 1965 FA Cup, the first in Liverpool history. 'The thoughts of everyone at Rangers are with Willie's family and friends at this sad time', read a Rangers statement. No Mary Earps but a potential bounty of £1.7m if the Lionesses defend their Euros title this summer. Millie Bright has meanwhile confirmed her absence from the England training camp was for reasons of burnout. 'I think mentally and physically I'm at my limits, which is why I'm not at camp,' sighed the Chelsea player. Liverpool have received inquiries from Brentford, West Ham and Leeds regarding the goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher and allowed John Heitinga to open talks with Ajax about becoming their new head coach. Advertisement And Internazionale, the scamps, will wear their third strip in Saturday's Bigger Cup final in Munich, a golden yellow shirt with black details and black shorts combination that rather resembles Borussia Dortmund. STILL WANT MORE? It's the season's end but you all know what that means. Yes, the transfer window is poised to fly open, and as ever Big Website has a transfer interactive for both the women and the men, as well as a club-by-club guide of the transfers from the top five leagues in Europe. If that wasn't snazzy enough for you, have a go on our all-singing, all-dancing Premier League 2024-25 picture essay: here's Jonny Weeks' story of the season in 100 photos. Advertisement Robbie Keane is a champion, as he continues his world tour of offbeat assignments by leading Ferencvaros to a seventh consecutive league title for Hungary's footballing powerhouse. That his team held off Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban's club, Puskas Akademia, makes for a heady brew, as Tom Mortimer reports. Jacob Steinberg's Tin Pot final preview looks at how Chelsea can become the first English team to win all four European trophies – and why much of their manager's strategy is rooted in chess. Arsenal's Lisbon lioness, Stina Blackstenius, is profiled by Tom Garry, retracing her steps from Linköping to Lisbon to Arsenal hero status. 'This chapter is over. The story? Still being written. Grateful to all.' What did Cristiano Ronaldo mean by that? Will he play in the Fifa Club World Cup? John Duerden wonders what happens next for CR7. MEMORY LANE On this day in 2011, Wayne Rooney scores for Manchester United against Barcelona, becoming the sixth and last Englishman to score in a Champions League final, following Teddy Sheringham, Steve McManaman, Steven Gerrard, Sol Campbell and Frank Lampard. United would go on to lose to a Barça team Sir Alex Ferguson afterwards admitted 'are the best team we've faced', as Lionel Messi and David Villa smashed the Catalan side to victory.
