Charles Barkley blasts TNT over ESPN NBA trade in NSFW rant
The post Charles Barkley blasts TNT over ESPN NBA trade in NSFW rant appeared first on ClutchPoints. For the first time since 1989, the NBA will not be broadcast on TNT. And while that fact has been clear for some time now, Charles Barkley is still mad about it. Barkley, the star of TNT's crown jewel, 'Inside the NBA,' will still be a part of the league's national television programming. But it will not, of course, be on TNT; instead, he, Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith, and Shaquille O'Neal will occasionally appear on ESPN as part of a licensing deal in which 'Inside' will be produced by TNT's crew but broadcast on ESPN. The agreement, while helpful in partially justifying Barkley and Co.'s massive deals with Warner Bros. Discovery (TNT's parent company), remains a point of great annoyance for the former NBA star. 'TNT never came to us like grown folks and said, 'Hey guys, we're probably going to lose to NBA,' which we could have understood,' Barkley said on the 'Pardon My Take' podcast. 'But I thought they sucked. I told them they sucked. Because there's a way you treat people. Because if they had came to us and said, 'Hey, you know what? It's a lot of money.' Because, you know, we were paying 1.2 billion dollars a year and it went to 2.5 billion. That's a lot of money for 11 years. If they had said 'it's not a good deal,' we would have understood. But to let us hear about it — and I'll tell you something really s—-y about it, too: I found out that we got traded to ESPN from ESPN.' Barkley has been open in his discontent with WBD's leadership, although it has not changed much. 'Inside' is still scheduled to become a part of ESPN's NBA programming during the 2025-26 season, and TNT is still trying to come up with how to use Barkley, O'Neal, Johnson, and Smith without having the rights to the NBA. Barkley has said that they filmed an unaired pilot of sorts, which he said went disastrously and was acknowledged as such by the higher-ups in WBD. The NBA season is set to begin on Oct. 21. 'Inside' is expected to be a part of 'high-profile' games during the regular season, as well as postseason games. Charles Barkley rips TNT for lack of communication: ‘I told ‘em they sucked'
Charles Barkley genuinely enjoyed working to TNT for 25 years. But it was the network's lack of communication about 'Inside the NBA' potentially moving to ESPN that irked hm. 'I'll tell you something really (expletive) about it too: I found out that we got traded to ESPN from ESPN,' Barkley said during a recent appearance on the 'Pardon My Take' podcast. Barkley said he received a text message from Scott Van Pelt, Brian Windhorst, Elle Duncan and Bob Myers welcoming him to the ESPN family. 'I'm like, 'what family? What are you talking about?,'' he said. Barkley received a call from TNT about 90 minutes later informing him of what he already knew. 'I said, 'Well you probably could have gave us a heads up.' I said, 'you traded us to ESPN and we have to hear about it on the internet. ... That's just not the way you do business,'' Barkley noted. For months, there was speculation about TNT losing its NBA rights, but the network did, in Barkley's words, 'an awful job' keeping the employees updated on what was going on. 'One story said we lost it. The next story said we still in negotiation. Then we lost it. We're still in negotiations,' Barkley recalled. 'And TNT never came to us, like grown folks and said, 'Hey guys, we're probably going to lose the NBA,' which we could have understood.' 'I told 'em they sucked. Because there's a way you treat people,' he continued. 'Because if they had have came to us and said, 'Hey, you know what, it's a lot of money.' Because we were paying $1.2 billion a year and it went to $2.5 billion. That's a lot of money for 11 years. If they had said 'it's not a good deal,' we would've understood.' The NBA signed an 11-year media rights deal with Disney, NBC and Amazon. The deal — rumored to be worth at least $76 million —will keep games on ESPN and ABC. Barkley, Earnie Johnson, Kenny Smith and Shaquille O'Neal will remain with 'Inside the NBA' — on the air with TNT since 1989 — when it moves to ESPN beginning the 2025-26 season. Barkley originally was going to step away from television after TNT lost its media rights, but he will remain with his longtime TNT co-workers as the four-man crew shifts to ESPN. 'Inside the NBA' will handle pregame, halftime and postgame coverage of the NBA Finals on ABC, conference finals and the NBA Playoffs. During the regular season, it will be part of opening week coverage, as well as Christmas Day, all ABC games after Jan. 1, the final week of the season and other marquee events. Kristaps Porzingis expected Celtics to trade him to West team before Hawks deal
Kristaps Porzingis knew a trade from the Celtics was possible this offseason. However, the big man did not suspect a move to the Hawks. The former Celtics big man spoke to Latvia's Sports Studja in an interview this week in his first public comments after Boston traded him away as part of a three-team deal to the Atlanta Hawks for Georges Niang. 'After the season, I spoke to my agent and kind of expected that one or more of us would be traded,' Porzingis said via a translation on BasketNews. 'For a while, I thought I might end up with the Spurs, but then Atlanta came in—and that was a nice surprise. It was out of my hands.' In a bit of a twist, another one of Porzingis' ex-teammates (Luke Kornet) ended up with the Spurs instead once the Hawks landed Porzingis in the June trade. Boston cut tens of millions in salary and luxury tax penalities from their payroll next season by bringing back a much smaller salary ($8.2 million) in Niang. The power forward may end up being on the move again in the upcoming months if the team tries to reduce more salary from the payroll. Porzingis is set to make his return to the court in EuroBasket this summer for Latvia after recovering from a post-viral condition that impacted him during Boston's playoff run in May. 'In June, I fully rested and lowered the intensity. All of that has gone away,' he said. 'I haven't felt any of the playoff symptoms anymore. I feel great and ready to join the national team. Super happy.' Porzingis is projected to be a backup center for the Hawks as he enters a contract year making $30.7 million for a revamped Hawks roster. The team is expected to have Jalen Johnson back healthy and also made key upgrades on the wing with Nickel Alexander-Walker and Luke Kennard in hopes of making some noise in a wide open Eastern Conference. The former Celtics big man is optimistic about the team's chances in his new home. 'I think expectations are high. Atlanta's been on the edge of the playoffs the last few years, sometimes getting through the first round,' Porzingis said. 'It's a great situation for me to come in and contribute. Maybe even better than Boston, where it was championship or bust.' NBA legend praises Toronto as 'best city in the world'
He may hail from the deep south, but Charles Barkley has a big love for the north. Article content The NBA great shared his praise for Toronto during a recent podcast appearance, stating that the capital of Ontario ranks at the top of his favourite places. Article content Article content The native of Leeds, Ala., was speaking with Big Cat and PFT Commenter on the Pardon My Take podcast when the co-hosts asked Barkley to say hello to their mutual friend, Paul Bissonnette — a former NHLer turned analyst who hosts the Spittin' Chiclets podcast. Article content The pair joked that Bissonnette — known as 'BizNasty' — needed to tone down his support of the Toronto Maple Leafs, to which Barkley countered that he also hopes to see the boys in blue and white raise the Stanley Cup some day. Article content 'I'm rooting for (the Maple Leafs). They gotta win soon. I know they let (Mitch) Marner just go, but I gotta root for them because that's my favourite city in the world,' Barkley said. Article content 'Toronto is the best city in the world. Easily. Chicago's summer is the second-best. Those are my two favourite places in the world.' Like Bissonnette, who works at TNT alongside Barkley, the Round Mound of Rebound has showed support for the Leafs on the network. In fact, at the start of last spring's NHL playoffs, Barkley picked the Leafs to make it to the Stanley Cup Final but to lose to the Edmonton Oilers. Article content While the Oilers did reach the Final, they lost in six games to the Florida Panthers, who had bounced the Leafs in the second round. Article content This isn't the first time that Barkley has sung praise for the Six. While covering the 2019 NBA Finals between the Raptors and Golden State Warriors, Barkley said that he visits Toronto every summer. Article content 'This is one of the best cities in the world,' Barkley said at the time. 'I come up here every summer. This is one of the best-kept secrets in the world.' Article content Barkley didn't have much of an opportunity to take in Toronto during his playing days. Before he retired in 2000, the 11-time all-star only made three trips to the city to face the Raptors. Article content
