TRAI seeks views on assignment of microwave spectrum in lower 6GHz, E&V-bands

NEW DELHI: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India ( TRAI ) on Wednesday floated a consultation paper to seek stakeholders' views on the assignment of the microwave spectrum in the lower 6GHz band, 7GHz, 15GHz, 18GHz, 21GHz bands, and E & V bands. In August 2022, the Department of Telecommunications had requested the telecom regulator to provide recommendations for the assignment of spectrum in E&V bands and microwave access (MWA) and microwave backbone (MWB) spectrum in frequency bands of 6GHz/7GHz/13GHz/15GHz/18GHz/21GHz. In this regard, TRAI released a consultation paper on the assignment of spectrum in E&V Bands, and Microwave Access (MWA) and Microwave Backbone (MWB) for stakeholders' inputs on the subject. However, in the meantime, the Central government enacted the Telecommunication Act, 2023, in December 2023. Subsequently, the telecom watchdog told DoT that a review may be needed on the abovementioned topic. In response, the DoT, through a fresh reference letter in September 2024, while agreeing to the TRAI's observation that backhaul spectrum is a part of the First Schedule of the Telecommunications Act, 2023 for which the assignment method would be administrative, requested TRAI to provide recommendations under Section 11(1)(a) of the TRAI Act, 1997 on aspects such as demand assessment and scope of service or usage for V-band (57-66GHz) and E-band (81-86GHz), and the mode of assignment of spectrum and associated tersm and conditions. The DoT had also asked TRAI to provide its suggestions on spectrum charges and related terms & conditions, such as spectrum cap, carrier aggregation, etc., for the assignment of spectrum in lower 6GHz)/7GHz/13GHz/15GHz/18GHz/21GHz bands for backhaul purposes of commercial telecom services, and if there is any need to review the use of the 7GHz and 15GHz bands in view of consideration of these bands for Access using International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) after World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC) - 2027. To this extent, stakeholders can submit their views on the consultation paper by June 25, and counter-comments by July 9.

TRAI launches consultation paper on assignment of more microwave spectrum

New Delhi: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Wednesday released a consultation paper on the assignment of the microwave spectrum in 6 GHz (lower), 7 GHz, 13 GHz, 15 GHz, 18 GHz, 21 GHz Bands, E-Band and V-Band. TRAI has now invited written comments from stakeholders on the consultation paper, which has been placed on the regulator's website ( by June 25 and counter-comments by July 9. The consultation paper has been issued in response to the request from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to provide recommendations under the TRAI Act, 1997, on issues such as the demand assessment and scope of service/ usage for spectrum in these bands, and the methodology of assignment of spectrum and associated terms and conditions, in line with the determination of scope of services/ usages by TRAI, i.e., "Access" or "Backhaul" or "Integrated Access & Backhaul," the official statement said. Spectrum charges and related terms and conditions, such as spectrum cap, carrier aggregation for assignment of spectrum in these bands for backhaul purposes of commercial telecom services, are another issue that has been covered in the consultation paper. DoT also sought TRAI recommendations on the quantum of spectrum to be earmarked for last-mile connectivity (Fixed Wireless Access) of commercial telecom services and methodology of assignment of spectrum and associated terms & conditions in non-IMT bands. The quantum of spectrum to be earmarked for backhaul purposes for non-commercial or captive use and associated terms and conditions, including charges, have also been included in the consultation paper. Besides, DOT had sought recommendations on the feasibility and technical parameters for allowing low-power, indoor, consumer device-to-consumer device usage on a licence-exempt basis in V-band. According to the official statement, the comments and counter-comments may be sent, preferably in electronic form, to [email protected]. Zee Entertainment share price jumps as Arbitral Tribunal rejects Aditya Birla Finance's ₹134 crore claim

Zee Entertainment Enterprises (ZEEL) on Tuesday said the Arbitral Tribunal has rejected all claims filed by Aditya Birla Finance Ltd (ABFL) in a ₹ 134 crore dispute linked to a loan extended to Siti Networks Ltd, sending the company's stock higher. Zee share price rallied after the relief from the Arbitral Tribunal, gaining as much as 4.39% to ₹ 122.30 apiece on the BSE. Aditya Birla Finance had initiated arbitration proceedings against Zee Entertainment Enterprises, seeking enforcement of a Letter of Comfort (LOC) allegedly issued by the company in connection with a ₹ 134 crore term loan granted to Siti Networks. The finance firm had claimed that the LOC effectively served as a corporate guarantee and demanded that Zee be held liable for the repayment. In its plea, ABFL had sought multiple reliefs, including a declaration that the LOC constituted a guarantee and directions for Zee to pay the outstanding loan with interest — totaling ₹ 174.57 crore. Additionally, it sought a refund of ₹ 108 crore that Siti had paid to Zee in FY 2020–21. However, Zee contested the claim, asserting that the LOC did not amount to a financial guarantee. The company maintained that the ₹ 108 crore was part of a legitimate business transaction—consideration for signals and channels provided to Siti as per Interconnection Agreements governed by the TRAI Act. Zee further countered with a ₹ 15 crore claim, citing that the amount was deposited by Siti in fixed deposits on Zee's behalf but had been appropriated by ABFL. In its final award dated May 12, 2024, the Arbitral Tribunal dismissed all claims made by ABFL. However, it did not make a final ruling on Zee's counterclaim, instead leaving the matter open and allowing both parties to pursue further remedies before the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT). At 1:45 PM, ZEE share price was trading 4.01% higher at ₹ 121.85 apiece on the BSE.
