Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Bernard Parker reflects on successful first season in coaching

Kaizer Chiefs' Wandile Duba and TS Galaxy's Mlungisi Mbunjana fight for the ball during their Betway Premiership match. Image: Backpagepix Former Kaizer Chiefs forward Bernard Parker has expressed his satisfaction with TS Galaxy's overall performance during the 2024/25 season, which marked his debut campaign as an assistant coach at senior level and as head coach of the club's DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) team. As he transitions from a celebrated playing career into coaching, Parker says he's proud of the strides his teams have made, even amidst early difficulties. Speaking about the season, the 39-year-old admitted that adapting to professional coaching was initially challenging, despite having prior experience at lower levels. 'It was quite tough for me at first to put the team together because, although I had done coaching at a grassroots level, this was my first official season in professional coaching,' he explained. Parker holds a unique dual role with the Rockets, acting as a vital link between the club's DDC side and the senior team. A growing number of Premier Soccer League (PSL) clubs are turning to their development ranks to promote emerging talent from within their youth systems. Video Player is loading. He becomes the latest young prospect to make the switch from Amakhosi to the Rockets, following the path taken by Puso Dithejane and Khulimane Ndamane before him. Earlier in the campaign, Galaxy had found themselves in a difficult position following the departure of head coach Sead Ramovic after a string of unsatisfactory results. However, the club regained its footing under the joint leadership of Parker and Bosnian tactician Adnan Beganovic. The duo successfully steered the Rockets into a top-eight finish, narrowly missing out on CAF Confederations qualification. Reflecting on the season's beginning, Parker attributed the team's slow start to the loss of key players, which disrupted their rhythm and made it difficult to build momentum. 'It was a bit of a challenge to maintain balance after we lost some important players early in the season,' Parker said. 'We had to find replacements who could match the quality we had before, in order to carry forward from where we left off last season.'

Kaizer Chiefs open to selling African star

Kaizer Chiefs are expected to find and introduce at least one new goalkeeper before the start of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season. It's been nine months since the Rwandan international goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari joined Amakhosi from TS Galaxy. Despite a promising start at the beginning of last Spring, Ntwari has been out of the Kaizer Chiefs team since October 2024. According to Soccer Laduma, the club is considering cashing in on a sale that involves Ntwari. 'The club still respects Ntwari, but they are realistic about his situation,' an insider at Naturena told the outlet. Fiacre Ntwari warms up at the Toyota Stadium with Kaizer Chiefs before facing Marumo Gallants in the Cufa Cup. Image: @lorenzKO/X 'If a good offer comes and it makes sense for everyone involved, Kaizer Chiefs will consider letting him go, especially with the squad changes expected under the new technical direction,' the source added. In the meantime, the club's existing options are Brandon Petersen, Bruce Bvuma and Bontle Molefe. Refiloe Jane grateful for Banyana return after tough time on sidelines

Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Refiloe Jane is filled with gratitude after she finally returned to the pitch following a daunting time in the medical room due to a long-term injury. Jane signed for Hollywoodbets Super League side TS Galaxy during the start of the season, ending any speculation about her career going forward. The future of the Banyana Banyana captain had been a major talking point after she left Serie A side Sassuolo in June last year amid her injury woes. It was at the Fifa Women's World Cup in Australasia in which Jane got injured, which saw her missing out on the team's maiden last-16 clash against The Netherlands. The 32-year-old's journey back to full fitness was not easy. As such, she's grateful to everyone that played a huge supportive role in her recovery. 'It was a really tough period. It wasn't easy – a lot of things happened behind the scenes,' Jane explained. 'But I am grateful to all the doctors, and physios. I am also grateful to my families, and the trainers who also tried to help me as well. 'A lot of us things happened in making sure that I stayed motivated. I would like to say thank you to TS Galaxy for making sure that I had recovered whatever I had lost.' Video Player is loading. 'It's a lot of things that I needed to consider before choosing the team that I was going to play for,' Jane explained. 'While I was still overseas, I was in contact with a lot of owners. When I came back, I trained with TS Galaxy before I fully returned to competitive football. 'The environment inspired me to what made me link with the team – how they were gelling together – and the players were welcoming and loving. 'That environment was really critical for me in coming back. I had to find a place where I would be happy first, and not be put under so much pressure.' Joining Galaxy helped Jane to easily transition back into competitive football, and she has also earned a call-up back to the Banyana team. Jane is part of the South African squad that will face Botswana and Zambia in the one-day Three Nations tournament set to be hosted at Lucas Masterpieces Stadium in Atteridgeville on Wednesday. A lot has changed since Jane was in the Banyana fold, with coach Desiree Ellis integrating some new blood into the team. Jane has opened up on their senior players' new role. 'We are trying to help the youngsters and make sure that they move forward as individuals and as a team,' Jane revealed. 'We try to give them guidelines and tools to succeed, both locally, continentally and internationally.' Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis is happy with the return of senior players who were ruled out of international football to injuries, including captain Refiloe Jane and star defender Bambanani Mbane. 📹 #SABCSport's @flexmpumi #SABCSportFootball — SABC Sport (@SABC_Sport) May 26, 2025 The Three Nations tournament is set to prepare Banyana for their Wafcon title defence, which is set to take place in Morocco between July 5 and July 26. 'Over the years, there've been challenges when it comes to preparing for major tournaments, but thanks to Sasol and Safa, things have changed,' Jane said. 'In every Fifa window, we try to get to play in tournaments and things like that. 'That gives the team enough time to gel together, and the coaches time to work with the players.'

Gabriel praises young Richards Bay side as Top 8 dream hangs in the balance

Lindokuhle Zikhali is swamped by his Richards Bay teamates after scoring the winning goal against TS Galaxy at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville. Photo: BackpagePix Richards Bay head coach Ronnie Gabriel has credited the growth and maturity of his youthful squad for propelling the club to the brink of MTN8 qualification, following a spirited 2–0 victory over SuperSport United at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday. The win — sealed by second-half goals from Yanela Mbuthuma and Thulani Gumede — elevated the Natal Rich Boyz into eighth place on the Betway Premiership table heading into the final round of fixtures. However, their place in next season's MTN8 is not yet guaranteed. Richards Bay currently sit on 33 points with a goal difference of -7, and their fate now hinges on Golden Arrows' final result. Should Abafana Bes'thende win their last match by a margin of more than six goals, they would overtake Gabriel's side and snatch the last MTN8 spot. Despite the uncertainty, Sunday's result capped off a campaign that, for much of the season, saw Richards Bay embroiled in a relegation battle.
