Govindaraja Swamy Brahmotsavams begin with ‘hoisting of sacred flag'
The annual Brahmotsavams at the TTD-run Sri Govindaraja Swamy temple got off to a traditional start with the 'Dhwajarohanam' ceremony on Monday. The ritual Dhwajarohanam, hoisting of the sacred flag atop the temple flag post, signals the commencement of the nine-day festival that involves procession of the deities on the streets encircling the temple precincts. After performing special puja to the flag bearing the imprint of 'Garuda', the favourite celestial carrier of Lord Mahavishnu, priests carried the same in a procession around the temple. During the auspicious 'Mithuna Lagnam' between 7.02 am and 7.20am, the priests hoisted the flag atop the flag post as per the tenets of Vaikhanasa Agama, amid chanting of Vedic hymns and to the beats of traditional drums. The deities were given a celestial bath with aromatic substances during the 'Snapana Tirumanjanam' ritual performed in the afternoon. In the evening, the processional deity of Lord Govindaraja was taken on 'Pedda Sesha Vahanam', a huge carrier representing a seven-hooded serpent, on the four streets around the temple. The serpent represents 'Adi Sesha', which serves as the bed and canopy for Lord Vishnu and is hence considered the first among his divine followers. The Tirumala-Tirupati Pedda Jeeyangar and Chinna Jeeyangar, Deputy Executive Officer V.R. Shanti and Assistant Executive Officer Munikrishna Reddy took part in the events.

NDA leaders see ‘conspiracy' to unseat alliance government in Andhra Pradesh
Several leaders of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government and members of the TTD Trust Board have questioned the series of unsavoury incidents in the recent past, and suspect them to be the handiwork of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) in a bid to unseat the alliance government. The apparent trigger was the incident on Friday night, when a devotee in the Sarvadarshan queue line in Tirumala raised slogans against the TTD for 'neglecting the interests of the pilgrims' and causing them hardship during their Tirumala visit. He said the TTD officials had failed to provide them food and kept them waiting outside the queue lines for several hours. The video of the incident was shot and made viral on social media platforms, causing embarrassment to the TTD as well as the State government. However, when the TTD reached out to the devotee and tried to offer him solace, rather surprisingly, he retracted from the allegation and gave an 'all is well' statement. Growing suspicious about the intent, the TTD management issued a stern warning to the public not to make baseless allegations against the institution, as it would affect the sentiments of Hindu devotees across the world. Board member and BJP State spokesperson G. Bhanuprakash Reddy submitted a letter to the Director-General of Police, complaining about the 'conspiracies' of the YSRCP leaders to unseat the NDA Government. He charged the leaders of unleashing a false propaganda, supported by deliberate misleading comments on its allied media, to create confusion among the public. Mr. Reddy pointed to the instances of alleged cow deaths at the TTD-run dairy farm, SV Gosamrakshanasala, and the stray incident involving a Muslim cab driver performing 'namaz' in Tirumala, which were deliberately used to show the TTD administration and the NDA government in poor light. He sought a thorough probe and harsh punishment of the guilty for playing with the sentiments of devotees. Lokesh responds In his post on X, Minister for HRD N. Lokesh responded on the 'negative campaign' by the opposition party. He said the person raising slogans against the TTD was identified as YSRCP activist Baddili Atcha Rao of Kakinada rural, and expressed regret over the miscreants in the opposition party choosing Tirumala for their 'malicious campaign' against the government.

‘Chapparam' marks final day of Gangamma Jatara
For the last nine days, Tirupati has been reverberating with the devotional fervour of the 'Gangamma Jatara'. While the religious fervour in TTD-run temples is marked by the chanting of hymns from Vedic scriptures and Tamil chants from 'Nalayira Divyaprabandham', the fervour in this folk festival is a visual feast in nature, where the religious practices are based on folklore passed on from generations. Gangamma is revered locally as the younger sister of Lord Venkateswara, and the practices during the nine days are religiously followed by the natives of Tirupati. From wearing different costumes to smearing colours all over the body, the practices are followed with great zeal. Women follow the main ritual of carrying fire in a pot with thousand holes, which is carefully carried on the head and taken to the temple. After offering prayers at the shrine, the pot is smashed to the ground and broken into pieces. The last day of the festival, on Tuesday, the devout carried the 'Chapparam', a piece of art work resembling a 'Gopuram'. The Chapparam is carried by devotees all the way from their home to the temple. With shoulder as a support, the tower-like structure is tied tightly from the waist and carried. The practice marks the end of the period of abstinence observed by the devout. Devotees also arrived at the temple by donning the guise of mythological characters like Venkateswara, Rama, Krishna, Kali, Arusa and others. Of late, several youth donned saris and came to the temple in typical Pushpa style.
