Water supply hit in Coimbatore as Pillur Dam shutters open amid overflow

COIMBATORE: Water supply to several residential areas in Coimbatore was disrupted on Saturday as officials were forced to halt drawing water from the Pillur Dam after it reached its full storage capacity of 100 feet on Friday night. The opening of the dam's shutters, a standard protocol to manage excess water, affected operations under the Pillur Scheme 3, a major drinking water project for the city. Executed jointly by the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board and the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC), the Pillur Scheme 3 project aims to supply 178.30 million litres per day (MLD) of water to the expanded areas of the city. The Rs 780-crore scheme draws water from the Bhavani Barrage-1, located downstream of the Pillur Dam near Mettupalayam, and includes an extensive infrastructure network of wells, tunnels, pipelines, treatment plants, and overhead tanks. However, during the monsoon season, when the dam's level reaches the 100-foot mark, the shutters are opened to release surplus water to prevent flooding. When over 10,000 cusecs of water is released, all eight shutters of the Bhavani Barrage-1 are also opened, making it impossible for officials to draw water for city supply.

Expedite ongoing civic works, relay road dug up before NE monsoon: Minister

The ongoing projects to provide water supply, sewer infrastructure and stormwater drains in various municipal corporations and local bodies across the State must be expedited. Roads dug up for these works must be relaid before the onset of the Northeast monsoon, Municipal Administration Minister said here on Friday. Mr. Nehru chaired a meeting to review the projects being executed by local bodies and Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board. He instructed officials to desilt canals, water bodies and stormwater drains in urban and rural habitations ahead of the NE monsoon. Besides monitoring the existing combined water supply schemes and water sources, various government agencies must work in close coordination to prevent damage to water and sewer networks during the execution of infrastructure projects. Measures must be complete the schemes announced in the Tamil Nadu Assembly in the past four years, he said. TWAD supplies nearly 2,071 million litres a day of water to 544 combined water supply schemes across the State. Senior officials from various government agencies, including TWAD, Chennai Metrowater and Commissionerate of Municipal Administration took part in the meeting, said a press release.

Siruvani water supply hit in Coimbatore after pipeline damage, ongoing repairs underway

COIMBATORE: Drinking water supply from the Siruvani Dam to the residential areas of the Coimbatore district has been severely affected following back-to-back pipeline works that are being carried out by the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board and the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) over the past week. The disruption began earlier last week when the civic body began to carry out critical interlinking works, reducing the supply from 100 million litres per day (MLD) to 50 MLD. These works aim to connect the Siruvani pipeline with the Pillur Scheme-3 to improve water management during periods of low dam storage. Just as the works neared completion, a fresh setback occurred last Friday. A major Siruvani pipeline was accidentally damaged during road-widening work by the State Highways Department near Kalampalayam on the Siruvani Main Road. The mishap led to the loss of thousands of litres of treated drinking water and disrupted supply to areas like Kurichi and Kuniyamuthur. The TWAD Board is now working on emergency repairs. Officials said full restoration of the supply is expected soon after the remaining joint-packing and repair works are completed. As of Sunday, the water level in the dam stood at 40.34 feet, well below its full capacity of 49.53 ft. Only 66.32 MLD is currently being drawn, against the agreed supply of 101.4 MLD.

Cauvery water crosses Mukkombu, headed to Kallanai

Trichy: Farmers ceremonially welcomed Cauvery water as it reached Mukkombu barrage in Trichy on Saturday after being released from Mettur dam by chief minister M K Stalin on June 12. He will open the Kallanai barrage in Thanjavur on Sunday. The water, released from the Stanley reservoir in Mettur, travelled through Mayanur barrage in Karur district and reached Trichy district on Saturday morning. Farmers and their association representatives offered flowers to welcome the water at Mukkombu barrage (Upper Anicut) with flowers. Thereafter, the water resources department released the waters towards Grand Anicut (Kallanai). Cauvery water recharges groundwater resources of Trichy district. About 6,200 hectare of kuruvai and 54,000 hectare of samba crops are dependent on the water as well as groundwater-based irrigation. Groundwater recharge boosts drinking water supply of TWAD and the local bodies. Currently, Mettur dam has water at a height of 114.9 feet and a capacity of 85.5 tmcft. The dam receives an inflow of 7,507 cusecs and has an outflow of 6,836 cusecs of Cauvery water. After being released by the chief minister at Kallanai barrage on Sunday evening, the water proceeds towards the delta districts through the course of Cauvery, Vennar and Grand Anicut Channel. PMK president Anbumani urges Stalin to order probe into ‘wage scam' in drainage board

TIRUNELVELI: PMK president Dr Anbumani Ramadoss on Friday urged CM MK Stalin to order an inquiry into the allegation of Rs 90 cr loot committed every year by officials and contractors of Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD ) Board who pay only 40% to 50% wages to workers. The TNIE carried a detailed report about the issue on Friday. In a post on his 'X' handle, Anbumani said it was condemnable that no action has been taken against those responsible for the scam, which has been going on for over 20 years. 'There is no greater crime or sin in the world than embezzling wages meant for contract workers. The Tamil Nadu government must order a fair inquiry into this scam. Those behind it must be identified,' he demanded. The PMK leader said, 'A total of 11,597 workers, including electricians, pumping operators, and maintenance assistants, are employed on a contract basis in the TWAD Board. Their wages are paid to the contractors, who then disburse it to the workers. The accusation is that contractors, who receive a minimum wage of Rs 15,401 or more per worker, pay only Rs 7,500 to Rs 9,800 and embezzle the remaining amount.'
