Govt to address low media salaries, says Fahmi

KOTA KINABALU (July 24): The government will look into the issue of low salaries among media practitioners in the country, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. Fahmi said he plans to engage with media clubs across Malaysia to gain deeper insight into the situation before initiating discussions in the near future. 'We want to understand the conditions in every state,' he said. 'We will also look into aspects concerning both full-time workers and stringers. Let me collect the information first.' He was responding to a reporter's question after presenting a contribution from the Tabung Kasih @ Hawana fund to a local media practitioner in Penampang today. On a related note, Fahmi said there are plans to increase the fund's allocation to ensure continued support for media practitioners facing hardship. 'However, since the previous allocation is not yet fully utilised, we will prioritise disbursing those funds first,' he added. 'I have asked Bernama to explore a mechanism to raise more funds to assist more media colleagues in the future.' During the visit, the minister met with fund recipient Vicky Sylvester Matanjang, 52, a photographer at the Sabah Information Department (JaPen), who was severely injured in a road accident in March last year. Vicky, who sustained six broken ribs and a fractured left arm after being hit by a four-wheel-drive vehicle, expressed his gratitude for the aid. He recently returned to work but still requires physiotherapy. So far, a total of 463 media practitioners nationwide have benefited from the Tabung Kasih @ Hawana fund. Also present during the visit was Bernama Chief Executive Officer Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin.

One of the recipients, Sabah State Information Department photographer Vicky Sylvester Matanjang, 52, said he was moved by the kind gesture of Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, who personally visited his home in Kampung Hungab here today to deliver the contribution. 'I feel appreciated, even though I'm just a photographer. Today is my first day back at work, but I'm only doing light duties as I haven't fully recovered,' said Vicky, who sustained serious injuries in a road accident in March. He said the initiative also reflected the Madani government's concern for the welfare of those facing hardship, especially media practitioners nationwide. Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa; Bernama chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin; Sabah State Information Department director Jainisah Mohd Noor; and Sabah Journalists Association (SJA) president Mariah Doksil. Sabah Media journalist Hafizul Andie Zulkarnain, 35, who is still recovering from surgery for a bowel complication and ruptured appendix in June, expressed his heartfelt thanks after receiving the contribution from Nur-ul Afida at his residence in Sepanggar, Kota Kinabalu, last Tuesday. 'Thank you for taking the time to visit and hand over the contribution. It will definitely help with my treatment expenses during my recovery,' he said. Meanwhile, Nur-ul Afida said media associations in Sabah could reach out to the secretariat of Tabung Kasih@Hawana, managed by Bernama, to provide information on media practitioners facing health issues or hardships. 'I would like to seek the cooperation of media associations in Sabah to share information with us so that we can assist our fellow media practitioners in need,' she said. Meanwhile, Mariah expressed hope that the SJA could serve as a key platform for coordinating aid to media practitioners in need. 'We will suggest the names of those eligible to receive donations and assist in providing the necessary information,' she said. The Tabung Kasih@Hawana initiative reflects the spirit of Malaysia Madani by upholding values of compassion and care, particularly for media practitioners who have long contributed to society but are now facing life or health challenges. The fund was established as a Communications Ministry initiative and implemented through Bernama to support serving and retired journalists and other media practitioners who are facing hardships or financial difficulties. To date, a total of 463 media practitioners nationwide have benefited from the initiative. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Mainstream media still trusted for accurate, in-depth reports, says Alice Lau

Lau (seated fifth left) is seen with SJA members and guests at the event. SIBU (June 10): Social media may be the common mode used to share news but mainstream media such as newspapers and television stations are still trusted for providing accurate and in-depth reports, said Alice Lau. The Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker said journalists are trained to seek the truth, verify facts, as well as present fair and balanced reports to the public. 'They are not just sharing messages but are truth-seekers and truth-tellers, helping our society make sense of complex issues,' she said at the Sibu Journalists Association (SJA) installation and Gawai celebration last night. The Lanang MP said in today's digital era, social media and online platforms have enabled information to travel faster than ever. While this is convenient, she pointed out there are also challenges as misinformation and fake news can spread rapidly, especially through unverified sources. 'Nowadays, anyone can post content, information, or news on platforms like Facebook, WeChat, TikTok, or Instagram. But that doesn't make everyone a journalist. As more people turn to social media and 'self-media', journalists also need to keep up. 'This doesn't mean just blindly following the latest trends, but rather strengthening their professional skills, using new tools wisely, and staying true to their mission,' she said. Lau pointed out that while most people can cook, not everyone can become a master chef. She also shared that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had announced an additional RM1 million this year for the Tabung Kasih @ Hawana. The fund, set up in April 2023, helps media professionals facing health challenges or in urgent need of support. 'This shows that the Madani government truly appreciates the hard work and contributions of journalists in our country,' added Lau. To date, 405 media members have received aid from Tabung Kasih @ Hawana. Among those attending the SJA event were Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh; Sibu MP Oscar Ling; Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng; Joshua Ting – a political secretary to the Premier, who represented Dudong assemblyman Dato Sri Tiong King Sing; and SJA chairperson Florence Nervyn. Fahmi: Hawana aid has helped 405 media practitioners

PUTRAJAYA: A total of 405 media practitioners have benefited from a special fund launched in conjunction with National Journalists' Day (Hawana) in 2023. Communication Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil (pic), who disclosed this, said more media practitioners will receive aid with the Hawana 2025 celebration scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday. He said media practitioners who previously received assistance will also get aid. 'If there is anyone we need to reach out to and provide additional assistance for, I will ask that this matter be looked into,' he told reporters after presenting the Tabung Kasih@Hawana contribution to New Straits Times photo editor Ikhwan Munir, 50, who is undergoing treatment for colorectal cancer at Putrajaya Hospital yesterday, Bernama reported. Also present were Bernama chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and Media Prima Group managing editor Jasbant Singh. The fund, an initiative of the Communications Ministry, is managed by Bernama. Fahmi said the national news agency would continue to monitor the needs of Ikhwan, who has two children aged seven and 23. 'Ikhwan has been battling health issues over the past few weeks, so his wife is unable to work. Bernama will continue to monitor to see if we need to provide further help to him,' he added. The minister said he also took the opportunity during his visit to seek feedback from the hospital management on telecommunication coverage and Internet access at the health facility. 'They are satisfied, though they did say there is a minor issue with one of the telcos at the new wing. I have asked this telco to help optimise their services,' said Fahmi.
